Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Behind My Wife's Smile

I sat in my study for almost an hour after Rebecca's question.

Had Vanessa ever told me she was the reason Sarah died?

No.

But she had made comments.

Little comments.

At first, they seemed harmless.

She once told me Sarah had been "unnecessarily dramatic" about people who disagreed with her.

Another time, she said Sarah had "burned bridges everywhere she went.""

I had never questioned those remarks.

I assumed Vanessa was describing an old workplace disagreement.

Now I wondered what she was hiding.

I called Rebecca back.

"Please tell me what happened.""

She sighed.

"Daniel, I want to be careful. I don't want to repeat something I can't substantiate. But I worked with both women, and I remember the situation clearly.""

"Was Vanessa dangerous?""

"She was investigated for misconduct.""

"What kind?""

"She was supervising a youth internship program connected to our company. One of the teenagers complained that Vanessa had been humiliating her, withholding meals during long work sessions, and making her perform personal errands.""

I closed my eyes.

"Withholding meals?""

"Yes.""

I gripped the edge of my desk.

"Did Sarah report her?""

"Sarah was the first person who took the complaint seriously. She documented what the teenager told her and brought it to management.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa was removed from the program. She claimed Sarah had fabricated everything because they were competing for a promotion.""

"Was the complaint proven?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"Management confirmed several violations. Vanessa eventually resigned before the investigation was completed.""

I leaned back.

The room seemed to grow colder.

"Did Sarah ever mention Vanessa again?""

"Yes. Several times.""

"What did she say?""

Rebecca paused.

"She said Vanessa had a habit of making people feel indebted to her. She was charming at first. Then she would slowly isolate them, make them doubt themselves, and turn other people against whoever challenged her.""

I thought about Emily.

Her silence.

Her fear.

The way she looked at Vanessa before answering even the simplest question.

"Rebecca, did Sarah know Vanessa was planning to marry me?""

"I don't know how much she knew. But after Sarah became ill, she contacted me and asked whether I still had the old investigation records.""

"Why?""

"She said Vanessa had started contacting people from her past.""

I stared at the wall.

"What did you tell her?""

"That I didn't have access to the company records anymore. But I offered to help her find someone who did.""

"Did she ever explain why she was worried?""

Rebecca lowered her voice.

"She told me she had received a message from Vanessa saying she wanted to be part of Emily's life.""

My stomach tightened.

"Vanessa contacted Sarah before we married?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"About six months before Sarah died.""

I looked at the date on the letter.

The timing matched.

"Did Sarah tell you what Vanessa wanted?""

Rebecca hesitated.

"She said Vanessa had offered to help arrange a guardianship plan for Emily.""

I stood up.

"A guardianship plan?""

"Yes. Sarah was worried about her health. She wanted to make sure Emily would be protected if anything happened to her.""

I walked toward the window.

"But I was Emily's father. Why would there be a guardianship plan?""

"That's what Sarah wondered too. She said Vanessa was unusually interested in the financial arrangements surrounding Emily's future.""

My hands began to shake.

"Financial arrangements?""

"Sarah had an education trust for Emily. I don't know the details, but I remember her mentioning it.""

I stopped moving.

Emily's education trust.

Sarah and I had established it shortly before her death.

It contained money from her life insurance and investments.

I had managed it for Emily ever since.

Vanessa had never asked about it.

At least, not directly.

"Rebecca, do you remember anything else?""

"One thing.""

"What?""

"Sarah said Vanessa had asked her whether Emily's inheritance could be placed under the control of a guardian if Sarah died.""

I stared at the window.

The pieces were beginning to form a picture I didn't want to see.

"Did Sarah agree?""

"No. She told me she trusted you to handle everything.""

I thanked Rebecca and ended the call.

Then I opened my computer and logged into Emily's education trust.

The account was intact.

But I noticed a recent request for information.

Someone had contacted the financial institution asking about changing the designated administrator.

The inquiry had been made three weeks earlier.

I clicked the details.

The request had been submitted by Vanessa.

I sat motionless.

Three weeks earlier.

The same period Emily had written about in her notebook.

I called the bank.

After several verification questions, a representative confirmed that Vanessa had requested information about becoming a co-administrator of the trust.

The request had been denied because she wasn't authorized.

I asked whether anyone had tried again.

The representative paused.

"Actually, sir, there was another inquiry yesterday.""

"From whom?""

"Your wife.""

I closed my eyes.

"Thank you. Please place a note on the account that no changes are authorized without my written consent.""

"Certainly, Mr. Carter.""

After the call, I photographed the account activity and saved the records.

Then I called my attorney, Michael Harris.

Michael had handled my property documents and business contracts for years.

When I explained what had happened, he became very quiet.

"Daniel, I need you to come into my office tomorrow.""

"Is it that serious?""

"Potentially.""

"Why?""

"Because if your wife has been trying to access your daughter's trust without authorization, we need to understand exactly what she has done.""

I told him about the messages, photographs, and school application.

He asked me to preserve everything.

"Don't delete anything. Don't threaten her. Don't confront her about the financial records until we've reviewed them.""

"What about Emily?""

"Keep her somewhere safe and comfortable. If there is any concern about her welfare, speak with the appropriate child-protection professionals. Don't try to handle this alone.""

I agreed.

Then Michael asked one question.

"Daniel, does Vanessa have access to your business accounts?""

My stomach tightened.

"She has access to the household account. Not the company accounts.""

"Check anyway.""

After we hung up, I opened the financial dashboard for Carter Construction.

I had built the company from a small contracting business into a successful regional operation.

Vanessa had never been involved in its management.

But when I checked the list of authorized users, I noticed something.

A secondary access request had been submitted two months earlier.

The name was Vanessa Reed Carter.

I stared at the screen.

The request was pending.

I immediately canceled it.

Then I checked the household account.

The transfers to Vanessa's personal account were still there.

I began calculating the total.

By the time I finished, my stomach had turned.

More than thirty thousand dollars had been transferred over eight months.

Some of it had gone toward clothes, beauty treatments, and travel.

Some had gone toward private school expenses for Madison and Chloe.

There was nothing inherently wrong with spending money on her daughters.

But the account was supposed to support the entire household.

And Emily's school expenses had been reduced during the same period.

I found an email from the school.

The subject line read:

*Outstanding Lunch Account Balance.*

I opened it.

Emily's cafeteria account had been running low for weeks.

The school had sent three reminders.

I had never seen them.

They had gone to an email address Vanessa had listed as the primary household contact.

She had never forwarded them.

I felt physically sick.

My daughter had been standing in the dining room eating plain rice while money intended for her care was being redirected elsewhere.

I called the school.

The office administrator confirmed that Emily's lunch account had been suspended twice because of insufficient funds.

"Mr. Carter, we assumed you knew," she said apologetically.

"Why would you assume that?""

"Mrs. Carter told us there had been a family budgeting issue. She asked us to send all billing notices directly to her.""

I closed my eyes.

"Has Emily been denied meals at school?""

There was a pause.

"We would never intentionally deny a child food. But she sometimes brought lunch from home.""

I remembered the empty lunchbox in her bedroom.

"Thank you. Please make sure she has access to meals from now on. I'll take care of the account personally.""

After the call, I sat at my desk for a long time.

Then my phone rang.

It was Laura.

"Daniel, there's something happening here.""

My heart jumped.

"What's wrong?""

"Vanessa just called Emily.""

"What?""

"She said she wanted to apologize.""

I stood up.

"Put Emily on the phone.""

A moment later, I heard my daughter's voice.

"Dad?""

"Sweetheart, are you okay?""

"Yes.""

"Did Vanessa call you?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

Emily hesitated.

"She said she misses me.""

I closed my eyes.

"What else?""

"She said you were angry because of a misunderstanding. She said if I tell everyone the truth, you might lose your job.""

My blood ran cold.

"What truth?""

Emily's voice became smaller.

"She said I shouldn't tell anyone about the money.""

I gripped the phone.

"What money, sweetheart?""

"I don't know.""

Laura came back on the line.

"Daniel, I think Vanessa is trying to frighten her.""

"Don't let her speak to Emily again. Please.""

"I won't.""

I ended the call.

Then I looked at my laptop.

The financial records were open.

The trust account.

The unauthorized access requests.

The missing school payments.

I had thought the problem was cruelty.

Now I was beginning to suspect something more deliberate.

At six that evening, Michael called.

"Daniel, I found something.""

"What?""

"Your wife submitted a preliminary application to a private school, but that's not the only document.""

I sat down.

"What else?""

"There's a request for an educational guardianship consultation.""

"With whom?""

"A private family services agency.""

I stared at the screen.

"Why?""

"According to the intake notes, Vanessa described herself as Emily's primary caregiver and stated that you were frequently absent due to work.""

I felt my blood pressure rise.

"That's not true.""

"I know. But there's another issue.""

"What?""

"The application includes a statement claiming Emily has behavioral and emotional difficulties that make her unsuitable for the current household.""

I couldn't speak.

Michael continued.

"Daniel, she appears to be building a paper trail.""

I looked toward the hallway.

I remembered Emily asking whether she would get in trouble for eating.

I remembered the notebook.

The photographs.

The messages.

And now this.

Vanessa had been creating a story in which my daughter was the problem.

A child who needed to be removed.

A child whose father was too busy to care.

"Can she legally send Emily away?""

"Not without proper authority. But I want to review the documents and make sure there are no other filings.""

I thanked him.

Then I called Laura.

Emily was eating pizza at her kitchen table.

Laura sent me a photograph.

My daughter was smiling.

There was sauce on her cheek.

She looked like a normal twelve-year-old.

I saved the picture.

Then another message arrived.

From an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a document.

I opened it.

It was a printed email chain between Vanessa and someone named Richard.

The first message read:

*Vanessa: I need the guardianship process completed before Daniel discovers what happened to Sarah's trust.*

The reply was short.

*Richard: You said the trust was already accessible.*

Vanessa responded:

*Vanessa: It isn't. Sarah made sure of that. But I know where the original documents are.*

My hands went cold.

Then another message appeared.

*Richard: What about the girl?*

Vanessa's reply contained six words.

She must be removed before Monday.

I stared at the screen.

The message had been sent the previous week.

I immediately forwarded the photograph to Michael.

Then I called the unknown number.

A woman answered.

"Daniel Carter?""

"Who is this?""

"My name is Rebecca.""

"Rebecca Collins?""

"No. Rebecca Miller. I used to work with Vanessa.""

I stood up.

"Where did you get that email?""

"I'll explain. But you need to listen carefully.""

"Who is Richard?""

She paused.

Then she said something that made the room spin.

"Richard is Vanessa's first husband.""

I remembered the name.

Vanessa had told me her first marriage ended because Richard was irresponsible and controlling.

But Rebecca's next words changed everything.

"He isn't supposed to be anywhere near your family, Daniel. There was a court order after what happened to their daughter.""

I gripped the phone.

"What happened to their daughter?""

May you like

Rebecca's voice trembled.

"Vanessa lost custody because of neglect.""
