Chapter 8: The Driver Who Knew Everything

"Nobody move!""

Thomas Hale's voice carried through the hallway.

The officers raised their weapons, but Thomas pressed the gun against the doorframe and took a step toward the room.

My mother began shaking.

Richard moved instinctively in front of me.

"Thomas," he said.

"Put the gun down.""

The old driver laughed without humor.

"After all these years, that's what you have to say to me?""

"You don't have to do this.""

"I've spent seventeen years doing exactly what your father ordered. You think I'm going to stop now because you've suddenly discovered a conscience?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"My father is dead.""

"His money isn't.""

Thomas lifted his left hand, displaying the silver watch.

"Neither are his secrets.""

The officers spread out along the hallway.

Detective Mitchell appeared behind them.

"Thomas Hale, put the weapon down and step away from the hostage.""

Thomas looked at her.

"You're too late, Detective.""

Then he turned toward me.

"And you must be Amara.""

I couldn't speak.

He studied my face with unsettling familiarity.

"You look like Elena.""

"How do you know my mother?""

His expression softened for a fraction of a second.

"Because I was there when she begged your grandfather to let her go.""

My mother made a strangled sound.

"Don't listen to him, Amara.""

Thomas tightened his grip on the gun.

"Quiet.""

Richard took a step forward.

"You were my father's driver. You knew Elena. You knew what happened at Willow Bridge.""

"I knew what I was told to know.""

"Then tell us the truth.""

Thomas's eyes flashed.

"The truth? You want the truth now, Richard? Where was your curiosity when your father ordered me to take a frightened woman to a private clinic? Where was your courage when he told you she was dead?""

Richard looked stricken.

"I was in the hospital.""

"And when you left the hospital, you went straight back to work. You sat in his office. You signed his papers. You took over his company.""

"Because he threatened my daughter!""

Thomas laughed.

"Your daughter? You didn't even know where she was.""

Richard flinched.

I stepped out from behind him.

"Then tell me where my mother was.""

Thomas turned toward me.

For a moment, his expression changed. The gun lowered slightly.

"She was at Ashford House.""

My mother began to cry.

"They told me you'd died," she whispered to me.

"They said your grandmother had been killed in the crash, and that no one knew where you were.""

I rushed toward her, but Thomas raised the gun again.

"Stay where you are!""

I stopped.

My mother looked at me desperately.

"I tried to come home, Amara. I tried every year.""

The words tore through me.

"Why didn't you?""

"They wouldn't let me.""

"Who?""

"My grandfather," Richard answered quietly.

Thomas nodded.

"Arthur had connections everywhere. He controlled the doctors, the records, the money. Elena was declared unstable after the accident. He made sure she couldn't leave the facility without his approval.""

"That doesn't explain why she couldn't call me," I said.

Thomas looked down.

"It does when you understand that every letter she wrote was intercepted. Every request she made was denied. Every person who tried to help her was threatened.""

My mother struggled against the restraints.

"I wrote hundreds of letters.""

I felt something inside me break.

Hundreds.

All those birthdays.

All those school ceremonies.

All those nights when I'd wondered whether she remembered me.

She had remembered.

She had been trying to reach me.

And someone had made sure I never knew.

Thomas shifted the gun toward Richard.

"Arthur told me to keep Elena quiet. He said she had stolen confidential documents and threatened to expose the company. He said if she ever escaped, the entire Bennett family would be ruined.""

"What documents?"" Marcus asked from the hallway.

Thomas looked toward him.

"The ones that proved Arthur had been using the company to move money through shell accounts. He'd been stealing from his own shareholders for years.""

Richard stared at him.

"My father embezzled money?""

"Millions.""

Thomas's voice hardened.

"Elena found the records by accident. She was helping Richard organize files at the old office when she noticed payments to companies that didn't exist. She copied everything.""

My mother nodded through her tears.

"I told Richard what I'd found. I thought he'd help me expose his father.""

Richard's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?""

"I tried!"" she cried.

"Your father intercepted my calls. He told me you had chosen the company over me. He showed me documents proving you'd signed the transfer papers that made it possible to hide the money.""

Richard went completely still.

"What transfer papers?""

Thomas smiled.

"The ones you signed after your accident.""

Richard shook his head.

"I signed dozens of documents in the hospital.""

"Exactly.""

I looked between them.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas raised the gun slightly.

"It means Arthur forged Richard's authorization on the papers that transferred Elena's evidence into a private trust. Richard never knew what he was signing.""

Richard looked as though he'd been struck.

"My father used my name.""

"He used everyone's name," Thomas replied.

"Mine. Daniel Whitmore's. Yours.""

He turned toward Brielle.

"And hers.""

Brielle stood beside the window, her face drained of color.

"My father said he was protecting us.""

Thomas gave a bitter smile.

"Your father protected himself. He agreed to help Arthur silence Elena because he was being paid to do it. When Arthur died, Daniel inherited the trust and kept the arrangement alive.""

Brielle shook her head.

"No. That's not true.""

Thomas looked at her.

"Ask your father what happened to the medical records. Ask him why he paid a private clinic to keep a woman locked away for seventeen years.""

Brielle's lips parted.

For the first time, she looked less like a bully and more like a frightened child who had discovered the adults around her were monsters.

"I didn't know," she whispered.

I stared at her.

"You tied my mother to a chair.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I was trying to get the documents.""

"You threatened her.""

"I thought she was lying!""

"You sent me photographs of her bound to a chair!""

Brielle looked down.

"I didn't think you'd come.""

I laughed, a sharp, broken sound.

"Of course I came. She's my mother.""

Brielle's shoulders trembled.

Then she looked toward the door.

"My father said if Amara found Elena, she'd destroy our family. He told me the Bennett company would collapse, and we'd lose everything.""

I stepped toward her.

"So you decided I should lose my mother again?""

She had no answer.

Thomas suddenly grabbed the edge of the doorframe.

His face twisted in pain.

Richard noticed.

"Thomas, what's wrong?""

The old driver stumbled.

His gun wavered.

Detective Mitchell seized the opportunity.

"Drop it!""

Thomas turned toward her.

A shot rang out.

I screamed.

The gun clattered across the floor.

Thomas collapsed against the wall, clutching his shoulder.

Officers rushed forward, securing his hands and calling for medical assistance.

Richard ran to my mother.

He dropped to his knees and began cutting through the restraints with a small tool Marcus handed him.

"Elena," he whispered.

"Elena, look at me.""

She stared at him.

For a long moment, she didn't move.

Then she slapped him.

The sound cracked through the room.

Richard closed his eyes.

"I deserved that.""

"You let them tell you I was dead.""

"I know.""

"You let them take my daughter.""

"I know.""

"You built your life while I sat in a locked room, wondering if my baby was alive.""

Richard bowed his head.

"I'm sorry.""

My mother began to cry harder.

"I don't want your apologies, Richard. I wanted you to come looking.""

He reached for her hand, then stopped before touching it.

"I should have kept looking.""

She looked away.

I knelt beside her.

"Mom?""

She turned toward me.

Her eyes moved over my face as if she were trying to memorize every detail.

"You're so grown up.""

I laughed through my tears.

"You missed a lot.""

"I know.""

"You missed my first day of school. My birthdays. My graduation.""

"I know, sweetheart.""

"You missed everything.""

She covered her mouth.

"I know.""

I wanted to tell her I forgave her.

I wanted to throw my arms around her and pretend the seventeen years between us had never happened.

But I couldn't.

Not yet.

Instead, I reached for her hand.

She took mine and held it as tightly as she could.

For several seconds, that was enough.

Then Detective Mitchell approached.

"Elena, we need to get you to a hospital. You can tell us everything when you're safe.""

My mother nodded weakly.

As the paramedics arrived, Thomas was lifted onto a stretcher. His face had gone gray, but his eyes remained fixed on Richard.

"You still don't understand," he rasped.

Richard turned.

"Understand what?""

Thomas gave a faint, bitter smile.

"Arthur wasn't the one who ordered the accident.""

The room fell silent.

My mother stopped crying.

Richard stared at him.

"What did you say?""

Thomas swallowed.

"Arthur wanted Elena silenced, yes. But he didn't order the crash at Willow Bridge.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Then who did?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"Daniel Whitmore didn't make that decision either.""

Brielle covered her mouth.

Thomas took a shallow breath.

"The person who arranged the crash was someone Elena trusted more than anyone.""

My mother began shaking her head.

"No.""

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry, Elena. But you deserve to know.""

He looked at Richard.

Then at me.

"The order came from Ruth Cole.""

My grandmother's name struck the room like a gunshot.

I stumbled backward.

"No.""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"She wanted Elena out of the way before she could expose the truth about your birth.""

May you like

My mother let out a broken scream.

And in that moment, every memory I had of the woman who raised me became something I no longer knew how to trust.
