Chapter 9: The Threat Against My Daughter

I called the police before I called anyone else.
The photograph showed Nia walking toward the school pickup area, her backpack hanging from one shoulder. It had been taken from across the street, close enough to capture her face clearly.
There was no visible threat of physical harm.
But the message accompanying it was unmistakable.
Someone wanted me to stop investigating the old agreement, and they had chosen my twelve-year-old daughter to make sure I understood the consequences of refusing.
I sent the original message and photograph to the authorities, preserved the sender information, and contacted the school to arrange a temporary change to Nia's pickup procedure.
Then I called David.
"Someone photographed Nia outside school.""
His voice changed immediately.
"What?""
I explained everything.
"Where is she now?""
"At home with my mother.""
"Stay there. I'm coming over.""
When David arrived, he checked the doors and windows, then sat across from me at the kitchen table.
"Have you told Richard?""
"He's on his way.""
"Good. And don't contact Vanessa or Daniel until we know more.""
I rubbed my face.
"I heard another man on Vanessa's phone. She hung up when I asked who it was.""
"Could it have been Daniel?""
"I don't know.""
David leaned forward.
"Michael, I know you're trying to figure out who did what. But right now, the priority is keeping Nia safe.""
"I know.""
"Then don't let your anger make you careless.""
I looked toward the living room, where Nia was drawing at the coffee table.
She had no idea that someone had taken her photograph outside school.
I hadn't told her yet because I wanted to understand the situation before frightening her.
But I also knew I couldn't keep secrets from her in the name of protecting her. She had already suffered because adults had withheld the truth.
That evening, after Richard and the officers had discussed the situation with us, I sat beside Nia.
"Bug, I need to tell you something.""
She put down her pencil.
"Is it about Vanessa?""
"Not exactly.""
I showed her the photograph and explained that someone had taken it without our permission. I told her the authorities were aware and that we were making arrangements to keep her safe.
She stared at the image.
"Who took it?""
"We don't know yet.""
"Are they angry with you?""
"Possibly.""
"Because of the wedding?""
"Because I'm investigating some things that may involve money and old business agreements.""
She was quiet for a long time.
Then she asked, "Did Vanessa tell them where I go to school?""
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
Her eyes filled.
I moved closer.
"But I will find out. And no matter what happens, you are not responsible for any of this.""
She nodded, though I could see she was frightened.
"Can I stay with Grandma tonight?""
"Of course.""
She threw her arms around me.
I held her until she was ready to let go.
Later, Richard called with an update.
"The police are reviewing the message and photograph. We've also preserved the documents connected to the property claim. Don't respond to the sender.""
"Do you think Vanessa is involved?""
"I can't tell you that yet. The threat could have come from someone connected to the financial transactions, someone trying to protect their own interests, or someone attempting to make you suspect Vanessa.""
I stared at the dark window.
"What if it was the man I heard on her phone?""
"Then we'll need evidence connecting him to the message. Don't jump ahead of the facts.""
After the call, I sat at my desk and opened the records Daniel had provided.
One email caught my attention.
It was dated six weeks before the wedding.
The sender was Vanessa.
The recipient was an address associated with the company holding the adjacent land.
The subject line read: *Final Conditions.*
The message contained three paragraphs.
The first discussed the disputed assignment document.
The second referred to the wedding date.
The third contained a sentence that made me stop breathing for a moment.
Once Michael's family situation is settled, he will have fewer reasons to resist the arrangement.
I read it again.
Then I called Richard.
He arrived within forty minutes.
I showed him the email.
He studied it carefully.
"That phrase is ambiguous," he said.
"It could refer to a financial arrangement, a personal disagreement, or something else. We shouldn't interpret it without context.""
"But the timing is the same as Vanessa's behavior toward Nia.""
"Yes. It's relevant. It isn't conclusive.""
I hated the caution, but I knew he was right.
"What else do we have?""
Richard opened another folder.
"The company holding the adjacent land was registered by a corporate services provider. Its listed director is a man named Andrew Pike.""
"Do we know him?""
"Not yet. But the financial records show payments to an account connected to him.""
I searched the name in my own memory.
Nothing.
Richard continued.
"Daniel says Pike was involved in the original property discussions. He claims Pike presented the assignment document to Vanessa.""
"Then Pike may be the man I heard on her phone.""
"Possibly.""
Richard looked at me.
"We need to locate him and establish his role. But we'll do that through the appropriate channels.""
The next morning, Daniel agreed to meet us at Richard's office.
He looked exhausted. His tie was crooked, and there were dark circles beneath his eyes.
"I received the threat, too," he said.
I stared at him.
"What threat?""
He showed us a message from an unknown number.
You should have stayed quiet. Your family isn't the only one who can be hurt.
Daniel's hands trembled.
"I don't have children, but my sister has two young boys. Someone sent me a photograph of their house.""
Richard immediately documented the message.
"Have you reported this?""
"Yes.""
I studied Daniel.
"Who is Andrew Pike?""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"A consultant who worked with Evelyn Reed. He helped manage some of her property interests after she became ill.""
"Did he create the holding company?""
"I suspect he did, but I can't prove it.""
"What did Vanessa tell you about him?""
Daniel looked away.
"She said he was helping her settle her mother's affairs.""
"Did he know about the disputed assignment?""
"Yes.""
"Did he know about the wedding?""
Daniel hesitated.
"He knew the date. Vanessa told him she needed the property documents finalized before the ceremony.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Why before the ceremony?""
"She believed that once she was legally married to Michael, she would have more leverage in negotiations.""
I felt a cold anger settle in my chest.
"Leverage over what?""
"The old property claim. The holding company wanted to acquire the adjacent land, but it needed to establish an interest in the industrial park first. Vanessa believed Michael's signature on the revised agreement would make that easier.""
"How?""
Daniel shook his head.
"She didn't explain every detail to me. I think she was being advised by Pike.""
Richard made a note.
"Did you see the original assignment document?""
"No. Pike showed me a scanned copy.""
"Did you question the signatures?""
"I questioned the dates. He told me the originals were stored with Evelyn's estate records.""
"Did you verify that?""
"No.""
I stared at him.
"You were the financial director of my company.""
"I know.""
"You knew the money was moving through questionable accounts, and you kept helping.""
Daniel lowered his head.
"Yes.""
The admission was ugly, but I needed it.
"Why are you cooperating now?""
He looked up.
"Because I realized Vanessa wasn't going to protect me. She was going to let me take the blame while she claimed she had no knowledge of the transfers.""
"How do you know?""
Daniel removed a printed email from his bag.
"This was sent to me the night before the wedding.""
The message came from Vanessa.
If anything goes wrong, tell them you acted without my knowledge. Do not mention the property documents or the conversations with Pike.
I read it twice.
Richard took the page.
"Where is the original email?""
"On my account. I've preserved it.""
"Good. We'll arrange a proper export and authentication.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"There's something else. Pike told Vanessa that if the marriage didn't happen, the property arrangement would become much harder to complete.""
"Why?""
"Because the revised agreement was supposed to create a new financial relationship between Michael and Vanessa. It would have given her access to information about the company and potentially supported the claim that she had an interest in certain assets.""
Richard nodded slowly.
"That may explain the urgency. It doesn't establish that the underlying claim was valid.""
I looked at Daniel.
"And Nia?""
He swallowed.
"I heard Vanessa say she needed the wedding to go smoothly. She said Michael wouldn't sign anything if he became upset over a family dispute.""
"So she tried to get my daughter out of the way.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"That's what I believe.""
I felt sick.
For all the questions surrounding the money, the property, and the forged documents, the cruelest part remained the simplest.
Vanessa had looked at a twelve-year-old girl and decided that her presence was a threat to a plan.
She had not merely failed to protect Nia.
She had deliberately made her feel unwanted.
Richard collected the papers.
"We have enough to pursue further inquiries, but we still need evidence linking Pike to the threat.""
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message.
Ask Daniel what happened to the original ledger.
I turned the screen toward Richard.
Daniel's face changed immediately.
"What ledger?"" I demanded.
He stared at the message.
Then he rubbed both hands over his face.
"The original financial ledger from Evelyn's partnership.""
"Where is it?""
"I don't know.""
"You just told me you had copies of the accounting records.""
"I have digital backups. The original ledger was stored with Pike's documents.""
"Then why would someone ask me about it?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because the ledger contains the original distribution terms. If the assignment document was altered, the ledger might reveal who was entitled to what.""
Richard's expression tightened.
"Did you ever see the original?""
"Yes.""
"Did it contain a claim against the industrial park?""
"It contained the original loan, the repayment schedule, and a clause about the property's future value. But I never saw a valid extension of the claim.""
I looked at Richard.
"If the ledger proves the claim expired, then someone may have forged the assignment to revive it.""
"That is one possibility.""
I turned back to Daniel.
"Who had access to the ledger?""
"Andrew Pike. Vanessa. Possibly other people connected to Evelyn's estate.""
"Could the ledger prove Vanessa knew the claim had expired?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes.""
Richard leaned forward.
"Why didn't you tell us about this earlier?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of whom?""
Daniel looked toward the window.
"Andrew Pike.""
The room fell silent.
Then Daniel spoke in a low voice.
"Pike isn't just a consultant. He was Evelyn's closest adviser for nearly twenty years. He handled her investments, her property disputes, and her private records. After she died, he controlled most of the files.""
"And Vanessa trusted him?""
"She believed he was helping her fulfill her mother's wishes.""
"Was he?""
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
"I think he was using her.""
My phone vibrated again.
This time, the message included a photograph.
It showed an old leather ledger resting on a wooden desk.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
The truth about your father is inside. Come alone if you want to know why he really died.
I stared at the photograph.
My father had died after a sudden heart attack at fifty-eight. The doctors had found no evidence of foul play. He had been under enormous stress during the final months of his life, but nobody had ever suggested anything sinister.
Richard took the phone from me and examined the image.
"This is designed to provoke you.""
"I know.""
"Don't go anywhere alone.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The ledger had a brass clasp and a small tear near the lower corner.
My mother had shown me an identical ledger in the metal box that morning.
But the one in the photograph looked newer.
The cover was clean, the clasp polished, and the edges undamaged.
"Richard," I said slowly, "I think the photograph is of a different ledger.""
He looked closer.
"Why?""
"Because my father kept his records in a battered brown ledger. The cover was torn, and the brass clasp was broken. I remember seeing it when I was a teenager.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Then someone has created a prop to make you believe they have the original.""
"Or they're showing us a different record.""
Richard returned the phone.
"Either way, we don't respond.""
But I couldn't stop thinking about the message.
Come alone.
Whoever had sent it knew enough about my father to understand which fear would hurt me most.
I went home that evening and found Nia sitting at the kitchen table, drawing yellow tulips.
She looked up when I entered.
"Are we safe?""
I put my phone away and sat beside her.
"We're taking precautions. The police are helping us.""
"Are you going to stop investigating?""
I looked at her.
"Someone threatened you because they want me to stop.""
She nodded.
"Then you shouldn't stop.""
I blinked.
"Nia, I don't want you to feel responsible for what happens next.""
"I'm not. But if you stop, won't they think they can scare us whenever they want?""
I pulled her into a hug.
"You shouldn't have to be this brave.""
She rested her head against me.
"I know. But I'm your daughter.""
I closed my eyes.
That night, I decided I would not let fear make my choices.
But I also wouldn't let anger make them for me.
The following morning, Richard received a call from the document examiner.
The formal report was ready.
The signature attributed to my mother on the assignment document was not consistent with her verified handwriting. Several features suggested the signature might have been traced or digitally reproduced, although further investigation would be required to establish who created it.
The document's paper and printing characteristics also raised questions about whether it had been produced on the date it claimed.
We now had independent evidence that the assignment document was likely not authentic.
Richard arranged to provide the findings to the investigators handling the financial matter.
Then he opened an email that had arrived minutes earlier.
The sender was a representative of Evelyn Reed's estate.
The message contained a short statement.
The estate has no original record of an assignment transferring the disputed claim to Vanessa Reed or any company associated with her.
I read it slowly.
If the estate had no record of the assignment, and the signature on the document was suspect, then the foundation of the property claim was beginning to collapse.
But the threat against Nia remained unexplained.
So did the mysterious ledger.
And then Richard found an attachment buried beneath the estate representative's message.
It was a scanned letter written by Evelyn Reed shortly before her death.
The letter was addressed to Andrew Pike.
Its final paragraph read:
If Michael Carter ever discovers what happened to Thomas Bell's original ledger, make sure he understands that the person who altered the accounts was not the person who benefited most from them.
Richard looked at me.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Because beneath Evelyn's signature was a second handwritten note.
May you like
One that had been added later.
*The original ledger was last recorded in the possession of Margaret Carter.*
