Chapter 4: The Photograph Inside the Envelope

For several seconds, I couldn't bring myself to open the envelope.
Daniel Mercer stood in front of me with the calm expression of a man who had spent months rehearsing this moment. Vanessa, meanwhile, looked as if the floor beneath her expensive wedding shoes had begun to crack.
“Michael,” she said, her voice barely audible, “please give me that envelope.””
I tightened my fingers around it.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel is trying to destroy us.””
Daniel laughed without humor.
“That's interesting, Vanessa. You didn't seem concerned about destroying anything when you asked me to help you change the financial agreement.””
“Shut up.””
“Or when you told me the wedding would make everything easier.””
“Daniel!””
Several guests had drifted toward the corridor. David appeared behind them, took one look at Daniel, and immediately moved to my side.
“Who's this?”” David asked.
“The man who used to handle my company's finances,” I replied.
Daniel offered David a polite nod.
“And the man who knows exactly why Michael's bride is so desperate to keep him from opening that envelope.””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“This is a private matter.””
“No,” I said.
“It's my wedding, my company, and apparently my money. Everyone can stay.””
I slid my finger beneath the envelope's flap.
Vanessa grabbed my wrist.
“Michael, I'm begging you.””
I looked at her hand.
She released me.
Inside were three photographs, a printed bank transfer confirmation, and several pages of emails.
The first photograph showed Vanessa sitting across from Daniel at a restaurant. They were holding hands across the table.
That alone meant little. The photograph could have been old. The date wasn't visible.
The second photograph showed them kissing beside a black SUV.
The third made my stomach turn.
Vanessa was standing outside my company's headquarters, holding a document folder. Daniel was beside her, and both were looking directly toward the building's glass entrance.
On the back, someone had written a date.
Six months earlier.
The same week Daniel resigned.
I looked at him.
“You've been seeing her while you were working for me?””
Daniel shook his head.
“The relationship ended before you and Vanessa became engaged. I'm not here because I want her back.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Then why are you here?””
“Because you told me this morning that once Michael signed the agreement, you'd pay me what you owed.””
I turned toward her.
“What does he mean?””
She shook her head quickly.
“He's lying. We were discussing an old personal loan.””
Daniel removed the bank transfer confirmation from my hand and pointed to a line near the bottom.
“Look at the account number.””
I recognized the final four digits.
They belonged to an account associated with Carter Development.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“That account was closed.””
“Officially,” Daniel replied.
“But the transfer was made before the account was frozen.””
I scanned the document.
The amount was $180,000.
The sender was a company I didn't recognize.
The recipient was an account registered under Vanessa's name.
“What is this?”” I asked.
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Michael, I can explain.””
“That's the third time you've said that. You haven't explained anything.””
She looked toward the guests.
“Could you please stop interrogating me in front of everyone?””
I held up the transfer confirmation.
“Then tell me why a company I don't recognize sent you a hundred and eighty thousand dollars from an account connected to my business.””
Daniel answered before she could.
“Because the company was created to receive money from a development project that never existed.””
Silence swallowed the corridor.
David stared at him.
“What?””
Daniel continued, his voice steady.
“Six months ago, I discovered that invoices were being submitted for construction work at a property your company didn't own. The invoices were approved, payments were released, and the money moved through two intermediary businesses.””
I looked at the name of the sender again.
“Who approved the invoices?””
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“Someone using credentials assigned to your executive office.””
My mind raced through months of company records, signatures, approvals, and meetings.
“Are you accusing Vanessa of stealing from me?””
“I'm telling you the money ended up in her account.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You promised me you would never bring this up again!””
Daniel looked at her.
“You promised me I wouldn't be left holding the blame.””
“You were the financial director!””
“And you were the person asking me to move the money!””
The words exploded between them.
A woman standing near the doorway covered her mouth.
I felt as if I were watching strangers argue over the wreckage of my life.
“Enough,” I said.
Both of them turned.
I pointed at Daniel.
“You're going to tell me everything you know. And you're going to show me the records that support it.””
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“You're going to tell me whether you received money connected to my company.””
She began crying.
Not the quiet tears she had used when asking me to forgive her for her earlier comments about Nia.
These were frantic, desperate tears.
“I didn't steal from you,” she whispered.
“Then where did the money come from?””
“Daniel told me it was legitimate.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa pointed at him.
“He said the project was real. He said the invoices had already been approved. He told me the money was payment for consulting work.””
“What consulting work?”” I demanded.
She looked away.
“I helped him with some administrative arrangements.””
“For a nonexistent development?””
“I didn't know it was nonexistent!””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You knew enough to ask me to delete the emails.””
Vanessa went still.
I looked at her.
“Did you?””
She didn't answer.
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
It was the calm that came when anger became too large to contain. Every excuse I had made for her, every warning I had dismissed, every time Nia had looked at me with uncertainty suddenly rearranged itself in my mind.
I thought of the morning Vanessa had insisted that I sign the final wedding documents early.
I thought of the way she had wanted the prenuptial agreement completed before the ceremony.
I thought of her message about getting Nia out.
The pieces didn't yet form a complete picture, but they formed something ugly.
“You wanted me to sign the altered agreement,” I said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That had nothing to do with this.””
“Then why did Daniel say you were waiting for my signature?””
“Because he was trying to manipulate me!””
Daniel pulled another sheet from the envelope.
“This is a copy of a message you sent me three weeks ago.””
He held it out.
Vanessa lunged for the paper, but David stepped between them.
“Don't,” David warned.
Daniel read aloud.
“Once the wedding is over, Michael will stop questioning everything. I'll have access to the accounts, and we'll settle the remaining balance.””
My chest tightened.
I took the page.
The message appeared to have come from Vanessa's phone number. The wording was unmistakable.
I read it twice.
Then I looked at the woman I had planned to marry.
“Was any of this real?””
Vanessa pressed both hands against her face.
“Michael, I love you.””
I stared at her.
“That's not an answer.””
“I do love you.””
“Did you plan to marry me because you wanted a life with me, or because you wanted access to my company?””
She lowered her hands.
For a moment, her face looked younger, almost frightened.
“I didn't plan for things to happen this way.””
“That's still not an answer.””
She looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
Finally, she whispered, “At first, I thought it would be temporary.””
The words hit harder than a confession shouted in anger.
“At first?”” I repeated.
She began crying harder.
“Daniel was in trouble. I had already helped him with some things. Then the audit started, and everything became complicated. I was afraid.””
“So you decided to marry me?””
“No! I met you before any of this became serious.””
“Then when did it become serious?””
She couldn't answer.
I felt the envelope crumple in my hand.
“You let my daughter believe she was unwanted in her own family because you were afraid she might interfere with your plans.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I wasn't thinking about that.””
“That is the problem.””
For the first time, she seemed to understand that tears wouldn't repair what she had broken.
She stepped toward me.
“Michael, please. We can fix this. I'll give you the money.
I'll tell you everything. We can postpone the wedding and work through it privately.””
I took a step back.
“Postpone?””
Her eyes widened.
“Yes. We don't have to decide anything today.””
I looked toward the gardens.
The guests were still waiting. The flowers were still arranged beneath the arch. The wedding cake stood beneath its glass cover, untouched.
An hour earlier, I had imagined dancing with Vanessa while Nia laughed at my terrible footwork.
Now my daughter was sitting alone in a private room, wondering why someone she had trusted had tried to throw her out.
“No,” I said.
Vanessa froze.
“Michael…”
“There is no wedding.””
Her bouquet slipped from her hand.
White roses scattered across the stone floor.
I turned to David.
“Take me to Nia.””
As we walked away, Daniel called after me.
“Michael, there's something else you need to know.””
I stopped without turning.
He hesitated.
Then he said, “The money wasn't the only reason Vanessa wanted you to sign that agreement.””
I slowly faced him.
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
“She was afraid that after the wedding, you'd discover who really created the company that received the transfers.””
Vanessa's face went completely white.
Daniel reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a single sheet bearing a corporate registration number.
And when I saw the name listed as the company's original owner, I realized the person at the center of this scandal might be someone I had trusted for far longer than Vanessa.
