Amused

Chapter 3: My Mother's Signature

For several seconds, I couldn't understand what I was looking at.

My mother's name was printed beneath a paragraph describing financial assistance.

Beside it was a handwritten signature.

Margaret Hayes.

My mother's signature.

I knew it as well as I knew my own.

I'd watched her sign birthday cards, school forms, mortgage documents, and the hospital paperwork when our father died.

There was no mistaking it.

Daniel held the document in front of her.

"Mom.""

Margaret's lips parted.

"Daniel, I can explain.""

He laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"That's what Claire keeps saying.""

My mother reached for the paper.

He pulled it away.

"Don't.""

"You're misunderstanding what this is.""

"Then explain the $18,500.""

Her face went pale.

I leaned closer.

The document listed several transfers over a period of six months.

Some were marked as consultation expenses.

Others were described as administrative fees and personal support payments.

The total was $18,500.

Daniel stared at the number.

"Did you pay for this?""

Margaret adjusted her necklace.

"I was helping Claire.""

"With what?""

"Her situation.""

"What situation?""

She glanced around the room.

Forty guests were watching us.

The country club staff had stopped clearing the tables.

One of the women near the entrance was quietly gathering her purse, clearly wishing she could disappear.

My mother lowered her voice.

"Daniel, this is a private family matter.""

He raised the document.

"You paid eighteen thousand five hundred dollars to help my wife pretend she was pregnant. And you think this is private?""

Margaret's chin trembled.

"Please don't speak to me like that.""

"Then give me a reason not to.""

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

"Daniel, stop attacking your mother!""

He looked at her.

"Why? Is she part of this too?""

"She was trying to help!""

"Help whom?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"Me.""

I felt Sophie tighten her arms around my neck.

I kissed her forehead.

"Let's go sit down, sweetheart.""

But Sophie shook her head.

"No, Mommy.""

She pointed toward Claire.

"Aunt Claire was crying in the bathroom.""

I looked at her.

"What do you mean?""

"Before the party. She was talking to Grandma.""

My mother turned sharply.

"Sophie, sweetheart, you shouldn't repeat things you hear adults discussing.""

I looked at Sophie.

"It's okay. Just tell Mommy what you remember.""

Sophie rubbed her eyes.

"Grandma said Aunt Claire had to keep the tummy on until after the pictures.""

The room went silent.

Daniel slowly turned toward our mother.

"What pictures?""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Children misunderstand things.""

Sophie continued.

"Grandma said the man with the camera had to take lots of pictures because the lady wanted to show somebody.""

Claire covered her face.

Daniel looked at the photographer near the entrance.

"Who hired you?""

The photographer looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Hayes did.""

Daniel turned toward our mother.

"You hired the photographer?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes. I wanted the day documented.""

"Why?""

"Because this was an important family occasion.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Important for whom?""

No one answered.

Then my mother made a mistake.

A very revealing mistake.

She looked at Claire and said, "I told you we should have waited until after the announcement.""

Daniel heard her.

His eyes narrowed.

"What announcement?""

Margaret looked as if she had bitten her tongue.

Claire whispered, "Mom, don't.""

But it was too late.

Daniel placed the document on the table.

"What announcement?""

Margaret straightened her dress.

"Claire wanted to surprise you.""

"With what?""

"A baby.""

"There is no baby!""

My mother flinched.

Claire started crying again.

Then Angela finally stepped forward.

"Maybe I should explain what the money was for.""

Margaret turned toward her.

"Angela, this is none of your business.""

Angela looked directly at her.

"Actually, Mrs. Hayes, you were the one who contacted our office.""

My mother went still.

Angela continued.

"You asked about our private surrogacy consultation program. You wanted to know whether a family member could make arrangements without the intended father's involvement.""

Daniel stared.

"Surrogacy?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Angela nodded.

"Claire had initially asked about using a gestational carrier. But the arrangements never progressed beyond preliminary discussions.""

Daniel looked at Claire.

"You wanted a surrogate?""

Claire wiped her cheeks.

"I wanted to have a baby.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I knew you'd ask questions.""

"What questions?""

She looked down.

"About the money. About the medical history. About everything.""

Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.

"Claire, I would have gone through any process with you. I would have paid for treatment. I would have adopted. I would have done anything.""

He paused.

"But I would have wanted to know.""

Claire sobbed.

"I thought if I could just get everything ready, you'd understand.""

"Get what ready?""

She looked toward the balloon arch.

The cake.

The presents.

The expensive nursery-themed decorations.

Then she said something that made even Angela look shocked.

"I wanted you to sign the birth registration paperwork.""

Daniel blinked.

"What?""

Claire nodded.

"I thought we'd tell everyone the baby had arrived early. We could say the delivery happened unexpectedly. I had everything planned.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Claire!""

But Daniel was already staring at his wife.

"You were going to invent a birth?""

She began shaking.

"I wasn't going to keep lying forever!""

"How long?""

"I don't know!""

"How long, Claire?""

She covered her face.

"I just needed more time.""

Daniel turned away and put both hands against the edge of the table.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I didn't know how.

The room felt like it was shrinking around us.

Then he asked a question that nobody expected.

"Who was the baby?""

Claire looked up.

"What?""

"The baby you were going to bring home. Who was it?""

Angela's face changed.

My mother looked down.

And Claire didn't answer.

Daniel took one step toward her.

"Was there actually a child involved?""

Claire shook her head.

"No.""

"Then what was the plan?""

She began crying harder.

Angela reached into her handbag again.

This time she removed a folded brochure.

It showed a smiling couple holding a newborn.

The headline read:

*PRIVATE FAMILY PLACEMENT SERVICES — BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY TODAY.*

Daniel took it.

Then he noticed something written in blue ink across the bottom.

A name.

A date.

And a phone number.

He stared at the handwriting.

"Who wrote this?""

Angela looked at Margaret.

"Your mother did.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Mom?""

Margaret finally broke.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She took a shaky breath.

"From the truth.""

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"What truth?""

My mother looked at Claire.

Then at me.

Then back at Daniel.

Finally, she whispered:

"Claire wasn't the only person who knew this pregnancy was fake.""

Daniel stepped backward.

"Who else?""

Margaret's face crumpled.

"I knew from the beginning.""

He shook his head.

"No. That's impossible.""

"I found out in March.""

Daniel looked at the calendar decorations still hanging above the dessert table.

March.

Seven months ago.

The exact month Claire had announced her pregnancy.

My mother continued.

"Claire came to me because she was afraid you'd leave her if you found out she couldn't have children.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"Couldn't have children?""

Claire lowered her head.

My mother nodded.

"She had received some difficult medical news. She was devastated. I told her you loved her and would understand, but she wouldn't listen.""

Daniel stared at her.

"So you helped her lie?""

"I thought it would only be temporary.""

"You paid for the belly?""

Margaret nodded.

"You arranged the appointments?""

Another nod.

"You helped her fake the ultrasound pictures?""

My mother began crying.

"I didn't know how far she would take it.""

Daniel looked at the floor.

Then he asked the question that destroyed whatever remained of his patience.

"Did you know she was planning to use someone else's baby?""

Margaret didn't answer.

Claire suddenly shouted.

"Stop making me look like a monster!""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then tell me what happened!""

She pressed both hands against her artificial belly.

For the first time, she seemed to realize how ridiculous it looked.

Her fingers trembled as she pulled at the hidden straps beneath her dress.

The red foam insert slipped slightly.

A guest gasped.

Claire grabbed it and held it against herself.

Then she began sobbing.

"I didn't know how to tell you.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Tell me what?""

She slowly removed the prosthetic belly and placed it on the nearest chair.

The room seemed to exhale.

Without it, her pink dress hung loosely around her waist.

She looked smaller.

Much smaller.

"I went to the clinic in March," she whispered.

"They told me my chances of carrying a pregnancy were almost nonexistent.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I knew how much you wanted to be a father.""

He swallowed.

"That wasn't your decision to make.""

"I was scared you'd blame me.""

"I never would have blamed you.""

Claire shook her head.

"You don't understand.""

"Then help me understand.""

She looked at Angela.

Angela looked away.

Then Claire said something I never expected.

"The baby shower wasn't supposed to be for you.""

Daniel frowned.

"What?""

Claire wiped her face.

"It was supposed to be for the announcement.""

"What announcement?""

She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

Her hands shook as she opened a photograph.

It showed a tiny newborn baby wrapped in a white blanket.

Daniel stared at the screen.

My mother made a small sound.

Angela stepped forward.

"Claire, don't.""

But Claire held the phone toward Daniel.

"This is the baby I was going to bring home.""

Daniel looked at the picture.

Then at the date beneath it.

The baby had been photographed three weeks earlier.

He whispered, "Whose child is this?""

Claire couldn't answer.

My mother stepped forward.

"Daniel, please. You need to hear the whole story before you make any decisions.""

He turned toward her.

"Whose child is it?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

Then she looked at me.

And for the first time that afternoon, I felt genuinely afraid.

Because she wasn't looking at Daniel anymore.

She was looking directly at me.

"Emily," she whispered.

"There's something about that baby you need to know.""

Sophie lifted her head from my shoulder.

"Mommy?""

I held her tighter.

"What is it, sweetheart?""

She pointed at the photograph.

Then she whispered the words that made my blood run cold.

"That's the baby I saw Grandma holding last week.""

And suddenly, I understood.

This wasn't just about a fake pregnancy.

Someone had brought a real baby into our family's deception.

May you like

And my mother had been hiding that child from us.
