Amused

Chapter 4: The Secret My Wife Had Been Keeping

"Camila sent the documents?""

I repeated Diego's words so quietly that the nurse beside the incubator glanced at me.

"That's what I'm telling you," Diego answered.

"The board received an encrypted package twenty minutes ago. It contains original bank transfers, internal emails, and copies of the authorization forms from the San Jerónimo project.""

I stepped away from my son's incubator.

"Who has seen them?""

"Everyone on the board.""

"Get them deleted.""

A bitter laugh came through the phone.

"Mateo, these aren't pictures someone uploaded to a group chat. They're certified financial records. The board has already contacted its lawyers.""

"Then tell them there's an explanation.""

"What's the explanation?""

I tightened my jaw.

"I'll handle it.""

Diego hesitated.

"There's something else. Alejandro Serrano is listed as the original owner of the financial records.""

My eyes moved toward the NICU entrance.

"Find out where he is.""

"Why?""

"Because I want those documents.""

"Mateo, I don't think you understand how serious this is.""

"I understand perfectly.""

I ended the call.

For three years, I had believed Alejandro had left Monterrey with nothing.

I had watched his company collapse, his professional reputation disappear, and his name become associated with a financial scandal.

I had convinced myself that he would eventually accept defeat.

But now, somehow, he had returned with evidence that could dismantle the entire empire I had built.

And Camila had helped him.

My wife.

The woman who had never raised her voice against me.

The woman who had defended me even when her own mother questioned our marriage.

She had been keeping something from me.

I returned to the incubator.

My son was sleeping.

A tiny monitor displayed his heartbeat.

I pressed my palm against the glass.

"Your mother has some explaining to do, little man.""

The words sounded ugly even to me.

A nurse approached.

"Sir, your wife is asking for you.""

I turned so quickly that I nearly knocked over a chair.

"She's awake?""

"Briefly. The doctor says she can receive one visitor.""

I didn't wait for another instruction.

I followed the nurse.

Camila looked smaller than I remembered.

She lay beneath a white hospital blanket, surrounded by monitoring equipment. Her face was pale, and a thin tube ran beneath her nose.

Her hair had been brushed away from her forehead.

For a moment, I simply stood beside the bed.

Then I reached for her hand.

"Camila?""

Her eyelids moved.

She opened them slowly.

"Mateo?""

"I'm here.""

She stared at me.

There was no relief in her expression.

No smile.

No attempt to reach for me.

Only exhaustion.

"Where's my baby?""

"He's alive.""

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"Can I see him?""

"Not yet. He's in intensive care.""

"Is he breathing?""

"Yes.""

"Did he cry?""

I swallowed.

"He made a sound when they delivered him.""

Tears slid down her temples.

"Thank God.""

I leaned closer.

"Camila, you need to rest.""

She closed her eyes.

I waited until she opened them again.

"Why did you send those documents?""

Her expression changed.

"What?""

"The financial records. Diego says you sent evidence to the board.""

She looked at me for several seconds.

Then she turned her face toward the window.

"Not now, Mateo.""

I felt irritation rise.

"You nearly destroyed the company.""

She slowly turned back.

"I nearly destroyed the company?""

"Those documents are confidential.""

"So was the money you stole.""

I froze.

She had never spoken to me like that.

Not once in our entire marriage.

I glanced toward the door.

"Lower your voice.""

Camila gave a weak, humorless smile.

"I'm in a hospital bed. You don't need to worry about me shouting.""

"Do you understand what you've done?""

"Yes.""

"Then explain it.""

She closed her eyes again.

"Please leave.""

I stared at her.

"Camila.""

"Please.""

I leaned over the bed.

"After everything I've done for you—"

Her eyes opened.

"Everything you've done for me?""

The monitor beside her continued its steady rhythm.

She took a shallow breath.

"Mateo, I sold my grandmother's jewelry to keep your employees paid. I signed away my inheritance when the banks threatened to seize the company. I sat beside you every night while you rebuilt your father's business.""

She paused.

"And when Alejandro told me you had used his signature, I begged him not to expose you.""

My mouth went dry.

"You knew?""

"I knew enough.""

"How long?""

"Three years.""

I stepped back.

She continued.

"I asked you whether you had stolen the money. You looked me in the eyes and told me Alejandro had betrayed you.""

"That's what happened.""

"No.""

Her voice was weak, but the word was firm.

"You betrayed him.""

I felt my face grow hot.

"Camila, you don't understand business.""

She looked at me.

"Perhaps I don't understand the kind of business where a man steals from his partner and then destroys his life to hide it.""

I had no answer.

She moved her hand toward the blanket.

"Where is Alejandro?""

The question felt like a slap.

"Why?""

"Is he here?""

"Yes.""

"Please ask him to come.""

I laughed once.

"You're asking for him?""

She looked at me with tired eyes.

"He's the reason I'm alive.""

I leaned closer.

"I'm your husband.""

"Then you should have answered your phone.""

Silence.

I looked at her.

She looked back.

And for the first time, I understood that the woman lying in front of me was no longer waiting for me to become the husband she had married.

She had stopped expecting anything.

"Camila, I was going to come home.""

She slowly shook her head.

"But you didn't.""

I tried to take her hand again.

She withdrew it.

"Please leave, Mateo.""

I stood there for several seconds.

Then I walked out.

Alejandro was sitting in the hospital cafeteria when I found him.

He had changed into a clean shirt, but there was still a faint stain near his sleeve.

A cup of untouched coffee sat in front of him.

He was reading something on his phone.

I stopped beside his table.

"Camila wants to see you.""

He looked up.

"Is she awake?""

"Yes.""

He stood immediately.

I blocked his path.

"Before you go, we need to talk.""

His eyes narrowed.

"About what?""

"The documents.""

He exhaled.

"Of course.""

"Where did you get them?""

"From the company's original accounting archive.""

"Those records belong to Villarreal Construction.""

"No. They belong to the investors who lost money because you used their capital to cover your father's debts.""

I lowered my voice.

"Listen carefully. You have no idea what you're getting involved in.""

Alejandro stared at me.

"Three years ago, I knew exactly what I was getting involved in. I told you not to forge my signature.""

"You can't prove that.""

He reached into his jacket and removed a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"Would you like to try?""

I didn't touch it.

"What is that?""

"An original authorization document. Your signature is on the transfer order. My name appears as the approving partner.""

I stared at the envelope.

He continued.

"Except I was in Madrid when the transfer was made.""

I remembered that trip.

Alejandro had attended an international construction conference.

I had signed the transfer myself.

I looked up.

"How did you get that?""

"Camila found it.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She found the original records in your father's old office.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"She also found the email you sent to Diego instructing him to alter the authorization files.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Alejandro leaned forward.

"Do you remember what you wrote?""

I said nothing.

He opened his phone and read aloud.

"'If Alejandro asks questions, make sure the revised documents are the only ones the board receives. He'll take the fall before anyone looks at my father's accounts.''"

I grabbed the envelope.

Alejandro caught my wrist.

"Don't.""

"Give it to me.""

"No.""

"That's my company.""

"Then you should have run it honestly.""

I stepped toward him.

"You think you can take everything from me?""

Alejandro looked toward the intensive care corridor.

"No, Mateo. You did that yourself.""

He released my wrist.

Then he walked away.

I remained beside the table, staring at the envelope.

My phone rang.

This time, it was the chairman of the board.

I answered.

"Mateo Villarreal.""

The chairman's voice was cold.

"Where are you?""

"Hospital.""

"We need you at the office immediately.""

"I'm not leaving.""

"Then listen carefully. Your position as managing director has been suspended pending investigation.""

I gripped the phone.

"You can't do that.""

"We already have.""

"On whose authority?""

"The board's.""

"You're making a mistake.""

"No, Mateo. We made a mistake three years ago when we believed you.""

The call ended.

And for the first time in my life, I realized that I might lose something money couldn't immediately replace.

My name.

My reputation.

My father's legacy.

But when I looked toward Camila's room, I knew those things were no longer my biggest problem.

Because my wife had finally stopped protecting me.

And she had chosen Alejandro Serrano to help her.

At 3:52 a.m., Alejandro entered Camila's room.

She was awake, looking at the ceiling.

When she heard the door, she turned.

"Alejandro?""

He approached the bed.

"How are you feeling?""

"Tired.""

He pulled a chair beside her.

"That's understandable.""

"Did you bring the documents?""

"Yes.""

"Did the board receive them?""

"Yes.""

She closed her eyes.

"Good.""

Alejandro watched her for a moment.

"Camila, you need to concentrate on recovering.""

She gave him a faint smile.

"You always say that.""

"Because you never listen.""

For the first time that night, she almost laughed.

Then her expression became serious.

"Did Mateo see them?""

"Yes.""

"What did he say?""

"Exactly what you'd expect.""

She looked toward the window.

"I should have told him sooner.""

"Why?""

"Because he was my husband.""

Alejandro remained silent.

Camila swallowed.

"I kept thinking that if I gave him enough time, he would tell the truth himself.""

"He had three years.""

"I know.""

She looked at him.

"Did you hate me?""

Alejandro frowned.

"For what?""

"For staying with him after what he did to you.""

He leaned back.

"Camila, you didn't steal my company.""

"But I defended him.""

"You were trying to save your marriage.""

Her eyes filled.

"I should have believed you.""

Alejandro shook his head.

"You believed what you could bear to believe. That's not the same thing.""

She looked down at her hands.

"I kept the original files because I knew one day he'd try to destroy you again.""

Alejandro's expression changed.

"Again?""

She nodded.

"Last month, Mateo asked me to sign some papers transferring ownership of the San Jerónimo properties into a new company.""

"Did you sign?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because I found another transfer hidden in the paperwork.""

She turned toward him.

"It wasn't just the original two million dollars, Alejandro. He moved another four million through a company registered under Valeria Montes's name.""

Alejandro went completely still.

"Valeria?""

"His assistant told me she was only a consultant. But I found the company registration.""

He leaned forward.

"Do you have copies?""

Camila nodded weakly.

"In the blue folder.""

"Where?""

"At home. Inside the nursery closet.""

Alejandro stared at her.

"Why would you keep evidence in the nursery?""

She gave a sad smile.

"Because Mateo never goes in there.""

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Then Camila reached for his hand.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Mateo doesn't know that I changed the beneficiary.""

Alejandro frowned.

"Beneficiary of what?""

She looked toward the door.

"Of the trust my grandmother left me.""

Alejandro's expression hardened.

"Camila, what have you done?""

May you like

She whispered four words.

"Everything is in my son's name.""
