Chapter 9: The Sister My Mother Hid
The photograph was taken outside a coffee shop.
A young woman stood near the window.
Dark hair.
Green jacket.
A familiar smile.
My heart stopped.
Because even though I had never met her…
I knew that smile.
It was my mother’s.
“She looks like her,” I whispered.
Dad took the phone.
His hands shook.
“Emily.””
He said the name quietly.
Like he was afraid saying it would make it real.
Olivia looked at me.
“You have a sister.””
I nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
A sister I never knew existed.
A sister my mother had protected.
A sister someone was hunting.
Dad immediately called the number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then the message disappeared.
Deleted.
Whoever sent it wanted us to see the picture.
Not contact them.
A warning.
A threat.
Robert looked at the phone.
“They know you found the documents.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Because we all knew.
Monica.
That afternoon, we found her.
Not hiding.
Not running.
Waiting.
She was sitting in the old family house.
The house she tried to steal.
When we entered, she didn’t look surprised.
“I wondered how long it would take.””
Dad stopped.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Emily.””
Monica smiled sadly.
“I knew about Claire’s secrets.””
My anger rose.
“You knew my mother.””
“I knew her better than you think.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You used her.””
Monica looked at me.
“I respected her.””
That almost made me laugh.
“Respect?””
“Yes.””
“Then why destroy her family?””
Her expression changed.
“Because she destroyed mine first.””
Nobody moved.
“What does that mean?”” Dad asked.
Monica looked at him.
“Claire took everything from me.””
Dad stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“You wouldn’t.””
She stood.
“My entire life, people chose Claire.””
There it was.
The resentment.
The thing underneath everything.
“You were jealous of my mother.””
Monica looked at me.
“I was invisible next to her.””
“That’s not her fault.””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“It was.””
Dad stepped forward.
“This ends now.””
Monica laughed.
“You still think this is about money.””
She walked toward the table.
“You really don’t understand your wife.””
“I understood enough to marry her.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You understood what Claire allowed you to see.””
She pulled out a folder.
Inside were old papers.
“Your wife wasn’t perfect.””
I looked at Dad.
He hesitated.
That scared me.
“What is that?””
Monica smiled.
“The truth.””
She handed him the folder.
Inside was a DNA test.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Dad read it.
His face changed.
“What?””
I looked.
The paper had two names.
Claire Reed.
Emily Claire Reed.
The result confirmed they were related.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
The shocking part was the date.
The test was done after my mother died.
Monica had known.
She had found Emily after all.
“Why?”” Dad whispered.
Monica looked at him.
“Because I wanted what Claire left behind.””
“Her child?””
“No.””
Her eyes moved to me.
“Her legacy.””
I felt sick.
“You were never trying to protect Olivia.””
For the first time, Monica looked at her daughter.
Olivia looked away.
“You were using her.””
Monica didn’t deny it.
That silence broke something in Olivia.
“I was your daughter.””
Monica’s face softened.
Only slightly.
“I did what I had to do.””
Olivia stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“You did what benefited you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A young woman stood there.
Green jacket.
Dark hair.
The same eyes as my mother.
My breath stopped.
She looked at me.
Then Dad.
Then Monica.
And whispered:
“Why are you all looking for me?””
Nobody answered.
Because the person we had been searching for…
Had found us first.
Emily stepped inside.
“I know who you are.””
She looked at me.
“Jasmine.””
I couldn’t speak.
She smiled sadly.
“Our mother talked about you.””
My eyes filled.
“She did?””
Emily nodded.
“All the time.””
Then she looked at Monica.
“And she warned me about you.””
Monica’s face changed.
Because suddenly, the one person she needed to control…
Was standing in front of her.
Emily reached into her bag.
May you like
And pulled out an envelope.
“I think you should all see what Claire left me.””
