Chapter 6: The Secret My Mother Left Behind
I read the sentence over and over.
“Step two begins when Jasmine discovers who her real mother was protecting her from.””
The words blurred together.
My mother.
Protecting me.
From someone.
I looked at Dad.
“Did Mom know?””
His face was pale.
“I don’t know.””
That answer hurt more than anything.
Because my father had always spoken about my mother like she was the strongest person he had ever known.
Claire Reed.
The woman who noticed everything.
The woman who remembered everyone’s birthday.
The woman who could tell when I was lying just by looking at my face.
And now I was realizing something terrifying.
She had seen something coming.
Maybe she had known Monica wasn’t who she pretended to be.
Maybe she had known someone would try to take what she left behind.
And maybe she had spent years preparing for the day I needed protection.
Olivia stood beside me, staring at the note.
“Jasmine…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her lips trembled.
“I think I know what this is about.””
Dad turned.
“You do?””
Olivia nodded slowly.
“Not everything.””
She looked down.
“But Mom used to talk about your mother.””
The room went quiet.
My heart started beating faster.
“What did she say?””
Olivia hesitated.
“Nothing good.””
I felt a chill.
“Explain.””
She sat down.
“When I was younger, I heard them arguing.””
“Who?””
“Mom and Daniel.””
Dad’s expression changed.
“When?””
“Years ago. Before she started managing your finances.””
Dad stepped closer.
“What did they argue about?””
Olivia swallowed.
“I don’t know. I was only thirteen.””
She closed her eyes.
“But I remember one thing.””
“What?””
“She said, ‘Claire was smarter than you thought.’”
Nobody spoke.
Because my mother’s name coming from Monica’s mouth felt like opening a locked door.
A door that had been closed for years.
Dad sat down slowly.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Olivia looked ashamed.
“Because Mom told me it was nothing.””
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“I always believed her.””
I understood that feeling.
Because I had believed her too.
The difference was that Olivia had been manipulated into hurting me.
I had been manipulated into trusting her.
Two daughters.
One person controlling both of us.
Dad picked up the file again.
“We need to find your mother’s original documents.””
“My mom’s documents?””
“The trust agreement. Anything she left behind.””
“But Monica had access to everything.””
Dad looked at me.
“Not everything.””
He walked to the old cabinet near the office.
I had seen that cabinet my entire life.
But I had never opened it.
Dad unlocked it.
Inside were boxes.
Photos.
Letters.
Old papers.
He pulled out a small wooden container.
“This belonged to your mother.””
I touched the lid.
My fingers shook.
I hadn’t touched something that belonged to her in years.
Dad handed it to me.
“She told me never to open it unless something happened.””
I looked up.
“What kind of something?””
He looked away.
“Unless I stopped protecting you.””
The room became silent.
I opened the box.
Inside were letters.
A necklace.
Old photographs.
And a sealed envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Jasmine.
My breathing stopped.
I opened it.
The handwriting immediately broke me.
My mother’s handwriting.
The same handwriting that used to appear on lunch notes in my backpack.
The same handwriting that wrote “I love you” on every birthday card.
I started reading.
“My beautiful Jasmine,
If you are reading this, I need you to understand something.
People will tell you that family is about blood.
They are wrong.
Family is about who protects you when no one is watching.””
I swallowed hard.
Dad looked away, giving me privacy.
The letter continued.
“When Marcus and I bought this house, we believed we were building a safe place for you.
But I learned something important.
A beautiful home can still hide dangerous people.””
My hand tightened around the paper.
The next sentence made my heart stop.
“I discovered that Monica was not honest about her past.””
I looked at Dad.
He froze.
“She knew.””
I kept reading.
“I didn’t tell Marcus everything because I was afraid of what he would do. He trusted people completely. Sometimes too much.””
My eyes moved across the page.
“Monica was connected to financial problems before she entered our lives. Daniel helped hide those problems.””
Dad whispered:
“No…”
The letter continued.
“I found evidence that Daniel and Monica had worked together before.””
My hands went cold.
“They were not trying to join our family. They were trying to enter it.””
I stopped reading.
Because suddenly every memory looked different.
Monica arriving.
Her kindness.
Her patience.
Her perfect timing.
None of it was random.
She didn’t find my father.
She found an opportunity.
Dad covered his mouth.
“She knew.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“She knew.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Your mother knew.””
I folded the letter.
“No.””
Dad looked at me.
“She didn’t leave because she wanted to hide things.””
I shook my head.
“She left because she was trying to protect us.””
A terrible silence followed.
Then Dad’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds later, his expression changed.
“What do you mean?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“The police found Daniel.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
Dad lowered the phone.
“He’s at the airport.””
“Running?””
Dad nodded.
“But before they reached him…”
He looked at the letter in my hand.
“He sent one final message.””
“What message?””
Dad stared at the screen.
Then turned the phone around.
A photo appeared.
A photo of my mother.
Taken years ago.
Standing beside Monica.
And Daniel.
But behind them was someone else.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected.
Dad’s older brother.
May you like
My uncle.
Robert.
