Chapter 8: The Person Closest To Me
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The words stayed in the air like smoke.
*The person standing closest to you the entire time.*
I looked around the room.
At Aaron.
At Marlene.
At Thomas.
Trying to understand.
Trying to find the answer hiding in their faces.
“Who?”” I asked.
My voice sounded strangely calm.
Too calm.
Thomas stared at me from the top of the stairs.
“You already know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, I don’t.””
“You do.””
“Then say the name.””
Thomas didn’t.
And that made something inside me snap.
“You spent sixteen years hiding from your own family. My wife disappeared. My daughter was threatened. Everyone around me knew pieces of the truth except me.””
I stepped toward him.
“So don’t stand there acting like I’m supposed to solve another puzzle.””
Thomas looked down.
For a moment, he didn’t look like a monster.
He looked like an old man carrying something too heavy.
“I never wanted Rachel involved.””
My jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to say her name like you protected her.””
“I loved my daughter.””
“Then where is she?””
The question hit him.
His face changed.
“She’s alive.””
The room went silent.
My knees almost weakened.
Alive.
A word I had waited six months to hear.
A word I was terrified to believe.
“Where?””
Thomas looked away.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I expect you to believe Rachel.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He pointed at the flash drive in my hand.
“That’s why she made it.””
I looked down.
“What’s on it?””
“Everything.””
Aaron stepped closer.
“Don’t plug it in here.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Thomas is right, whoever has been watching us knows we found it.””
Thomas nodded.
“He’s right.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Great.””
I looked between them.
“The man who faked his own death and the detective who hid evidence agree on something.””
Nobody responded.
Because it was true.
I had no idea who I could trust anymore.
And then I remembered Rachel’s hidden message.
*Trust no one.*
Even her own warning seemed impossible.
Because I had spent my entire marriage believing I knew the people around me.
I didn’t.
Thomas slowly walked down the stairs.
Marlene immediately stepped back.
The fear on her face was obvious.
He noticed.
“You still blame me.””
She looked at him.
“I should.””
His expression hardened.
“For what?””
“For making me believe you were dead.””
A silence passed between them.
Then Thomas said quietly:
“You were safer believing that.””
Marlene laughed.
A sad, angry sound.
“Was I?””
“No.””
The honesty surprised everyone.
Thomas looked at the floor.
“No, you weren’t.””
I watched them.
Two people who had spent years hiding the same secret.
Two people who clearly hated each other.
But also knew each other better than anyone.
“What happened the night Rachel disappeared?””
Thomas looked at me.
“I found out she had the file.””
“And?””
“I tried to get it back.””
“Did you hurt her?””
His face changed immediately.
“No.””
The answer was instant.
Too instant to fake.
“I would never hurt Rachel.””
“Then why did she run?””
Thomas looked toward the window.
“Because she realized the danger wasn’t me anymore.””
I felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Aaron did.
“It means Thomas wasn’t the only person involved.””
I turned.
“Aaron.””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I need to tell you something.””
My stomach tightened.
Every time someone said that, my life got worse.
“What?””
Aaron took a breath.
“When Rachel disappeared, there was another person at the scene.””
“Who?””
He looked at Marlene.
Marlene closed her eyes.
“No.””
I stared at her.
“You know.””
“I didn’t know everything.””
“Who was there?””
Aaron’s voice was quiet.
“Someone Rachel trusted.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Aaron hesitated.
Then said:
“Me.””
The room froze.
I stared at him.
“You?””
“I arrived after Rachel called.””
“You told me she called Marlene.””
“She did.””
“And you didn’t tell me she called you?””
“I was trying to protect the investigation.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You were hiding something.””
Aaron didn’t deny it.
“Yes.””
My anger exploded.
“How many lies have you told me?””
“Not many.””
I almost laughed.
“Not many?””
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
The irony was almost painful.
“Neither did I.””
Aaron looked down.
“I found Rachel that night.””
My entire body went still.
“What?””
Marlene looked shocked too.
“You never told me that.””
“I couldn’t.””
“Where was she?””
Aaron swallowed.
“At the lake house.””
My eyes moved around the room.
This house.
The place where everything began.
“She was here?””
“Yes.””
“Then where did she go?””
Aaron looked at Thomas.
And Thomas looked away.
That was the moment I understood.
Someone was still protecting a secret.
“What happened here?””
Nobody answered.
I grabbed the flash drive.
“I’m finding out.””
I walked toward the door.
Aaron stopped me.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“What?””
“If you open that file, there’s no going back.””
I looked at him.
“There hasn’t been a way back since my daughter screamed.””
I walked outside.
The others followed.
We moved to the car.
But before we could leave, Thomas spoke.
“Wait.””
I stopped.
He was holding something.
A small silver pendant.
Rachel’s pendant.
The one I had given her on our anniversary.
My breath caught.
“Where did you get that?””
Thomas looked at it.
“She left it for you.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because she knew you would eventually find the truth.””
He handed it to me.
My fingers closed around it.
Inside the pendant was a tiny compartment.
I had never known it opened.
Thomas watched as I twisted it.
A small piece of paper fell out.
Folded four times.
I opened it.
Three words.
Written by Rachel.
*Not Marlene.*
I looked up.
Confusion rushed through me.
“What?””
Thomas’s face changed.
“She knew you would suspect her mother.””
I read the note again.
*Not Marlene.*
Then beneath it, another sentence.
Smaller.
Almost hidden.
*Look at the one who came after me.*
My eyes slowly lifted.
Everyone went silent.
Because there was only one person who had come after Rachel disappeared.
One person who had entered my life every day.
One person who had helped investigate.
One person who had always been there.
I looked at Aaron.
His face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
And that was when I realized something.
The person closest to me was not the person I had suspected.
It was the person I trusted.
The person who had been helping me search for Rachel.
The person who had known exactly what evidence existed.
Aaron took one step backward.
“Daniel.””
I didn’t answer.
My hand moved toward my phone.
He noticed.
And for the first time since I met him…
Detective Aaron Cole looked afraid of me.
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“You listen.””
The lake wind moved through the trees behind us.
Thomas whispered:
“Rachel was right.””
I stared at Aaron.
“About what?””
Thomas looked at him.
“About the person who would find the evidence before anyone else.””
Aaron’s expression changed.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
He didn’t answer.
It rang again.
And again.
Finally, he looked at the screen.
His face went completely white.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s Rachel.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
May you like
Aaron looked at me.
“She’s calling from my phone.””
