Chapter 7: The Enemy Inside the Empire
Walter always said companies were not built with money.
They were built with people.
“The right people can build an empire,” he used to tell me.
“The wrong people can burn one down.””
I never understood how true those words were until now.
The next morning, Marcus and I walked into Walter’s company headquarters together.
For the first time in years, we entered through the same doors.
The employees noticed.
Whispers followed us.
Some looked surprised.
Some looked nervous.
The receptionist stood immediately.
“Mrs. Hale.””
I nodded.
“Good morning, Evelyn.””
Her eyes moved between me and Marcus.
“Mr. Hale.””
Marcus gave a small nod.
The last time he had been here, he thought he was walking into his inheritance.
Today, he was walking into a battlefield.
Daniel met us upstairs.
“The person involved is Adrian Cole.””
Marcus stopped.
“Adrian?””
I looked at him.
“You know him?””
“He was Dad’s financial advisor.””
Exactly.
The kind of person Walter trusted.
The kind of person who had access.
Daniel opened another file.
“Adrian handled internal reports for years.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Why would he help Thomas?””
“Because Thomas wasn’t the only one who wanted money.””
Daniel placed documents on the table.
“Adrian had debts.””
“How much?””
“Millions.””
The room went silent.
I stared at the paperwork.
“So they planned this together.””
“Yes.””
Marcus leaned against the desk.
“And Renata?””
Daniel looked at him.
“She was the connection.””
The realization hit him.
“She wasn’t just after the inheritance.””
“No.””
“She was part of a larger plan.””
Daniel nodded.
“They wanted control of the company before you ever knew it existed.””
I closed my eyes.
Walter.
Even after death, he had been right.
The danger wasn’t money.
The danger was people.
That afternoon, Adrian requested a meeting.
He walked into the conference room wearing an expensive suit and a confident smile.
A smile I had seen before.
From Renata.
From Thomas.
The smile of someone who believed they were smarter than everyone else.
“Margaret,” Adrian said.
I didn’t stand.
“Adrian.””
He glanced at Marcus.
“Interesting.””
Marcus crossed his arms.
“What is?””
“You finally told him.””
I watched Marcus’s expression change.
“You knew?””
Adrian smiled.
“Of course.””
“You knew about my father’s company?””
“Yes.””
“And you helped hide it?””
Adrian sat down.
“Your father made complicated choices.””
“No,” I said.
“He made careful choices.””
Adrian looked at me.
“You always were emotional.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don’t speak to her like that.””
Adrian laughed.
“There he is.””
“What?””
“The son finally defending the mother.””
His words were meant to hurt.
They didn’t.
Because Marcus didn’t move.
“I’m not the person you thought I was.””
Adrian’s smile disappeared slightly.
Good.
He noticed.
“You should be careful, Marcus.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
Adrian leaned back.
“It’s advice.””
I pushed a document toward him.
“You authorized the transfer request.””
His eyes flickered.
Only briefly.
But enough.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel placed another document down.
“Your signature.””
Adrian looked at it.
Then smiled.
“You think this proves anything?””
“Yes.””
“Then you’re all more naïve than I thought.””
He stood.
“This company belongs to whoever can control it.””
“No,” I said.
He stopped.
“It belongs to whoever protects it.””
For the first time, Adrian looked uncertain.
Because he realized something.
Walter’s greatest weapon was never money.
It was preparation.
After Adrian left, Marcus looked at me.
“What happens now?””
I looked out the window.
At the city Walter built his dreams in.
“Now we find out how far they were willing to go.””
That night, Daniel called again.
His voice sounded different.
Worried.
“Margaret.””
“What?””
“We found the final piece.””
I sat up.
“What piece?””
“The original agreement Walter created before his death.””
“And?””
“There was a hidden clause.””
My heart raced.
“What clause?””
Daniel took a breath.
“One that activates if anyone attempts to steal control of the company.””
I waited.
Then he said:
“Your son becomes the person who decides the future of the entire empire.””
I looked at Marcus sleeping in the guest room.
The son who thought he had lost everything.
The son who had hurt me.
The son who now held the power everyone wanted.
And I realized something.
May you like
The people who betrayed us had made one huge mistake.
They underestimated the boy Walter raised.
