Chapter 3: The Man Who Held the Secret
Marcus almost didn’t answer the call.
Almost.
But curiosity is powerful.
Especially when the truth you avoided your entire life suddenly appears in front of you.
Inside the chapel, Renata noticed his expression.
“What is it?””
Marcus looked up.
“Nothing.””
She smiled.
But I knew that smile.
It was the smile of someone measuring danger.
“Who was it?””
“My mother’s attorney.””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Why would your mother’s attorney contact you now?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because for the first time, he was asking himself the same question.
The man on the phone introduced himself.
“Marcus, my name is Daniel Whitmore. I represented your father for twenty years.””
Marcus stepped away from the guests.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because your father left instructions.””
“My father?””
“Yes.””
Daniel paused.
“And because today is the day your mother was supposed to be respected, not humiliated.””
Marcus looked toward the chapel doors.
The doors where I had stood.
The doors where he had rejected me.
His throat tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel continued.
“Your father knew you would eventually have access to the estate.””
“Estate?””
“Yes.””
Marcus laughed nervously.
“My father died with debt.””
“No.””
The word was simple.
Certain.
“No, Marcus. That was the story.””
He froze.
“What?””
“Your father wanted people to believe his company was struggling.””
“Why?””
“To see who cared about him and who cared about his money.””
Marcus looked around.
Everyone was waiting for him.
The wedding music was ready.
The guests were seated.
But suddenly none of it felt real.
“My mother knew?””
“Yes.””
“And she never told me?””
Daniel was quiet.
Then:
“She protected you.””
Those words hurt more than Marcus expected.
Because deep down, he knew they were true.
After the call ended, Marcus stood there holding his phone.
Renata approached.
“What did he say?””
Marcus looked at her.
For the first time, he didn’t see his future wife.
He saw someone who had been asking questions about his family’s wealth before asking questions about his family.
“He said my father wasn’t broke.””
Renata’s expression froze.
Then she recovered.
“Marcus, don’t let your mother manipulate you.””
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“She was at the chapel because she wanted to be there.””
Renata crossed her arms.
“She always makes everything about herself.””
Marcus stared at her.
A strange feeling moved through him.
A memory.
His mother sitting alone after Walter’s funeral.
His mother refusing expensive gifts because she said they weren’t necessary.
His mother working through grief.
And Renata…
Renata had never once asked how he was handling losing his father.
She had only asked what his father left behind.
“I need to talk to my mother,” Marcus said.
Renata grabbed his arm.
“Not now.””
He looked at her hand.
Then at her face.
“Why not?””
“Because everyone is waiting.””
“Everyone?””
Her voice sharpened.
“Marcus.””
That was the first time he heard irritation instead of affection.
“I said not now.””
Outside, I sat in my car watching the chapel.
I didn’t know what was happening inside.
I didn’t know if Marcus believed me.
But I knew one thing.
Truth has a way of finding its own door.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Is he listening?””
Daniel sighed.
“He’s confused.””
“That’s understandable.””
“He asked why you never told him.””
I looked at the chapel.
“Because his father wanted him to grow without the weight of wealth.””
“And now?””
“Now he needs to know.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he said:
“There’s something else.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“Renata wasn’t just interested in the inheritance.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?””
“She contacted someone six months ago.””
“Who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then he said the name.
A name I recognized immediately.
A name that explained everything.
Because Renata hadn’t entered Marcus’s life by accident.
She had been looking for my family long before Marcus ever met her.
