Amused

Chapter 5: The Truth She Tried to Bury

The front door felt like it was separating us from a storm.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open it.””

I had never heard fear in her voice like that before.

Not worry.

Not concern.

Fear.

Victoria knocked again.

“Emma, I know you’re inside.””

I looked through the window.

A black car was parked outside.

Two security guards stood near it.

She hadn’t come alone.

My mother whispered:

“She doesn’t know how to lose.””

I stepped away from the door.

“Then why come here?””

My mother looked at the old folder.

“Because she’s afraid.””

That surprised me.

“Afraid?””

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

My mother looked at me.

“Of the truth.””

The doorbell rang.

Victoria’s voice became sharper.

“Emma, I’m trying to be polite.””

I almost laughed.

Polite.

After threatening me.

After trying to hurt Lily.

After years of destroying people’s lives.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Adrian.

I opened it.

*Do not speak to Victoria alone. I’m coming.*

I showed my mother.

She looked relieved for half a second.

Then worried again.

“You shouldn’t trust him.””

“Why?””

“Because your father trusted people with money and power.””

“That doesn’t mean Adrian is like them.””

My mother looked at the door.

“You don’t know him.””

Maybe she was right.

But I knew one thing.

Adrian had walked toward a fight when everyone else walked away.

That mattered.

The door opened suddenly.

Not because we opened it.

Because Victoria’s guard had forced the lock.

My mother gasped.

Victoria stepped inside.

She looked around the house.

Almost disappointed.

“This is where you’ve been hiding?””

I stood in front of my mother.

“You broke into my house.””

Victoria smiled.

“You’re dramatic.””

“You threatened me.””

“I warned you.””

“Same thing.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You have no idea what you’ve stepped into.””

I looked at her.

“No. I think I finally do.””

That surprised her.

I held up the folder.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You shouldn’t have that.””

“So it’s real.””

Victoria stared at me.

“You’re just like your father.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“You knew him.””

She didn’t answer.

“You knew my father.””

Victoria walked closer.

“He was stubborn.””

“What happened to him?””

Her silence was the answer.

My hands curled into fists.

“You had something to do with it.””

Victoria laughed quietly.

“You really believe that?””

Before I could respond, another voice filled the room.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

Behind him were lawyers and police officers.

Victoria’s face went white.

Adrian looked at her.

“This ends today.””

Victoria recovered quickly.

“You think you can scare me?””

“No.””

He held up a file.

“But evidence can.””

She stared.

“What evidence?””

“The original records from your company.””

Victoria’s expression changed.

Adrian continued.

“Financial transfers. Emails. Signed agreements.””

“You’re bluffing.””

“No.””

He looked at Lily, who stood beside him.

“You made one mistake.””

Victoria said nothing.

“You underestimated the people you hurt.””

For the first time, Victoria looked powerless.

But then she smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

“Adrian.””

Everyone stopped.

“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””

The room became silent.

Adrian’s face tightened.

“What secret?””

Victoria looked directly at me.

And said:

“Ask Emma why her father really died.””

My heart stopped.

Everyone looked at me.

Then at my mother.

Because my mother was crying.

And I knew.

There was something she had never told me.

Something bigger than Victoria.

May you like

Something bigger than the gala.

Something that had been hidden my entire life.
