Chapter 2: The Man Who Saw Everything

The crowd moved before he even reached us.

That was when I realized this man wasn’t just wealthy.

He was important.

People who had ignored the entire situation suddenly stood straighter.

A businessman near the stage whispered, “That’s him.””

Another person replied, “No way.””

The man walked through the ballroom with calm confidence.

No panic.

No anger.

Just control.

He looked to be in his early forties. Dark hair. Sharp features. A black suit that probably cost more than everything I owned.

But what caught my attention wasn’t his money.

It was his eyes.

Because unlike everyone else, he didn’t look away when something uncomfortable happened.

He saw.

The woman in the wheelchair looked surprised when she noticed him approaching.

“Mr. Bennett?””

Victoria’s face changed.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

The man stopped beside me.

“Are you hurt?””

That was the first thing he asked.

Not, “What happened?””

Not, “Why did you cause a scene?””

Are you hurt?

I shook my head.

“I’m fine.””

His eyes dropped to the broken glass around my feet.

“You’re standing on shattered glass.””

“I didn’t notice.””

“That’s because you were busy protecting someone else.””

I didn’t know what to say.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Adrian, this is ridiculous. She attacked me.””

The man looked at her.

“Did she?””

Victoria immediately answered.

“She grabbed my wrist.””

“Why?””

“Because she misunderstood.””

The man glanced toward the woman in the wheelchair.

“Did she?””

The woman hesitated.

Victoria’s expression turned cold.

“Be careful what you say.””

I saw the woman’s fingers tighten around the wheels of her chair.

Fear.

Again.

That made something inside me angry.

The man noticed too.

“Your name?”” he asked her.

“Lily.””

“Lily, tell me what happened.””

Victoria interrupted.

“Adrian, this is a private family matter.””

His expression hardened.

“No. Someone being threatened in a room full of people is not a private matter.””

The ballroom went quiet.

I finally understood.

This man had power.

Real power.

Victoria took a step back.

“You’re embarrassing me.””

He looked at her.

“No. Your actions did that.””

A few people nearby looked shocked.

Nobody spoke to Victoria like that.

She looked at me with pure hatred.

“This isn’t over.””

Then she walked away.

I watched her disappear into the crowd.

Only then did I realize my hands were trembling.

Adrian turned back to me.

“Sit down.””

“I’m okay.””

“That wasn’t a suggestion.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“You always talk to strangers like that?””

“Only when they’re bleeding.””

I looked down.

A tiny piece of glass had cut my ankle.

I hadn’t felt it.

A hotel employee quickly arrived with a first-aid kit.

My manager, Daniel, appeared seconds later.

His face was pale.

“Emma.””

I knew that tone.

I was fired.

“Daniel, I can explain.””

He looked at Adrian.

Then at Lily.

Then back at me.

“You grabbed Victoria Ashford’s arm.””

“Yes.””

“You yelled at her.””

“Yes.””

“You caused a scene at the most expensive event we’ve hosted this year.””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

Daniel sighed.

“I should probably fire you.””

My stomach dropped.

Then Adrian spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel immediately straightened.

“Mr. Bennett, I—”

“She did the right thing.””

Daniel hesitated.

“She violated staff protocol.””

Adrian looked at the broken glass.

“Your protocol doesn’t include ignoring someone being attacked.””

Nobody answered.

My throat tightened.

I wasn’t used to people defending me.

Especially people like him.

Later, after my ankle was cleaned and the crowd returned to pretending nothing happened, I stood near the service hallway.

I wanted to disappear.

I wanted to go home.

Then Adrian appeared.

“You’re leaving?””

“Yes.””

“Without knowing who I am?””

I smiled slightly.

“I assume everyone here knows.””

“My name is Adrian Bennett.””

The name hit me.

Everyone knew Adrian Bennett.

Founder of Bennett Technologies.

Billionaire.

Investor.

One of the most influential men in the country.

I stared.

“You’re Adrian Bennett.””

“Yes.””

“And you were watching?””

His expression changed slightly.

“I was.””

“Why?””

He looked toward the ballroom.

“Because I recognized Lily.””

I frowned.

“Who is she?””

Before he could answer, a voice came from behind us.

“Adrian.””

We turned.

Lily was there.

Her face looked worried.

She held a small envelope in her hand.

“I think you need to see this.””

Adrian took it.

The moment he opened it, his expression changed.

The confident billionaire disappeared.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“What is this?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at the paper.

May you like

And quietly said:

“This proves Victoria Ashford has been lying for five years.””
