Amused

Chapter 5: The Battle for My Son Had Already Begun

"My mother hired an attorney.""

The thought repeated in my mind as I stared at the man standing beside her.

Daniel Harper.

Dark suit.

Leather folder.

Calm expression.

The kind of calm people had when they already believed they were winning.

My mother's confidence suddenly made sense.

The party.

The threats.

The video.

The strange message.

She hadn't been improvising.

She had been preparing.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Teresa smiled.

"Connor, this doesn't have to become ugly.""

I looked at her.

"You brought a lawyer to my house.""

She tilted her head.

"I brought someone to make sure everyone understands the truth.""

"The truth?""

My voice rose.

"You mean the truth where you threatened my wife?""

Daniel shifted slightly.

"Mr. Bradley, I think everyone would benefit from keeping emotions under control.""

I looked at him.

"Did my mother tell you she was humiliating my wife on my son's birthday?""

He didn't answer.

That silence told me enough.

My mother stepped forward.

"Don't exaggerate.""

I laughed.

"Exaggerate?""

I pointed toward the kitchen.

"My wife spent today sitting on a plastic stool surrounded by dirty dishes while twenty people ate food she prepared.""

Teresa sighed.

"You are making assumptions.""

"No.""

I looked at her.

"I'm finally seeing.""

Her face hardened.

For years, I had mistaken her confidence for wisdom.

Now I understood.

Confidence could also be cruelty.

Daniel opened his folder.

"Mr. Bradley, my client has concerns about the current family situation.""

I stared at him.

"Your client?""

He nodded.

"Mrs. Teresa Bradley.""

"She has concerns about my family?""

"Specifically regarding your child's welfare.""

My stomach tightened.

There it was.

The real reason he was here.

Frederick.

My son.

I stepped closer.

"What concerns?""

Daniel glanced at Teresa.

Then back at me.

"I think it would be better to discuss this privately.""

"No.""

My voice was firm.

"Say it here.""

My mother crossed her arms.

"Connor, don't make this dramatic.""

"You brought an attorney into my house. You don't get to tell me what's dramatic.""

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

But he continued.

"Mrs. Bradley believes there have been moments where Mrs. Amy Bradley's health issues may have affected her ability to provide consistent care for Frederick.""

The room went completely silent.

Amy looked like she had been slapped.

I turned slowly toward my mother.

"You are using her illness against her.""

Teresa shook her head.

"I'm trying to protect my grandson.""

"No.""

I stepped forward.

"You're trying to take control.""

Her expression changed.

For a second, I saw something underneath.

Not anger.

Fear.

Only a second.

Then it disappeared.

"I don't understand why you're attacking me.""

I stared at her.

"Because I finally understand what you've been doing.""

She looked at Amy.

"You see what happens when people twist things? Your wife has convinced you I'm the enemy.""

Amy's voice surprised everyone.

"No.""

It was quiet.

But strong.

Everyone looked at her.

Amy stood up.

Holding Frederick.

"I didn't convince him of anything.""

Teresa smiled.

"Really?""

Amy took a breath.

"No.""

She looked directly at my mother.

"I spent almost a year trying to convince myself you weren't doing what you were doing.""

The words hit harder than shouting.

My mother looked away.

Just briefly.

Amy continued.

"You made me feel like I wasn't good enough. You made me afraid to tell my husband the truth.""

Daniel looked between them.

"This seems like a personal disagreement.""

I turned toward him.

"No.""

I pointed at the papers in his hand.

"This became legal when my mother decided to involve an attorney because she wanted access to my son.""

Daniel remained professional.

"Mr. Bradley, grandparents have rights in certain circumstances.""

The sentence made my blood run cold.

Grandparents.

Rights.

I looked at Frederick.

My son had no idea what was happening around him.

He just reached toward Amy's necklace and smiled.

That small smile almost broke me.

Because all I could think about was how close I had come to losing control of my own family.

Not because someone attacked me.

Because I trusted the wrong person.

My mother stepped closer.

"Connor, you are making a mistake.""

I looked at her.

"Am I?""

"Yes.""

She lowered her voice.

"You are choosing your wife over your mother.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I'm choosing my family.""

Her eyes narrowed.

"Your family includes me.""

"Family doesn't mean you get to hurt people and call it love.""

The words hung in the air.

My mother's face went completely still.

Then she smiled.

A cold, disappointed smile.

"I see.""

She nodded slowly.

"Then I guess you leave me no choice.""

A strange feeling moved through me.

"What choice?""

She looked at Daniel.

He opened the folder.

"I was instructed to provide these documents if necessary.""

My heart sank.

"What documents?""

Daniel removed several pages.

He handed them to my mother.

She didn't look at them.

She already knew what they were.

"I hoped we wouldn't reach this point.""

My mother said it softly.

Like she was the victim.

Then she handed the papers to me.

I looked down.

The first page had my name.

The second page had Amy's.

The third page had a heading that made my hands go cold.

*Temporary Custody Concerns and Family Support Documentation*

I looked up.

"What is this?""

My mother sighed.

"Evidence.""

"Of what?""

She glanced at Amy.

"That things haven't been as perfect as you think.""

I flipped through the pages.

There were notes.

Dates.

Descriptions.

Claims.

Most of them were small things.

Amy missed a doctor's appointment.

Amy looked tired.

Amy forgot to respond to a message.

Normal things.

Human things.

Things every exhausted new mother experienced.

But written down, organized, and collected, they looked different.

Like evidence.

Like a case.

My mother had been building a story.

A story where Amy was the problem.

"This is insane.""

My mother shook her head.

"No, Connor. This is preparation.""

I looked at her.

"You've been collecting information about my wife?""

"About my grandson's safety.""

"No.""

I threw the papers onto the table.

"You've been collecting ammunition.""

For the first time, my mother's expression changed.

Anger.

Pure anger.

"You have no idea what it takes to protect a child.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Protect?""

I pointed toward Amy.

"From what?""

My mother looked at her.

"From instability.""

Amy went pale.

I moved in front of her.

"Stop.""

Teresa's voice became sharper.

"She has hidden medical problems.""

"Because you threatened her.""

"She has no income.""

"Because she takes care of our son.""

"She depends on you.""

"Because she's my wife.""

My mother stared at me.

Then she said something that froze the room.

"Ask her why she never told you she was planning to leave.""

I turned.

"What?""

Amy's face changed.

Not fear.

Pain.

"Connor...""

I looked at her.

"What is she talking about?""

My mother smiled.

"Tell him.""

Nobody spoke.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"Amy?""

She looked down.

"I wasn't planning to leave you.""

"Then what?""

She closed her eyes.

"Your mother is twisting something.""

My mother laughed.

"Am I?""

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out her phone.

Then tapped the screen.

"I have the message.""

My heart dropped.

"What message?""

My mother looked at Amy.

"The one where you told your sister you couldn't do this anymore.""

Amy froze.

I looked at my wife.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"Amy?""

Tears filled her eyes.

"I wrote that when I was scared.""

My mother stepped closer.

"But you wrote it.""

Amy's voice broke.

"Yes.""

I looked between them.

My head was spinning.

Because now I didn't know what to believe.

My mother had lied.

I knew that.

I had proof.

But Amy had hidden something too.

Something important.

Something painful.

Daniel quietly closed his folder.

"My recommendation is that everyone takes some time before making decisions.""

I barely heard him.

I was staring at my wife.

The woman I loved.

The woman I thought I knew completely.

"Amy.""

She wiped her tears.

"Connor, please let me explain.""

I wanted to say yes.

I wanted to hear everything.

But before I could answer, my phone buzzed.

Another message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

One photo.

And the moment I saw it, I forgot how to breathe.

The photo showed my mother and Amy together.

But the date on it was from six months earlier.

May you like

And underneath the picture was a message:

*"Your wife has been meeting your mother in secret longer than you know.""*
