Chapter 9: The Choice That Saved My Daughter

The woman’s name was Claire.

I didn’t know what to expect when we arrived at her house.

An angry stranger.

A broken woman.

Someone who hated my family.

Instead, I found someone who looked like she had been waiting years for this moment.

She opened the door.

Saw my face.

And immediately started crying.

“You’re Emma.””

I froze.

“How do you know me?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because your father talked about you every day.””

I looked at Cole.

Then back at her.

“You knew my father?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

She took a breath.

“I’m the mother of his first child.””

The words felt strange.

But somehow, not shocking anymore.

“My half-sibling?””

She nodded.

“He’s your brother.””

I stepped inside.

My entire life was becoming a story someone else wrote.

Claire made tea.

Then she sat across from us.

“Your father loved you.””

I looked down.

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

Her eyes filled.

“He chose you.””

“What?””

“When Richard threatened him, your father had a choice.””

I listened.

“He could expose everything and destroy your family.””

“Or?””

“Protect you.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at Cole.

“Your father discovered Richard was planning something.””

Cole went pale.

“What?””

“Richard wanted access to the family trust.””

The trust.

The one created for my father’s children.

Claire continued.

“He believed if Emma had a child, that child would inherit everything.””

I looked at my stomach.

My daughter.

“He was after my baby?””

Claire nodded.

“Not because of who she is.””

Her voice hardened.

“Because of what she represents.””

I felt sick.

Richard didn’t see my daughter as a child.

He saw her as an opportunity.

A key.

A possession.

“What happened to my father?””

Claire looked down.

“He confronted Richard.””

“And?””

“He never came home.””

The room went quiet.

My mother’s lie.

My father’s secret.

Everything finally connected.

“He didn’t die naturally.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

I covered my mouth.

Cole looked destroyed.

“My father…”

“Yes.””

Claire looked at him.

“Your father killed him.””

The next morning, police reopened the investigation.

For the first time in years, my father’s story was being heard.

But there was still one person missing.

Richard.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emma.””

My blood froze.

Richard.

“You have something that belongs to me.””

I gripped the phone.

“My daughter is not yours.””

A quiet laugh.

“She wouldn’t exist without my bloodline.””

I felt rage burn through me.

“You’re disgusting.””

“Your father said the same thing.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He begged me.””

The room went silent.

“What did you do?””

Richard laughed softly.

“Ask your mother.””

The call ended.

I turned toward Darla.

Her face had gone white.

“You knew.””

She started crying.

“Emma…”

“You knew he hurt Dad.””

“I knew he was dangerous.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You weren’t afraid.””

She looked at me.

“You were protecting yourself.””

She cried harder.

And maybe years ago, I would have hugged her.

Maybe I would have comforted her.

But I wasn’t that woman anymore.

I was a mother.

And my daughter needed someone who would protect her.

Then Cole stepped forward.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“I know I don’t deserve your trust.””

He swallowed.

“But I need you to believe one thing.””

“What?””

“I will spend the rest of my life proving that I’m not my father.””

I looked at him.

The man who lied.

The man who hurt me.

The man who also protected me in ways I didn’t understand.

Before I could answer, police officers rushed toward the house.

One of them held a file.

“Emma?””

I stood.

“Yes?””

The officer looked at me.

“We found Richard.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

The officer hesitated.

“He turned himself in.””

“Why?””

May you like

The officer looked at the file.

“Because he claims he has proof that your father was the one who betrayed everyone.””
