Chapter 6: The Test That Broke My World

I wish I could say I was prepared for the truth.

I wasn’t.

There are some moments in life that arrive like storms.

You hear the thunder first.

You see the sky darken.

You know something terrible is coming.

But nothing prepares you for the moment the lightning actually strikes.

I stood outside Lily’s house, staring at Cole.

“The baby?””

My voice barely came out.

He immediately shook his head.

“No. Emma, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Because my mind had already gone somewhere dark.

Somewhere I didn’t want to visit.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?””

His face twisted with pain.

“No.””

“Then say it clearly.””

He swallowed.

“I am not saying the baby isn’t mine.””

“Then why would you say there’s something about the baby you’re hiding?””

He looked down.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because Cole had always looked me in the eyes.

Even when he lied.

Even when he was caught.

But now?

Now he couldn’t.

“I need to explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps needing to explain.””

My hands moved protectively over my stomach.

My daughter shifted beneath my palm.

The tiny movement should have brought me comfort.

Instead, it reminded me how much was at stake.

“Tell me.””

Cole took a deep breath.

“Your mother found something in your father’s old documents.””

“What?””

“A medical report.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of medical report?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation nearly destroyed me.

“Cole.””

“It was about your father.””

I frowned.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What does that have to do with my baby?””

He looked toward the ground.

“Your father had a medical condition.””

I waited.

Nothing.

“Go on.””

“He couldn’t have children.””

The world went silent.

For a moment, there was no traffic.

No wind.

No sounds from the neighborhood.

Just those words.

My father couldn’t have children.

I felt my knees weaken.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“My father was my father.””

“Yes.””

“Then what are you saying?””

Cole stepped closer.

I moved away.

He stopped.

“I’m saying your mother has been carrying this secret for decades.””

My mouth went dry.

“No.””

“Emma…”

“No.””

I turned away.

Because I didn’t want to hear more.

I didn’t want another piece of my life taken from me.

First my husband.

Then my mother.

Now my father.

Everyone I loved was becoming a stranger.

“My mother said Dad betrayed her.””

Cole nodded.

“She did.””

“And she cheated.””

“Yes.””

“With someone who could have children.””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

The pieces were connecting.

Slowly.

Painfully.

“So my entire life…”

My voice cracked.

“My entire life was built on a lie?””

Cole looked devastated.

“I don’t know.””

I turned back.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“Because your mother found something else.””

“What?””

“She found a second letter.””

I froze.

“A second letter?””

“Yes.””

“From my father?””

He nodded.

“Where is it?””

“Your mother has it.””

I grabbed my phone.

My fingers shook as I called Darla.

She answered immediately.

“Emma?””

Her voice sounded terrified.

“You knew.””

Silence.

“You knew about Dad.””

“Emma…”

“You knew he might not be my biological father.””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than denial.

I pressed my hand against my forehead.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“You were afraid?””

“Yes.””

“You let me grow up believing something that might not be true.””

“I wanted to protect you.””

“Protect me from what?””

Her voice broke.

“From losing your father.””

I laughed bitterly.

“He was already gone.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She started crying.

“Because your father loved you.””

I looked at Cole.

Then away.

“But did he know?””

My mother became quiet.

That silence was louder than anything.

“Mom.””

“Yes.””

My heart stopped.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he stayed?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer came softly.

“Because he said being your father was never about blood.””

I sat down on the porch steps.

My anger disappeared for a second.

Not because I forgave her.

But because suddenly I remembered my father.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who held my hand when I was afraid.

The man who cried when I graduated.

Blood didn’t create those memories.

Love did.

But then another question appeared.

“If Dad knew…”

I looked at Cole.

“Why did you hide this from me?””

Silence.

Then my mother said:

“Because the person who caused all of this…”

Her voice trembled.

“Is still alive.””

I stood.

“What?””

“Emma, listen.””

“No.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

My mother whispered a name.

A name I knew.

May you like

A name that made everything worse.

“The man who raised Cole.””
