Chapter 8: The Voice From the Past
For five years, I had wondered what I would say if I ever heard his voice again.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined silence.
But I never imagined this.
Because the voice on the other end of the phone belonged to someone I had spent years believing was gone from my life forever.
“Claire.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
The entire room disappeared.
The guests.
The whispers.
The Montgomery family.
Everything faded until there was only that voice.
A voice I knew better than my own thoughts.
“Who is this?””
I already knew.
But some part of me needed him to say it.
A pause.
Then:
“It’s Michael.””
My heart stopped.
Michael.
Ethan’s younger brother.
The one person in the Montgomery family who had ever treated me like I belonged.
The one person who had called me after my divorce.
The one person who had promised he would explain everything.
And then vanished.
I couldn’t speak.
Ethan noticed immediately.
“Claire?””
I looked at him.
His face changed when he saw mine.
“What’s wrong?””
I turned away slightly.
“Where are you?””
The voice on the phone became quieter.
“Somewhere I should have never been sent.””
A chill moved through me.
“What does that mean?””
Before he answered, Eleanor spoke.
“Who is it?””
The moment she heard the name, her expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Fear.
Ethan saw it.
“Mother?””
She looked away.
And that was all the confirmation he needed.
I raised the phone again.
“Michael, everyone is here.””
Silence.
Then:
“Everyone?””
I looked around the room.
“Yes.””
Another pause.
“Then you finally know.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“Know what?””
Michael exhaled.
“The truth.””
I closed my eyes.
Five years.
Five years of unanswered questions.
And suddenly, the answers were arriving one by one.
“Tell me.””
The room became completely silent.
Even the people who had been pretending not to listen were watching me.
Michael’s voice lowered.
“The night Ethan signed the divorce papers, he wasn’t alone.””
My eyes moved to Ethan.
He looked confused.
“What?””
I held up my hand.
Not yet.
Michael continued.
“He thought you had already agreed to everything.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“He believed you wanted the divorce.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael ignored him.
“Someone showed him messages.””
My heart pounded.
“What messages?””
“Messages that appeared to come from you.””
The world tilted.
Because I remembered.
I remembered that week.
Ethan had become distant.
Cold.
I thought he was angry.
I thought he had already decided.
But maybe…
Maybe he had been reacting to something else.
“What did they say?””
Michael was quiet.
Then:
“That you regretted marrying him.””
The words hurt.
Even after five years.
Even though I knew they weren’t true.
Because they were the exact opposite of what I felt.
Ethan looked at me.
His face was pale.
“I never saw any messages.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He shook his head.
“I never received anything from you.””
Michael’s voice continued.
“Because they weren’t sent by Claire.””
Everyone froze.
I felt my hand begin to shake.
“Who sent them?””
No answer.
I already knew.
But I needed to hear it.
Finally, Michael said:
“Your mother.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Ethan turned toward Eleanor.
“No.””
It wasn’t anger.
It was disbelief.
A child refusing to accept what they already knew.
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Michael is lying.””
The phone went quiet.
Then Michael laughed softly.
A sad sound.
“She always says that.””
Eleanor stepped forward.
“Give me the phone.””
I pulled it away.
“No.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“Claire.””
“No.””
For the first time in five years, I said no to her without fear.
“You don’t get to control this conversation.””
Ethan stared at his mother.
“Did you fake messages?””
She looked at him.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“Did you?””
Her silence was enough.
He stepped back.
Like she had physically pushed him.
“Mason.””
My youngest son looked up.
“Yes, Mama?””
I immediately forced my expression to soften.
“Stay with your brothers.””
He nodded.
They moved closer together.
Three little boys.
Three lives created from a love that someone had tried to destroy.
Michael’s voice came through again.
“Claire, there’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course there was more.
There was always more with the Montgomery family.
“What?””
“The night you left, Ethan tried to find you.””
I looked at Ethan.
He froze.
“What?””
Michael continued.
“He went to your apartment.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t remember that.””
“Because your mother stopped you.””
The room went silent.
“She told you Claire had already left with someone else.””
My heart broke.
Not because I believed it.
Because I understood.
All those years.
All those assumptions.
All that pain.
Built on lies.
Ethan looked at Eleanor.
“Someone else?””
His voice was barely there.
“She told me that?””
Michael answered.
“Yes.””
Eleanor’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked exposed.
Ethan laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You let me believe that?””
She looked desperate now.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
His voice rose.
“You were controlling me.””
The guests watched silently.
No one dared interrupt.
Because this was no longer a scandal.
It was a family falling apart in real time.
Michael continued.
“There is one more thing.””
I almost didn’t want to ask.
But I did.
“What?””
“The night Claire left the city…”
A pause.
“She was followed.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Followed?””
Michael’s voice became serious.
“Someone wanted to know where she was going.””
I felt suddenly cold.
Five years ago, I thought leaving was my choice.
Now I wondered how much of my life had been shaped by people I never saw.
“Who followed me?””
Michael didn’t answer.
Then I heard something in the background.
A door.
A voice.
He lowered his voice.
“Claire, you need to listen carefully.””
I stepped away from everyone.
“Okay.””
“The person who followed you wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
“They were trying to protect you.””
The words confused me.
“Protect me from who?””
Michael hesitated.
And that hesitation terrified me.
“From someone who knew about the children.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Ethan moved closer.
“Claire?””
I ignored him.
“Michael, what are you saying?””
“I’m saying someone knew you were pregnant before the divorce was final.””
My eyes moved to Eleanor.
She looked away.
“And they weren’t the only ones.””
A horrible realization settled over me.
The Montgomery family had not been the only people hiding things.
“Who else knew?””
Michael whispered:
“Your father.””
My entire body went still.
My father.
A man I had not spoken about in years.
A man who had disappeared from my life long before Ethan.
A man I thought had nothing to do with the Montgomery family.
“That’s impossible.””
Michael’s voice softened.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My father had nothing to do with them.””
“He did.””
The room seemed to spin.
“How?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Because Claire…”
His voice cracked.
“He wasn’t trying to stay away from you.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“He was trying to keep you alive.””
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“What are you talking about?””
Before Michael could respond, another sound came through.
A sharp noise.
Like someone opening a door.
Then a man’s voice.
Not Michael.
Someone else.
“Who are you talking to?””
Michael went silent.
My stomach dropped.
“Michael?””
No answer.
Then I heard him whisper.
“Claire, don’t trust anyone who tells you they were protecting you.””
The line crackled.
“What?””
His voice became urgent.
“Not your father. Not Eleanor. Not even—”
The call cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Dead.
Everyone waited.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What happened?””
I looked up.
And I realized something terrifying.
The truth I had spent five years searching for wasn’t just about a broken marriage.
It wasn’t just about inheritance.
It wasn’t even just about my sons.
Someone had been moving pieces around long before I ever entered the Montgomery family.
Charles approached slowly.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His expression was grim.
“Your father.””
I felt my heart sink.
“What about him?””
Charles looked toward Eleanor.
Then toward the doors.
“He wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
The words made no sense.
“Wasn’t supposed to be?””
Charles nodded.
“Because according to William’s original plan…”
He stopped.
I waited.
“Your father was the one person who knew where the real documents were hidden.””
A chill ran through me.
“What documents?””
Charles looked at my sons.
Then at me.
“The documents proving why William Montgomery changed the inheritance.””
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly, the question wasn’t who wanted the Montgomery fortune.
The question was why William Montgomery had been afraid enough to hide it.
Then Ethan’s phone rang.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just turned the screen toward us.
An unknown number.
One message.
Three words.
*Ask your father.*
Ethan looked at me.
And for the first time, I realized something.

The Montgomery family secret wasn’t buried in their past.
It was buried in mine.
