Chapter 10: The Choice Between Truth and the Lie

Marcus looked at Naomi.

Everything around him became silent.

Not because the room was quiet.

Because his mind was trying to process too many impossible things at once.

Ethan was alive.

Ryan’s disappearance was connected to all of them.

Naomi had secrets.

Ethan had secrets.

Everyone had spent years hiding behind different versions of the truth.

And now all of them were standing in the same room.

Waiting.

Naomi looked at Marcus.

There was fear in her eyes.

But not the fear of being exposed.

The fear of losing him.

“Marcus…”

He wanted to answer.

But he didn’t know what to say.

Ethan smiled.

“You see?””

He looked around the room.

“This is what she does.””

Naomi turned toward him.

“Stop.””

Ethan ignored her.

“She lets people feel sorry for her.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“You’re the one who disappeared.””

Ethan’s smile faded slightly.

“And you’re the one who doesn’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I will.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“But first, everyone needs to stop pretending Naomi is innocent.””

Claire moved closer.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Your brother wasn’t innocent either.””

Claire’s face changed.

Marcus noticed.

There was something.

Something no one wanted to discuss.

“What happened to Ryan?”” Marcus asked.

Nobody spoke.

Then Naomi finally did.

“I’ll tell him.””

Ethan looked at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was stronger.

The same confidence Marcus had noticed when they first met.

But now he understood.

That confidence wasn’t arrogance.

It was survival.

Naomi looked at Marcus.

“Ryan wasn’t just Ethan’s friend.””

Marcus waited.

“He was my first love.””

The room became still.

“Before Ethan, before everything, there was Ryan.””

Marcus listened.

“He was kind. He believed in people. He believed in me.””

Her voice softened.

“Then Ethan came into our lives.””

Ethan laughed.

“Here we go.””

Naomi ignored him.

“At first, Ethan seemed like someone who wanted to help.””

“But?””

“But he wanted control.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

Naomi continued.

“He saw what Ryan was building. He saw his ideas. His work.””

Claire looked down.

“And he took everything.””

“Yes.””

Ethan shook his head.

“You always leave out the important part.””

Naomi looked at him.

“What important part?””

“The part where Ryan wanted revenge.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Ethan smiled.

“You know I’m right.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Naomi was silent.

Claire answered.

“Ryan confronted Ethan.””

“When?””

“Before he disappeared.””

Marcus looked at Naomi.

“And you were there?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Tell me what happened.””

Naomi closed her eyes.

“It was supposed to be a conversation.””

“But?””

“But Ethan brought someone else.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Naomi looked at Ethan.

“Him.””

The room changed.

Ethan didn’t deny it.

“You were always dramatic, Naomi.””

“You threatened him.””

“I warned him.””

“You threatened him.””

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“What happened next?””

Ethan smiled.

“You really want the whole story?””

“Yes.””

“Fine.””

He walked toward the center of the room.

“Ryan was going to destroy everything.””

“What everything?””

“My company.””

“Your company?””

Ethan laughed.

“See? Even now you choose words carefully.””

Marcus stared.

“You stole from him.””

“I built something bigger.””

“With his work.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Everyone takes from everyone.””

“No.””

Marcus’s voice was firm.

“Not everyone destroys people to get ahead.””

For the first time, Ethan looked at him with anger.

But only for a second.

Then he smiled.

“You sound like Naomi.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Where is Ryan?””

Silence.

That question changed Ethan’s face.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Naomi noticed.

So did Claire.

“You know,” Claire whispered.

Ethan didn’t answer.

“You know where he is.””

Ethan looked away.

Then Naomi said:

“Tell him.””

Ethan looked at her.

“You don’t get to order me.””

“No.””

Her voice became quiet.

“But you’re tired.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Naomi looked at him.

“Ethan disappeared because he wanted everyone searching for answers.””

She looked at Ethan.

“But he never expected someone to find the real answer.””

Marcus understood.

Ethan wasn’t hiding.

He was controlling the story.

Every accusation.

Every message.

Every person chasing the truth.

He had been moving everyone like pieces on a board.

“Where is Ryan?”” Marcus asked again.

Ethan said nothing.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

She answered.

Her face changed immediately.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?””

She slowly lowered the phone.

Marcus noticed her hands shaking.

“What happened?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Ryan is alive.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The impossible became real again.

Ethan closed his eyes.

Like he had known this moment would come.

“Where is he?”” Marcus asked.

Claire looked at Naomi.

“He’s been in protective custody.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why?””

Naomi answered.

“Because Ryan was the only person who could prove everything.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“And he finally decided to come back.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you let everyone think he was dead?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus felt something change.

All the manipulation.

All the lies.

Everything came back to one person.

Ethan.

Not Naomi.

Not Ryan.

Him.

A police siren sounded outside.

Ethan looked toward the window.

For the first time, he looked nervous.

Naomi stepped closer to Marcus.

“Are you okay?””

Marcus looked at her.

That question was strange.

After everything.

After all the secrets.

She was still worried about him.

“I don’t know.””

She nodded.

“That’s fair.””

A small smile appeared.

“You always say honest things.””

He almost smiled back.

Almost.

Then he looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””

Naomi’s eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That you would see the worst thing I ever did.””

“What did you do?””

She looked down.

“I chose to protect someone I loved, even when I knew they had done wrong.””

Marcus understood.

She wasn’t perfect.

She wasn’t a victim in every moment.

She had made choices.

Some good.

Some bad.

But she was human.

The police entered the building moments later.

Ethan didn’t fight.

He didn’t run.

He simply looked at Naomi.

“You think this makes you free?””

Naomi looked at him.

“No.””

“Then what?””

She took a breath.

“It makes me honest.””

Ethan was taken away.

And for the first time in years, the truth belonged to everyone.

Months later, Marcus stood outside the same coffee shop where he first met Naomi.

The same door.

The same sidewalk.

The same city.

Only everything felt different.

Naomi walked beside him.

“You’re thinking too much.””

Marcus smiled.

“You always know?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because you get quiet.””

He laughed.

“That’s your explanation?””

“It’s accurate.””

They reached the door.

Marcus opened it.

Naomi walked through.

Then she stopped.

Turned around.

And smiled.

Marcus laughed.

“What?””

“I was waiting.””

“For what?””

She looked at him.

“For you to ask for a thank you.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“No?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because now I know something.””

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“You were never looking for someone to open doors for you.””

Naomi raised an eyebrow.

“Then what was I looking for?””

He looked at her.

“Someone who understood you didn’t need one.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Naomi smiled.

“That was actually a good answer.””

“Actually?””

“Don’t get confident.””

He laughed.

Some things never changed.

But some things did.

The woman who once walked away saying, “I might,” was now standing beside him.

Not because he chased her.

Not because he saved her.

Because they chose each other after knowing the truth.

And Marcus finally understood something.

The hardest people to love are not always the ones with secrets.

Sometimes they are the ones who spent years believing their secrets were the only things keeping them alive.

And Naomi?

May you like

She had never needed someone to rescue her.

She only needed someone willing to stay long enough to know who she really was.
