Chapter 6: The Recording

At 4:42 p.m., Detective Harris asked Darius to come to the station.
He did not go alone.
Marcus drove him, and before they left, Darius called Nia to explain where he was going. He told her the police had received a recording and that Evelyn was claiming it showed Nia attacking her.
For a moment, there was no sound on the other end.
Then Nia whispered, "She has the video.""
"Apparently.""
"She said she'd use it.""
Darius gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.
"Do you remember what happened at 2:13?""
"I remember everything.""
Her voice was steadier now, but he could hear the fear beneath it.
"Tell me.""
Nia described the nursery again, more carefully this time. Evelyn had entered while Nia was changing Lila. Camille had stood near the door, holding her phone.
Evelyn had demanded that Nia sign the authorization form.
Nia had refused.
Evelyn had accused her of trying to isolate the twins from their family. When Nia tried to leave the room, Evelyn blocked the doorway.
Then Lila began crying.
Nia had reached for her daughter.
Evelyn grabbed Lila first.
Nia had tried to take her back.
And Evelyn had shoved her into the dresser.
"That's when I fell," Nia said.
"I put my hand out. Then she hit me.""
Darius swallowed.
"Did Camille see it?""
"Yes.""
"Did she try to stop her?""
Nia was quiet for a long time.
"No.""
He closed his eyes.
"Okay.""
"Darius?""
"I'm here.""
"If they show you that video, don't let them make you think you didn't see what you saw when you came home.""
He looked toward the hallway, where Marcus was waiting with the car keys.
"I won't.""
After the call, he sat in silence for several seconds.
Then he told Marcus everything Nia had said.
Marcus listened without interrupting.
When Darius finished, Marcus started the car.
"Then we make sure the police get the whole story.""
At the station, Detective Harris led Darius into a small interview room. A second investigator sat beside a computer, and a printed evidence log lay on the table.
"We've received a short video from an account associated with your sister," Detective Harris explained.
"We haven't established who created or transmitted it. We are treating it as evidence, not as proof of what happened.""
Darius nodded.
"Can I see it?""
"Yes. But I want you to understand that a short clip may not show everything that occurred before or after the recorded segment.""
The investigator opened the file.
The video began with a view of the nursery from above.
Nia stood beside the changing table, holding Lila against her chest. Her hair was loose, and she looked tired.
Evelyn stood near the door, holding a folder.
Camille was visible in the hallway.
The audio was clear.
"Sign the document," Evelyn said.
Nia shook her head.
"I told you I'm not signing anything.""
"You don't know what you're doing.""
"I know I don't want someone else making decisions about my children.""
Evelyn set the folder on the dresser.
"You're being unreasonable.""
"Please leave me alone.""
"You're not in a position to make demands.""
Nia turned toward the crib.
Lila began crying.
Evelyn stepped forward.
"Give her to me.""
"No.""
"Don't start this again.""
"I'm her mother.""
Evelyn reached for the baby.
Nia turned her body away.
Then Evelyn grabbed Lila's blanket.
The next few seconds were chaotic. Nia tried to move toward the crib. Evelyn pulled at the blanket. Camille appeared in the doorway, saying something the camera microphone did not fully capture.
Then Nia stumbled.
The clip abruptly cut off.
Darius stared at the screen.
"That's it?""
The investigator nodded.
"That's the file we received.""
"Where's the rest?""
"We don't know yet.""
Darius leaned forward.
"She fell because Mom shoved her. The recording cuts off before that.""
Detective Harris kept his expression neutral.
"That is consistent with what your wife reported, but we need to establish whether a longer recording exists and whether this clip has been edited.""
The investigator replayed the video.
This time, Darius watched Camille.
She had not rushed forward when Nia stumbled.
She had not called for help.
She had looked directly at the camera.
Then she had stepped backward into the hallway.
Darius felt a cold ache spread through his chest.
"Can you tell whether the video was edited?""
"We can examine the file's metadata and compare it with any original recording we recover," the investigator said.
"We cannot determine everything from this copy alone.""
Detective Harris closed the laptop.
"Your mother has offered a different account. She says your wife became aggressive and that she was attempting to prevent harm to the child.""
Darius's jaw tightened.
"She was taking Lila away from her mother.""
"That may be what happened. We need to corroborate the sequence.""
"Camille was there.""
"Your sister is a potential witness. We'll need her own account, independently obtained.""
Darius stared at the closed laptop.
"What happens now?""
"We continue the investigation. We also need to know whether your mother has other recordings or devices.""
Darius thought about the missing tablet.
"She has a tablet she uses to manage the monitor. Nia says she keeps it with her.""
"We'll pursue that through the appropriate process.""
Detective Harris paused.
"There's something else. Your mother has told us that the document she asked Nia to sign was voluntary and intended to provide temporary support.""
Darius gave a bitter laugh.
"She threatened to take the babies if Nia refused.""
"That's your wife's account. We will document it.""
The detective's tone remained calm, but his eyes had sharpened.
"We also have the photographs and the care-plan notes you reported. Those may help establish context, though we'll need to examine how they were created and what they actually demonstrate.""
Darius nodded.
He was beginning to understand that proving the truth would not happen in a single dramatic moment.
There would be interviews, records, timelines, and questions that hurt to answer.
His mother had spent weeks constructing a story.
He would have to help investigators uncover what actually happened.
When the interview ended, Detective Harris asked him to remain available for further questions.
Darius and Marcus left the station just after six.
The sky had darkened, and rain streaked the windshield.
Marcus drove in silence for several minutes.
Then he said, "How are you holding up?""
Darius looked out the window.
"I keep thinking about every time she asked me for help.""
"Your mother?""
"Nia.""
Marcus said nothing.
"She told me Mom was making her uncomfortable. She told me she felt watched. She told me she didn't like how Mom handled the babies.""
Darius rubbed his forehead.
"And every time, I found a reason to make it sound harmless.""
"You trusted your mother.""
"I used that as an excuse not to listen.""
Marcus glanced at him.
"You can't change what you did then. You can decide what you do now.""
Darius looked at his phone.
A message from Nia was waiting.
The babies are asleep. Please come home when you can.
He called her.
"How are you feeling?""
"Tired.""
"Any headache?""
"A little. The nurse said to monitor it.""
"Have you taken your medication?""
"Yes.""
He heard a small cry in the background.
"Lila?""
"Just waking up.""
"Do you want me to bring anything?""
There was a pause.
"Can you bring the blue blanket from our bedroom? The one with the little stars.""
Darius smiled sadly.
"I'll get it.""
"And Darius?""
"Yes?""
"Don't go to your mother's house.""
He looked at Marcus.
"I won't.""
When they arrived at Marcus's house, Nia was sitting in the guest room with Lila in her arms. Micah slept in the bassinet beside her.
Darius placed the blue blanket on the bed.
Nia touched the soft fabric with her fingertips.
"Thank you.""
He sat beside her.
"The video shows you refusing to sign the document. It shows your mother grabbing at Lila. Then it cuts off.""
Nia nodded.
"That's what I thought she'd do.""
"Why?""
"Because she told me the camera was there to protect her.""
Darius frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Nia looked toward the window.
"She said if I ever accused her of hurting me, she'd have footage of me being difficult. She said people would believe what they saw.""
He felt his stomach tighten.
"Did she ever tell you she was recording the audio?""
"No. But she talked to the camera all the time.""
Darius stared at her.
"What did she say?""
Nia took a breath.
"Sometimes she'd stand in the nursery and explain what she thought I was doing wrong. She'd say things like, 'A good mother wouldn't let her babies cry this long,' or, 'A responsible woman would accept help.''"
"Why would she talk to a camera?""
"Because she was building a case.""
The words settled between them.
Darius looked at his wife.
"Do you think she recorded herself hurting you?""
Nia's eyes filled.
"I don't know. But I heard her say something after I fell.""
"What?""
Nia swallowed.
"She told Camille to turn the camera off.""
Darius sat very still.
"Camille had control of the camera?""
"I think so.""
"Did you see her touch it?""
"No. But I heard her say, 'It's still recording.''"
He looked toward the bassinet.
Micah stirred, made a small sound, and settled again.
Darius felt anger rising, but beneath it was something else.
A growing certainty that the short clip was not the whole story.
His phone rang.
Detective Harris.
Darius answered immediately.
"We've obtained additional information," the detective said.
"Your sister has agreed to come in for an interview.""
Darius looked at Nia.
"Is she going to tell the truth?""
"That's what we're trying to determine.""
The detective paused.
"She has also told us that your mother asked her to delete a longer video after the incident.""
Darius felt his pulse quicken.
"Did she delete it?""
"She says she did not.""
Nia's hand flew to her mouth.
"Where is it?"" Darius asked.
"Your sister claims she saved a copy to a cloud account. We're working with her to preserve the material and verify its authenticity.""
For the first time that day, Darius felt a flicker of hope.
Then Detective Harris added, "There's a complication.""
"What?""
"The video may contain evidence of what happened before the assault. But your sister says it also contains a conversation between her and your mother that neither of them intended anyone else to hear.""
Darius waited.
"What conversation?""
The detective's voice lowered.
"Your sister says your mother admitted that the plan to remove Nia from the home began before the twins were born.""
Darius looked at Nia.
Her face had gone completely still.
Before either of them could speak, the detective continued.
"And she says the plan involved you, too.""
The call ended.
Darius lowered the phone.
Nia stared at him.
"What does that mean?""
He had no answer.
A few minutes later, a message arrived from Camille.
I'm going to tell them everything.
Then another.
But you need to know why Mom chose Nia.
Darius typed, Why?
The reply came almost immediately.
Because she found out about the money.
Darius frowned.
"What money?"" he whispered.
Nia looked at him.
"What is it?""
He turned the screen toward her.
She read Camille's message, then shook her head.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Darius thought about the papers in the kitchen, the document with Nia's name already typed into it, and the care-plan notes that had been carefully dated.
His mother had not simply wanted to control the twins.
She had been preparing for something.
And now, somewhere in a cloud account, there was a recording that might explain why.
His phone vibrated one more time.
Camille had sent a screenshot of a bank transfer.
The amount was $85,000.
The recipient's name was Evelyn Brooks.
The sender's name was Nia Brooks.
Darius stared at the image.
Then he looked at his wife.
"Nia," he whispered, "why did you send my mother eighty-five thousand dollars?""
Nia's face drained of color.
"I didn't.""
She looked at the screenshot again.
Then she shook her head, more firmly this time.
"I never sent her a dollar.""
Darius felt the room go cold.
Because if Nia hadn't sent the money, someone had used her identity.
And if his mother had received it, she might have had a reason to make sure Nia could never challenge her.

The question was no longer just what happened in the nursery.
It was what Evelyn Brooks had been trying to hide—and how far she was willing to go to keep it buried.
