Chapter 9: The Person Behind Rachel’s Plan
I stared at the photograph until my eyes began to hurt.
The image was simple.
A car.
A person sitting inside.
A shadow behind a windshield.
But somehow, that picture felt more terrifying than all the documents, all the lies, and all the secrets combined.
Because a document could be explained.
A mistake could be apologized for.
But watching someone from a distance?
Planning?
Waiting?
That was something else.
“Daniel?””
Marcus’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
Everyone was watching me.
“What happened?””
I handed him the phone.
He studied the picture.
Then his expression changed.
“Who is that?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
Ava stepped closer.
“Let me see.””
She looked at the photograph.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then her face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
She zoomed in.
“The car.””
I looked closer.
“What about it?””
“I’ve seen it before.””
My stomach tightened.
“Where?””
Ava looked at Rachel.
“Outside my foster home.””
The words hit hard.
Rachel’s face went pale.
“That’s impossible.””
Ava looked at her.
“Is it?””
Rachel looked away.
That was enough.
“You knew,” I said.
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why does she recognize the car?””
“I don’t know.””
The same answer.
Always.
I don’t know.
I don’t remember.
You misunderstood.
But this time, nobody believed her.
I walked toward Rachel.
“Who is helping you?””
She stayed silent.
“Rachel.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You think I’m some criminal?””
“I think you planned to take my daughter away.””
“That is not what I wanted.””
“Then what did you want?””
She looked at Lily.
And for a moment, I saw something complicated in her expression.
Regret.
Fear.
Maybe even sadness.
But none of it changed what happened.
“I wanted a family.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted a picture of a family.””
Her eyes moved back to me.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
I pointed toward the storage room.
“My daughter was locked away because she didn’t fit your picture.””
Rachel looked down.
And for the first time, she didn’t argue.
The silence was interrupted by a sound.
A car door closing.
Everyone turned.
Outside the venue, another person had arrived.
A man in a dark suit walked toward us.
He looked calm.
Too calm.
Rachel immediately stepped back.
I noticed.
“Who is that?””
She didn’t answer.
The man entered the hallway.
“Rachel.””
His voice was familiar to her.
Not like Ethan.
Different.
More professional.
More controlled.
Rachel whispered:
“Victor.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“You brought him?””
Rachel looked at him.
“I didn’t.””
The man stopped.
“Interesting.””
He looked around.
At the canceled wedding.
At the documents.
At the people standing around Rachel.
Then his eyes landed on me.
“You must be Daniel.””
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
He smiled slightly.
“Someone who can explain what’s happening.””
I didn’t trust him.
Not even a little.
“Try.””
He glanced at Rachel.
“You should have listened to me.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“You said it would be clean.””
My heart stopped.
There it was.
A confession hidden inside a sentence.
“What would be clean?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
Victor looked annoyed.
“Rachel.””
She looked frightened.
Not of me.
Of him.
That told me more than anything.
“You told me there would be no complications,” Rachel said.
Victor sighed.
“And there wouldn’t have been if you followed instructions.””
Instructions.
The word made my skin crawl.
I looked at Rachel.
“You weren’t doing this alone.””
She looked down.
Victor smiled.
“Now you understand.””
I stepped closer.
“What exactly did you help her do?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked at Lily.
That made my entire body tense.
“Don’t look at her.””
His eyes returned to me.
“Protective.””
“Yes.””
“Good.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
Victor adjusted his jacket.
“It means you’re exactly what Rachel described.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did she tell you about me?””
“That you were emotional.””
He paused.
“That you would react this way.””
I looked at Rachel.
She looked ashamed.
“Did you tell him I was unstable too?””
She whispered:
“Daniel…”
“Did you?””
No answer.
Victor stepped forward.
“Rachel made mistakes.””
Rachel looked at him.
“You’re blaming me?””
“I’m saying you became attached.””
Attached.
The word sounded cruel.
Like Lily was a problem.
Like caring was weakness.
Victor continued.
“The plan was simple.””
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Explain.””
“You marry Rachel.””
I stared at him.
“Then?””
“She gains legal access to your household.””
My stomach turned.
“Then the custody complaint moves forward.””
I looked at Rachel.
She closed her eyes.
“You were going to use marriage as a way in.””
Rachel whispered:
“I didn’t think it would happen like this.””
I almost couldn’t believe her.
“You didn’t think?””
Victor continued.
“The complaint was designed to question your ability as a parent.””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was holding Marcus’s hand.
Confused.
Scared.
But listening.
“Why?””
Victor shrugged.
“Because custody disputes are complicated.””
“That doesn’t answer why.””
He looked at Rachel.
“She believed Lily was preventing her from having the life she wanted.””
Rachel looked away.
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger anymore.
Something deeper.
Disappointment.
Because I had loved someone who saw my daughter as a barrier.
Victor reached into his briefcase.
He pulled out a folder.
“I assume you want proof.””
I didn’t move.
“Why would you help me now?””
He smiled.
“Because Rachel failed.””
Failed.
Like this was a business deal.
Like my family was a project.
I took the folder.
Inside were copies of messages.
Emails.
Payments.
Names.
The truth was there.
Rachel wasn’t just talking to Victor.
She had been paying him.
For reports.
For research.
For building a case.
I turned one page.
Then another.
And then I saw something that made my hands shake.
A message dated two weeks before the wedding.
From Rachel.
To Victor.
“After Daniel signs, Lily will no longer be my problem.””
I closed my eyes.
My daughter.
My little girl.
A problem.
That was the word Rachel used.
I handed the folder to Marcus.
I couldn’t look at it anymore.
Then I heard a small voice.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Lily was standing there.
“Are we still a family?””
That question hurt more than anything else.
Because she wasn’t asking about Rachel.
She wasn’t asking about the wedding.
She was asking if she still belonged.
I knelt down.
“Come here.””
She ran into my arms.
I held her tightly.
“You and me?””
I whispered.
“We’re always family.””
Her tears soaked my jacket.
“Even if people leave?””
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.””
Behind me, Rachel started crying.
But I didn’t turn around.
Not this time.
Because my daughter needed me more.
A few minutes later, police officers arrived after Mr. Collins reported the situation involving the documents and footage.
The venue became even quieter.
Guests slowly left.
The wedding that was supposed to begin with music ended with questions.
But as I walked outside with Lily, I thought it was finally over.
I thought the truth was enough.
I thought Rachel’s plan had collapsed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time, I almost ignored it.
But something made me answer.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know me.””
I looked at Lily.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m calling because Victor didn’t tell you everything.””
My grip tightened.
“What do you mean?””
The man’s voice became quieter.
“Rachel wasn’t trying to take Lily away because she wanted your marriage.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
The answer came slowly.
And it changed everything I thought I knew.
“Because Rachel discovered something about Lily’s past…”
I stopped walking.
“What?””
The man continued:
“Something even you don’t know.””
My heart started pounding.
“What are you talking about?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Daniel, Lily’s mother left behind a secret before she died.””
I looked at my daughter.
May you like
And for the first time that day…
I wondered if Rachel’s plan had started long before she entered our lives.
