Chapter 2: The Doctor Who Couldn't Look Me in the Eye
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Dr. Harris stood beside the staircase, clutching his leather folder with both hands.
His hair was thinner than I remembered. His face had aged, and his glasses sat crooked on the bridge of his nose.
But I recognized him.
I remembered the reassuring smile he used to give me before every appointment.
I remembered the way he explained blood test results.
I remembered sitting across from him while Daniel asked questions about my body as though I weren't in the room.
Now he was looking at me like a man who had spent four years waiting for an unavoidable confrontation.
"Claire," he said again.
Melissa stepped between us.
"Doctor, perhaps this isn't the best place.""
"I agree," he replied.
Daniel appeared at the end of the hallway.
"What are you two doing?""
Dr. Harris immediately closed the folder.
"Daniel.""
Daniel looked at the folder, then at me.
"Is there a problem?""
"No," I answered.
Daniel laughed.
"Good. Because today is supposed to be a happy occasion.""
He turned toward the doctor.
"Come on, Harris. People are waiting for the toast.""
The doctor didn't move.
"Daniel, I need to speak with Claire privately.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"About what?""
"Medical matters.""
"She's not your patient anymore.""
"That doesn't change what I need to discuss.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Actually, it does.""
For the first time, I saw something I had never noticed during our marriage.
Dr. Harris was afraid of him.
Not irritated.
Not uncomfortable.
Afraid.
I folded my arms.
"Whatever it is, you can tell me now.""
The doctor glanced at the people walking through the hallway.
"Not here.""
Daniel chuckled.
"Claire, don't encourage this. The man is probably confused.""
Dr. Harris turned sharply.
"I'm not confused.""
A silence fell between us.
Then he handed me a small white card.
"Please call me after the event.""
Daniel snatched the card before I could take it.
"What is this?""
"Give it back," I said.
He looked at the card.
Then his expression changed.
It was only for a second, but I saw it.
His jaw tightened.
His eyes flicked toward the doctor.
"Why are you giving her your private number?""
"Because she deserves an explanation.""
Daniel crumpled the card in his fist.
"She doesn't deserve anything from you.""
Melissa stepped forward.
"Daniel, stop.""
He turned toward her.
"Stay out of this, Melissa.""
"You're making a scene.""
"I'm hosting a party. I can decide what happens here.""
I reached for the crumpled card.
"Give it to me.""
He looked at me with a familiar expression.
The same expression he had worn during our last argument.
The expression that said he believed he could make me feel guilty simply by refusing to answer a question.
"You're still doing this, Claire?""
"Doing what?""
"Turning everything into a problem.""
I held his gaze.
"You invited me here to humiliate me. I'm simply trying to understand why your doctor looks like he's about to confess to a crime.""
His face went cold.
"Watch your mouth.""
Before he could say anything else, Vanessa appeared.
"Daniel, the photographer needs us.""
He turned toward her.
"Then tell him to wait.""
Vanessa looked at the crumpled card in his hand.
"What is that?""
"Nothing.""
She looked at me.
"Did he take something from you?""
I nodded.
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Daniel, give it back.""
He stared at her.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then Daniel tossed the card onto a nearby table.
"Fine. Have your little reunion.""
He walked away.
Vanessa watched him disappear into the dining room.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
I picked up the card.
"Why are you apologizing?""
She looked toward the garden.
"Because I think I know why he invited you.""
I waited.
She rubbed her thumb over the edge of her wedding ring.
"Daniel told me you were emotionally unstable after the divorce. He said you couldn't accept that he had moved on.""
"That's not true.""
"I know that now.""
"How?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because I found your medical records.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Where?""
"In his study. Inside a locked cabinet.""
She looked at me carefully.
"There were reports from your fertility clinic. Blood tests. Medication records.
Letters from Dr. Harris.""
I stepped closer.
"Did you read them?""
"Some of them.""
"What did they say?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"That's what I can't understand. They didn't say what Daniel told me.""
My fingers tightened around the card.
"What did he tell you?""
"That you had been diagnosed with severe infertility. That the doctors had warned you that pregnancy was almost impossible.""
I shook my head.
"That wasn't my diagnosis.""
"I know.""
"Then what did you find?""
Before she could answer, Daniel's voice came from the garden.
"Vanessa! We're starting!""
She flinched.
Then she leaned toward me.
"There's something else. A photograph.""
"What photograph?""
"Of two children.""
My heart began pounding.
"Twins?""
She nodded.
"A boy and a girl.""
I stared at her.
"How old?""
"About four.""
Four years.
The same amount of time since our divorce.
"Where did you see them?""
"In the same folder.""
I could barely breathe.
"Vanessa, what do those children have to do with me?""
She opened her mouth.
Then Daniel appeared behind her.
"Sweetheart, why are you whispering?""
Vanessa stepped away.
"Nothing.""
Daniel smiled, but his eyes were hard.
"Good. Because everyone is waiting for you.""
He placed a hand against her back and guided her toward the garden.
I watched them leave.
Melissa appeared beside me.
"Claire.""
I turned.
"Did you know about the children?""
She nodded slowly.
"Not everything.""
"What does that mean?""
Melissa looked down at her hands.
"Four years ago, shortly before your divorce, Daniel asked my mother to keep something from you.""
"What?""
"An envelope.""
I felt a cold sensation travel down my spine.
"What was inside?""
"I don't know. But I saw the return address.""
"Whose?""
She took a breath.
"An adoption agency.""
I stared at her.
Daniel and I had discussed adoption countless times.
We had even attended an information session.
But Daniel had insisted he wasn't ready.
He said he wanted to exhaust every medical option first.
I had accepted that.
I had believed we were making the decision together.
"Why would there be an adoption envelope?""
Melissa looked toward the garden.
"Because I think Daniel had already started the process.""
I couldn't understand.
"Without telling me?""
"That's what I suspect.""
My throat tightened.
"Why?""
"I don't know, Claire.""
The sound of a microphone echoed through the garden.
Daniel was preparing his speech.
I walked toward the glass doors, needing air.
The guests had gathered around a long table. Vanessa stood beside Daniel, one hand resting on her stomach.
He lifted his glass.
"Thank you all for coming. Today is a very special day for Vanessa and me.""
Applause followed.
Daniel continued.
"When I met Vanessa, I finally understood what a real partnership looked like. Someone who shared my dreams. Someone who believed in building a family.""
A few guests smiled.
I remained near the doorway.
Daniel glanced in my direction.
"And sometimes, life takes you through difficult chapters. Sometimes you spend years trying to make something work, only to discover that the future you deserve is waiting somewhere else.""
The guests laughed politely.
My face burned.
He was doing it.
Right in front of everyone.
"Four years ago," Daniel continued, "I made one of the hardest decisions of my life. I walked away from a marriage that could never give me what I wanted most.""
The garden fell silent.
I watched Melissa's face.
She looked furious.
Daniel raised his glass.
"But look at us now.""
He turned toward Vanessa.
"We're finally becoming parents.""
The applause began.
Then a small voice interrupted him.
"Daddy?""
Everyone turned.
A little girl stood near the garden entrance.
She wore a pale yellow dress and held the hand of a boy about the same age.
Both children had dark brown hair.
The little girl wore a silver bracelet.
My heart stopped.
I recognized that bracelet.
It had been part of a matching pair I had purchased years ago, when Daniel and I were discussing names for our future children.
I had never given it to anyone.
The girl looked directly at me.
Then she let go of the boy's hand.
She ran across the garden.
"Mommy?""
The word came out so softly that I almost thought I had imagined it.
But she said it again.
"Mommy Claire?""
My knees weakened.
May you like
Daniel dropped his champagne glass.
And suddenly, every person in the garden was staring at me.
