Amused

Chapter 1: The Invitation I Should Have Burned

“No,” I said.

Then I looked at the photograph of Daniel Whitmore’s pregnant wife again, and something inside me changed.

Four years ago, my ex-husband had walked away from our marriage because he believed I could never give him a child. Now he was inviting me to celebrate the pregnancy of the woman who had replaced me.

But the invitation wasn't the strangest part.

The strangest part was the anonymous message telling me not to leave until I met the children.

I had spent four years learning how to live without Daniel.

I wasn't going to let him decide when that lesson was over.

Saturday morning arrived with a gray sky and the smell of rain.

I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, holding two dresses against my body.

The first was black, simple, and elegant.

The second was a deep blue wrap dress I had purchased after my divorce, when I decided I wanted to stop dressing like someone who was constantly apologizing for taking up space.

I chose the blue one.

Not because I wanted Daniel to think I looked beautiful.

Because I did.

I curled my shoulder-length brown hair, applied a little makeup, and slipped on the pearl earrings my mother had given me before she died.

Then I checked my phone.

No new messages from the unknown number.

I had spent most of Friday trying to identify the sender. I called Melissa, searched through old contacts, and even checked the number online.

Nothing.

At 12:30, I was about to leave when my phone rang.

Melissa.

"Claire, please tell me you're still home.""

"I'm getting ready to leave.""

"Then sit down for a minute.""

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"What happened?""

"I just spoke to Vanessa.""

That caught my attention.

"Why?""

"She called me crying.""

I stopped fastening my bracelet.

"About what?""

Melissa hesitated.

"Daniel.""

I let out a humorless laugh.

"That's a fairly broad category.""

"Claire, I'm serious. She asked me whether you were coming today.""

"Why would she care?""

"Because apparently Daniel has been telling people that you asked to attend.""

I frowned.

"I never asked him for anything.""

"I know. But he told his business partners that you were desperate to see his new family.""

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Daniel had always been good at rewriting reality.

When he forgot our anniversary, he said I was too demanding.

When he missed my medical appointments, he said I was emotionally exhausting.

When he announced he wanted a divorce, he told his family that I had become obsessed with getting pregnant.

Now he was apparently telling people I was desperate to attend his wife's baby shower.

"What else did Vanessa say?"" I asked.

Melissa lowered her voice.

"She said Daniel has prepared something for you.""

My stomach tightened.

"What kind of something?""

"She doesn't know. But she found a folder in his study. Your name was on it.""

I looked at the clock.

"Did she open it?""

"She said there were medical documents inside.""

The kitchen suddenly seemed colder.

"Medical documents?""

"Claire, I think you need to know something. Daniel has been talking to Dr. Harris again.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why?""

"I don't know.""

"Melissa, that doctor treated us four years ago. He has no reason to be involved in Daniel's current pregnancy.""

"Exactly.""

I looked at the invitation lying beside my keys.

The handwritten message seemed almost childish now.

COME AND SEE WHAT YOU COULD NEVER GIVE ME.

Daniel had wanted me to feel small.

He had wanted me to arrive already defeated.

Instead, I felt an unfamiliar determination settling in my chest.

"I'm still going," I said.

Melissa sighed.

"Then promise me something.""

"What?""

"Don't let him get you alone.""

"I promise.""

"And Claire?""

"Yes?""

"If you see a little girl with a silver bracelet, please don't ignore her.""

My hand froze.

"What little girl?""

Melissa went silent.

"Melissa?""

"I shouldn't have said that.""

"Who is she?""

"I'll explain when you get here.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless for several seconds.

A little girl.

A silver bracelet.

Children.

I looked down at my own wrist, where a thin silver chain rested against my skin.

Then I picked up my handbag and left.

The Whitmore Estate sat behind tall iron gates in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods outside Boston.

I hadn't visited since the divorce.

Daniel had purchased the property during our sixth year of marriage. Back then, he had talked about turning the unused upstairs bedrooms into nurseries.

He had even shown me a sketch of a white wooden crib.

I remembered standing beside him in the empty room, imagining tiny footsteps on the hardwood floor.

Now, four years later, the same house was decorated with blue balloons.

A large white banner stretched across the entrance.

WELCOME, LITTLE WHITMORE!

I parked behind a row of expensive SUVs.

As I stepped out, I heard laughter coming from the garden.

A woman in a pink dress approached me.

"Claire?""

I recognized her immediately.

Samantha, Daniel's cousin.

Her smile faltered.

"Oh. You actually came.""

"Apparently, I was invited.""

She glanced at the envelope in my hand.

"Well, I hope you have a good time.""

There was an uncomfortable pause.

Then she leaned closer.

"Just be careful today.""

"Everyone seems very concerned about my safety.""

Samantha looked toward the house.

"Daniel has been drinking since noon.""

Before I could ask anything else, the front doors opened.

And there he was.

Daniel Whitmore.

Tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a navy suit and a pale blue tie. His hair had turned slightly gray at the temples, but his smile was exactly the same.

The smile he used when he wanted everyone in the room to believe he was the most reasonable man alive.

"Well, well.""

He walked toward me with a champagne glass in his hand.

"Look who decided to show up.""

"Hello, Daniel.""

He looked me up and down.

"Nice dress.""

"Thank you.""

"I wasn't sure you'd come.""

"You sent the invitation.""

He laughed.

"Yes. I suppose I did.""

His eyes moved to the envelope in my hand.

"Did you enjoy my little message?""

I stared at him.

"You wrote it yourself?""

"Of course.""

"Why?""

He raised his glass.

"Because some people need reminders that life moves on.""

I glanced at the banner behind him.

"Congratulations on the baby.""

His smile widened.

"Thank you. Vanessa and I are very blessed.""

He said the word very slowly.

Then he leaned closer.

"Something you never got to experience.""

I felt the old familiar ache.

But this time, I didn't lower my eyes.

"Daniel, I'm not here to compete with your wife.""

"Good. You'd lose.""

A voice interrupted us.

"Daniel.""

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

She was beautiful, but she looked tired. Her blonde hair was pulled into a loose bun, and one hand rested protectively against her pregnant stomach.

She looked at me.

"Claire. Thank you for coming.""

Her voice was gentle.

"Congratulations, Vanessa.""

"Thank you.""

Daniel placed his hand on her shoulder.

"Come on, sweetheart. Let's get everyone inside.""

Vanessa didn't move.

Instead, she looked directly at me.

"Could I speak to you later?""

Daniel's fingers tightened around her shoulder.

"Vanessa, we've discussed this.""

She looked down.

"Yes. I know.""

I noticed the movement.

The fear.

It was small, almost invisible.

But I recognized it.

I had once looked at Daniel the same way.

The party was already crowded.

There were flower arrangements on every table, a large cake decorated with tiny blue shoes, and a professional photographer taking pictures near the garden fountain.

People greeted me politely.

Some looked uncomfortable.

Others looked curious.

I heard whispers.

"That's Claire.""

"His first wife.""

"Didn't they divorce because she couldn't have children?""

I kept walking.

Near the dining room, I found Melissa standing beside a table of gifts.

She hurried toward me.

"Thank God.""

"What's happening?""

"Not here.""

She took my hand and led me toward the hallway.

"Claire, I need you to understand something. Daniel has been lying about the fertility treatments.""

My heartbeat quickened.

"What kind of lie?""

Melissa looked toward the garden.

Then she whispered the words that made the room seem to tilt around me.

"He didn't leave you because you couldn't have children.""

I stared at her.

"Then why did he?""

Before she could answer, someone called my name from behind us.

"Claire Bennett?""

An older man stood near the staircase.

Dr. Harris.

The same fertility specialist who had treated us for years.

He was holding a brown leather folder.

May you like

And he looked absolutely terrified.

"There's something I need to show you," he said.
