Chapter 3: The Woman From His Past
The woman stopped a few feet away from me.
For a moment, I couldn't move.
Not because I was afraid of her.
Because I was afraid of what she was about to say.
Her name was Claire Reynolds.
I remembered her.
Not because we were close.
Because Marcus had mentioned her several times during our relationship.
"Just an old coworker.""
"Someone who used to be on my team.""
"Nothing important.""
Those were his exact words.
I had believed him because I had no reason not to.
Until now.
Claire looked at Marcus.
There was something painful in her expression.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Regret.
"I'm sorry," she said again.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"Claire, don't.""
Her eyes moved to him.
For the first time that night, someone looked at Marcus without being impressed by him.
Without being afraid of disappointing him.
Without trying to protect his image.
"You had years to tell the truth," Claire said quietly.
"You don't get to decide when everyone else stays silent.""
Marcus's face hardened.
"This is not your business.""
Claire looked at me.
"Actually, it became my business the moment he used my name.""
My stomach tightened.
"Used your name for what?""
Claire held out the document.
"I found this three months ago.""
I took it.
The paper shook slightly in my hand.
It was a copy of an application.
At the top was Marcus's name.
But the section below made my blood run cold.
*Proposed Joint Financial Partnership.*
I scanned the page.
My father's company name appeared.
But it wasn't connected to my father.
It was listed as a potential future asset.
A future asset.
Not a person.
Not a family.
An asset.
"What is this?"" I asked.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Valeria, listen.""
I looked up.
"Why is my family's company on this document?""
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
That was becoming his pattern.
Silence when honesty was required.
Explanations only when he was caught.
Claire answered.
"Because Marcus believed marrying you would give him access to certain investment circles.""
The ballroom seemed to tilt.
I stared at her.
"You knew about this?""
Claire looked down.
"I knew part of it.""
"Part?""
She swallowed.
"When Marcus and I worked together, he often talked about his future.""
A bitter smile crossed her face.
"He called it his 'five-year plan.''"
I looked at Marcus.
"What five-year plan?""
He shook his head.
"Don't listen to her.""
Claire continued.
"He wanted a promotion. More money. More influence. He always talked about moving into a higher social circle.""
She looked at the folder in my hands.
"Then he met you.""
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
I could hear the soft music still playing from the band.
A romantic song.
The kind couples were supposed to dance to.
The kind I was supposed to be dancing with my husband.
Instead, I was standing in the middle of my wedding reception discovering that the man I loved had been building a business strategy around my existence.
"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked Claire.
Her eyes filled with guilt.
"Because I thought I was wrong.""
She looked at Marcus.
"I thought maybe I was just angry because things ended badly between us.""
My heart stopped.
"Things ended badly?""
Marcus immediately interrupted.
"That was years ago.""
Claire laughed softly.
Not happily.
"Years ago?""
She looked at me.
"Marcus and I dated for almost a year.""
The room went completely silent.
I turned slowly toward Marcus.
He looked terrified.
"Valeria—"
"You told me you barely knew her.""
"I didn't think it mattered.""
I felt something break inside me.
Not because he had a past.
Everyone had a past.
Because he had rewritten his past whenever it was convenient.
"You didn't think it mattered that you dated your coworker?""
"It was over before I met you.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
Marcus looked frustrated.
"You are twisting everything.""
My father stepped forward.
"Be careful.""
The calmness in his voice was more intimidating than anger.
Marcus looked at him.
Arthur Bennett had always been gentle with me.
But he had also built an entire career by recognizing dishonesty.
"You are standing in front of my daughter," my father said, "after allowing your family to demand control over her life, while documents show you were planning to benefit from her family's resources.""
He paused.
"And now you want to accuse everyone else of twisting the truth?""
Marcus said nothing.
Beatrice suddenly walked toward Claire.
"This is ridiculous.""
Claire looked at her.
"Mrs. Caldwell.""
"You are a bitter woman from his past.""
Claire's expression changed.
"I expected you to say that.""
Beatrice frowned.
"Excuse me?""
Claire pulled out her phone.
"I recorded my last conversation with Marcus.""
Marcus's eyes widened.
"No.""
Claire looked at him.
"You told me nobody would believe me.""
She pressed a button.
A voice filled the ballroom.
Marcus's voice.
Clear.
Calm.
Confident.
"Once I marry Valeria, things will change. Her father has connections I can use. She doesn't understand how valuable that family is.""
My entire body went cold.
The recording continued.
"My mother knows how to handle her. Women like Valeria think independence means they can control everything. After marriage, she will understand how things work.""
A few guests gasped.
Someone whispered, "Oh my God.""
I closed my eyes.
For a second, I wasn't in the ballroom anymore.
I was remembering every moment I had defended him.
Every time I ignored my instincts.
Every time I thought love meant giving someone more chances.
The recording stopped.
Nobody looked at Marcus the same way.
Not even Beatrice.
She looked angry.
But not at her son.
At the situation.
At the fact that the truth had escaped her control.
Marcus moved toward me.
"Valeria, please let me explain.""
I stepped back.
"Explain what?""
He stopped.
"That you didn't mean it?""
I shook my head.
"That you were just saying those things but didn't believe them?""
He looked desperate.
"Yes.""
I nodded slowly.
"That's worse.""
His face changed.
"What?""
"Because if you believed it, you were cruel.""
I looked at him.
"But if you didn't believe it and still said it, then you were pretending to love me while planning to use me.""
He had no answer.
For once.
No excuse.
No explanation.
No "don't take it personally.""
Just silence.
The wedding planner appeared near the edge of the crowd, looking terrified.
"Mr. Bennett?""
My father turned.
"The guests are asking what they should do.""
I almost smiled.
A few hours earlier, that question would have destroyed me.
The embarrassment.
The gossip.
The humiliation.
But now?
I looked around.
At the flowers.
The decorations.
The expensive dress.
The people who had come to watch me start a marriage.
And I realized none of those things mattered.
A wedding could be canceled.
A party could end.
Money could be replaced.
But trust?
Once broken, it didn't come back because someone apologized.
I walked back to the table.
The ring was still sitting there.
Exactly where I left it.
I picked it up.
Marcus watched me.
For a moment, hope appeared in his eyes.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
Then I placed the ring into his hand.
"This belongs to you.""
His fingers closed around it.
"Valeria...""
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
But firm.
"I don't want my freedom back after marriage.""
He stared at me.
"I want to keep the freedom I had before I met you.""
The words landed harder than shouting ever could.
Beatrice looked away.
Marcus looked broken.
And for the first time that night, I saw the truth.
He wasn't devastated because he lost me.
He was devastated because he lost what he thought he would gain from me.
I turned toward my father.
"Can we leave?""
He nodded immediately.
"Of course.""
As we walked toward the exit, whispers followed us.
But I didn't care anymore.
Outside the ballroom doors, the cold Chicago air touched my face.
I breathed in.
For the first time all night, I felt like I could breathe.
Then my phone vibrated.
One message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
And my blood froze.
The message contained a photo.
A photo of Marcus meeting someone in secret.
Taken just two days before our wedding.
May you like
Underneath it were seven words:
*"You still don't know the worst part.""*
