Amused

Chapter 7: Vanessa’s Confession

I almost deleted the message.

Almost.

Because every instinct told me meeting Vanessa Parker alone was a mistake.

But fifteen years of unanswered questions were stronger than my suspicion.

I met her at an old park near Westbridge High.

The same place where students used to gather after class.

The same place where Vanessa once told everyone I would never become anything.

She arrived ten minutes late.

Of course she did.

Some things never changed.

But this time, she didn’t look confident.

She looked tired.

“Ethan.””

I didn’t smile.

“Why am I here?””

She looked around.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I laughed quietly.

“From you?””

Her face tightened.

“I know what I did.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

The answer came immediately.

That surprised me.

Vanessa sat on a bench.

“My father raised me to believe people were either powerful or worthless.””

I remained standing.

“And you believed him.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“I was cruel because I thought cruelty meant strength.””

For the first time in fifteen years, she sounded human.

Not the queen of the school.

Not the woman who laughed at people.

Just someone carrying regret.

“I’m not here for an apology,” I said.

“I know.””

“Then why?””

She pulled a small envelope from her bag.

“I found this in my father’s office.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Your father’s final letter.””

My entire body went still.

“You have my father’s letter?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because my father kept everything.””

She looked at me.

“Especially evidence.””

I took the envelope.

My hands shook slightly.

“Why give it to me now?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because my father is coming back.””

The words hit me.

“What?””

“He wants the key.””

“What key?””

She looked at me.

“The one he believes your mother still has.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The first line made my heart stop.

“Ethan, my son.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father had written my name.

After all these years.

Vanessa watched me carefully.

“There’s something else.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She whispered:

“Your father didn’t disappear because he was running away.””

A pause.

“He disappeared because he was trying to protect you.””

I looked back at the letter.

Then at Vanessa.

“Why should I trust you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer caught me off guard.

She stood.

“But you should trust the evidence.””

She walked away.

I opened the letter.

And the first sentence destroyed everything I believed about my childhood.

“Ethan, if you ever meet Vanessa Parker, know this…”

I stopped reading.

May you like

Because the next words were impossible.

“Her father is not the man you should fear.””
