Amused

Chapter 8: The Brother Behind the Shadows

"My own brother.""

Walter’s words hung in the air.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

The room felt too quiet.

Too still.

"Your brother?""

Walter nodded slowly.

"His name was Thomas Madden.""

I stared at him.

"But I thought Richard was responsible.""

"Richard was responsible for many things.""

Walter’s voice became heavier.

"But he wasn't working alone.""

My fingers tightened around my father's letter.

The truth had become a maze.

Every answer created another question.

"Why didn't you tell me about him?""

Walter looked away.

"Because Thomas disappeared before I could prove anything.""

"Disappeared?""

"Yes.""

I stood.

"So let me understand this.""

My voice shook.

"My mother discovered Richard was stealing money.""

Walter nodded.

"Your brother was involved.""

Another nod.

"My father found out.""

"Yes.""

"And everyone disappeared.""

Walter looked at me.

"Except Richard.""

The anger inside me grew.

"How convenient.""

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

For twenty years, Richard Hale had continued living a normal life.

He had built a restaurant empire.

He had employees.

Money.

Power.

Meanwhile, my family was destroyed.

I looked at Walter.

"How much did you know?""

The question surprised him.

"What?""

"About my mother. About my father. About Thomas.""

Walter’s expression changed.

"You think I hid something.""

"I think everyone hid something.""

That hurt him.

I saw it.

But I couldn’t stop.

"I spent my entire life believing my parents were gone.""

My voice became quieter.

"I believed I was alone.""

Walter stepped closer.

"Emily—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I need to know why everyone decided I couldn't handle the truth.""

Walter didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer good enough.

Finally, he said:

"Because we were wrong.""

James brought up old records on the office screen.

Thomas Madden.

The name appeared beside years of company history.

"Thomas was Walter’s younger brother," James explained.

"He was responsible for early financial operations at Madden Global.""

I looked at Walter.

"You trusted him.""

"More than anyone.""

James continued.

"Thomas handled investments, contracts, and internal accounts.""

"And Richard?""

"Richard worked under him.""

I understood.

They weren’t random criminals.

They were people inside the company.

People with access.

People Walter trusted.

"My mother found out because she worked in accounting.""

Walter nodded.

"She noticed money disappearing through fake companies.""

"Did she know Thomas was involved?""

Walter looked at the journal.

"We don't know.""

I looked at the empty pages.

"But she suspected someone.""

"Yes.""

"Someone close.""

"Yes.""

A thought entered my mind.

"What happened to Thomas?""

James answered.

"We searched for him after the scandal began.""

"And?""

"Nothing.""

Walter looked at me.

"He vanished before Sarah disappeared.""

The timing made my stomach twist.

My father’s letter.

My mother’s journal.

Richard’s warning.

Everything pointed toward one thing.

There was a missing piece.

And everyone was afraid of finding it.

That afternoon, Walter took me somewhere I never expected.

Not a company office.

Not a restaurant.

A cemetery.

The rain had stopped, but the sky remained gray.

We stood in front of a small stone.

Sarah Carter.

My mother.

I had visited this place hundreds of times.

But I had never known how many secrets were buried with her.

Walter stood beside me.

"I came here every year.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because I owed her.""

I stared at the stone.

"What did you owe her?""

Walter was silent.

Then he said:

"The truth.""

A cold wind moved through the trees.

"I should have protected her.""

I looked at him.

"But you didn't.""

"No.""

His answer was immediate.

"I failed.""

For some reason, that honesty hurt more than a lie.

Because I could see he meant it.

He wasn’t trying to make himself the hero.

He was admitting he wasn’t.

"I hated you for a while.""

Walter looked at me.

The confession surprised him.

"I don't know why.""

I looked down.

"Maybe because you were the only person connected to my mother who was still alive.""

Walter nodded.

"I understand.""

"But then you helped me.""

"I wanted to.""

"Why?""

He looked at Sarah’s grave.

"Because I promised her.""

I frowned.

"What promise?""

Walter took something from his coat.

A small folded piece of paper.

Another note.

My mother’s handwriting.

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

*Walter,*

*If you are reading this, then I hope you found Emily.*

*Please remember this: Do not protect her from the truth. Protect her while she faces it.*

My eyes blurred.

That was my mother.

Even at the end, she wasn’t asking someone to hide the pain.

She was asking someone to help me survive it.

Walter watched me.

"She knew you would need answers.""

I folded the note carefully.

"She knew a lot.""

"Yes.""

"Then why didn't she tell me herself?""

Walter looked at the grave.

"Because she didn't get the chance.""

That evening, we returned to Madden Tower.

James was waiting.

His expression told me something was wrong.

"What happened?""

He looked at Walter.

"We found Thomas.""

The room went silent.

Walter stood immediately.

"Where?""

James hesitated.

"Before I answer, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"He's alive.""

My breath caught.

Alive.

Another person who was supposed to be gone.

Another lie.

"When?""

"We confirmed his identity two hours ago.""

"Where is he?""

James looked at me.

"He's been living under a different name.""

Walter’s face hardened.

"What name?""

James placed a file on the desk.

Walter opened it.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Something worse.

Recognition.

"What?""

I stepped closer.

"Who is he?""

Walter looked at me.

And slowly turned the file around.

The photograph attached to it made my blood run cold.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen him many times.

He had visited the restaurant.

He had spoken to employees.

He had given me advice.

He had told me he was proud of how I worked.

The man who had helped me after my father disappeared.

The man who had attended my graduation.

The man I thought was family.

My father's closest friend.

Robert Ellis.

My hands covered my mouth.

"No.""

Walter whispered:

"Thomas Madden became Robert Ellis.""

I stepped backward.

Impossible.

The man who had raised me.

The man who had comforted me after losing my parents.

The man who told me my father loved me.

All these years...

He had known.

He had been there.

Watching.

Waiting.

"Why?""

My voice barely came out.

Walter looked at the file.

"Because he wasn't hiding from you.""

A pause.

"He was hiding you.""

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

James opened another document.

"There's more.""

My eyes moved to the papers.

"What?""

James swallowed.

"The night your mother died...""

He stopped.

"Finish.""

James looked at Walter.

Then at me.

"The accident report was false.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"Your mother was not killed by a random crash.""

The room became cold.

James continued.

"The vehicle was found abandoned after someone removed the evidence.""

I stared at him.

"Then how did she die?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Walter said:

"Because someone wanted her silent.""

My hands shook.

"Who?""

James looked at the final page.

"We found the original police statement.""

He placed it in front of me.

There was a witness name.

A witness who had been ignored for twenty years.

I read it.

And everything inside me froze.

Because the witness had written:

*I saw Sarah Carter get into the car willingly.*

*She was not alone.*

*The person with her was someone she trusted.*

I looked at Walter.

"Who was with her?""

Walter stared at the page.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"The person who raised you.""

My breathing stopped.

"Robert.""

Walter nodded.

And then my phone began ringing.

Unknown number.

I stared at the screen.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone knew.

Whoever was calling...

knew we had found the truth.

I answered.

"Hello?""

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice spoke.

A voice I had trusted my entire life.

"Emily.""

My blood turned cold.

"Robert?""

A quiet sigh came through the phone.

"I was hoping you would never find out.""

I couldn't speak.

Then he said the words that shattered everything.

"I didn't kill your mother.""

May you like

A pause.

"But I was the reason she died.""
