Amused

Chapter 5: The Enemy Inside The Family

The photograph changed everything.

Again.

I thought I had reached the bottom of the truth.

I was wrong.

There was always another layer.

Another secret.

Another person who had decided my life was something they could control.

I met Colonel Hayes at headquarters the next morning.

He placed the photograph on the table.

“We need to be careful.””

I studied the image.

My father looked younger.

Different.

Standing beside my biological parents.

Smiling.

Not like enemies.

Like friends.

“What are you saying?””

Colonel Hayes folded his hands.

“Your father wasn’t just involved.””

I waited.

“He was one of them.””

The room became silent.

“One of who?””

“The group your biological parents were investigating.””

I felt sick.

Everything I believed about Robert shattered again.

He wasn’t a man who made one terrible decision.

He was a man who built his entire life around hiding the truth.

“Why did he take me?””

Colonel Hayes answered carefully.

“Because you were evidence.””

My hands tightened.

“Evidence?””

“Your parents had information stored somewhere. Information that could expose powerful people.””

“And me?””

“You were the only person who knew where it was hidden.””

I laughed quietly.

“I was a child.””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more.

“Exactly.””

For twenty-eight years, everyone around me had acted like I was fragile.

Like I needed protection.

But the truth was much darker.

I was never protected.

I was contained.

When I returned home, Robert was waiting.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

“You found out.””

I placed the photograph on the table.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

He looked at it.

And closed his eyes.

That was the answer.

“You worked with them.””

“I thought I could control it.””

“Control what?””

“The situation.””

I stepped back.

“You always say that.””

He looked at me.

“Because I was trying to survive.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You were trying to win.””

For the first time, he looked angry.

Not afraid.

Angry.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I stared at him.

“You sacrificed everyone else.””

The anger disappeared.

Because he knew.

He knew I was right.

Then he reached into a drawer.

He pulled out a small box.

“I kept this for you.””

I didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Something your mother left.””

My heart stopped.

Claire.

My real mother.

I opened the box slowly.

Inside was a necklace.

And a note.

The handwriting was delicate.

My hands shook as I read.

Nia,

If you ever find this, it means the truth finally survived.

I looked up.

Robert was crying.

The note continued.

Your father will tell you he saved you.

He will tell you he had no choice.

But remember this:

The person who takes away your freedom cannot call it protection.

I closed my eyes.

Then I read the final line.

The one that changed everything.

There was one person who helped Robert hide the truth.

Someone close to us.

Someone you trusted.

I looked at my father.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who helped you?””

His face went pale.

“Nia…”

“Who?””

The front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Claire stood there.

Behind her was Vanessa.

And in Vanessa’s hand was another document.

She looked terrified.

“I found something.””

She handed it to me.

I read the name at the top.

And my blood froze.

Because the person who helped my father erase my past…

was not a stranger.

May you like

It was the person who had spent twenty-eight years calling herself my mother.

Evelyn Carter.
