Chapter 5: The Family Secret
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat on the couch while the rest of the house stayed dark.
The photograph was on the coffee table.
I had looked at it so many times that Megan’s face was burned into my mind.
The smile.
The way she held my newborn daughter.
The way Mark stood beside her.
Like I was not part of my own family.
At sunrise, Lily came downstairs.
She was holding her stuffed rabbit.
The same one she had slept with since she was two.
“Mommy?””
I quickly covered the photograph.
“Yes, baby?””
She climbed onto the couch beside me.
“Is Daddy coming home?””
The question hurt more than anything else.
I forced myself to smile.
“I don’t know.””
She looked down.
“Is he mad at me?””
I turned toward her immediately.
“No.””
I held her face gently.
“Listen to me, Lily. Nothing that happened was because of you.””
“But Aunt Megan said I was bad.””
My chest tightened.
“She was wrong.””
Lily was quiet.
Then she whispered:
“Daddy didn’t think she was wrong.””
I froze.
“What?””
She looked confused.
“He told Aunt Megan she was being nice.””
The room went silent.
“When did Daddy say that?””
Lily shrugged.
“After dinner. Before we left.””
My heart sank.
Because Mark had not only stayed silent.
He had reassured Megan.
In front of our daughter.
I waited until Lily went upstairs before I called him.
He answered after three rings.
“Chloe.””
His voice sounded tired.
Not guilty.
Tired.
“I need you to answer one question.””
A pause.
“What?””
“Did you tell Megan she was being nice after she hit Lily?””
Silence.
That was enough.
“Mark.””
“I was trying to calm everyone down.””
“You told our daughter’s attacker she was nice.””
“She’s not an attacker.””
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The defense.
Again.
“She hit a five-year-old.””
“She lost control.””
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“She made a choice.””
He didn’t respond.
“Did you know about the hospital?””
Another silence.
This one was different.
Fear.
I heard it.
“What are you talking about?””
“Megan holding Lily before I did.””
His breathing changed.
“Who told you?””
I almost laughed.
“You’re not denying it.””
“Chloe—”
“You let me believe my first moments with my daughter were something they weren’t.””
“It wasn’t a big deal.””
I stood.
“It wasn’t a big deal?””
“No.””
“Mark, she wanted to take our baby.””
“She was emotional.””
“She said Lily should have been hers.””
“She didn’t mean it.””
I looked around the house.
At the pictures.
At the life I built.
“How many times have you explained away things she did?””
“Chloe.””
“How many?””
His silence answered.
I hung up.
An hour later, I went to the place where the truth started.
Linda’s house.
I didn’t call first.
I wanted to see their faces before they had time to prepare.
Megan opened the door.
She looked surprised.
Then annoyed.
“Chloe.””
I stepped inside.
“Where’s Mark?””
Her expression changed slightly.
“He’s not here.””
“Good.””
She crossed her arms.
“If you came to apologize—”
I laughed.
The sound surprised both of us.
“Apologize?””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You attacked me.””
I stepped closer.
“You attacked my daughter.””
“She was misbehaving.””
“She was eating turkey.””
“She ignored me.””
“She’s five.””
Megan’s jaw tightened.
Then she smiled.
That same smile from Thanksgiving.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I have always been part of this family.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her smile faded.
“Yes.””
She walked toward the living room.
“Linda always understood me.””
“Linda helped you hurt my daughter.””
“Careful.””
I followed her.
“No. You be careful.””
She stopped.
“You think you know everything because you found one old picture?””
My heart skipped.
“One old picture?””
Her eyes widened slightly.
Too late.
She had said too much.
“What else is there?””
She looked away.
“Megan.””
She didn’t answer.
“What else?””
Finally, she whispered:
“Ask Mark why he stopped trying to save your marriage three years ago.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“You think Thanksgiving was the first time he chose me?””
My hands went cold.
“Megan…”
She stepped closer.
“Your husband has been choosing me for years.””
Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
There was a picture attached.
A hotel receipt.
My eyes moved to the date.
Three years earlier.
The month after Lily’s second birthday.
Then I read the name on the reservation.
Guest:
Mark Anderson.
And the second guest listed below it.
Megan Anderson.
My blood froze.
Because Megan wasn’t just my sister-in-law.
She had my husband’s last name.
May you like
And the message below the picture said:
“Ask them why they never told you about the night they spent together.””
