Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Door

The door opened an inch.

Then two.

Detective Harris aimed his weapon at the gap.

“Melissa! Show me your hands!””

A woman's voice laughed softly.

“You still think a gun will save her?””

Harris shouted, “Hands where I can see them!””

The door opened wider.

Jessica stood there.

Her wedding dress was still torn.

Her face was streaked with tears.

And behind her was Melissa.

The woman from the photograph.

The woman who looked enough like my mother to make my skin crawl.

She held something against Jessica's neck.

A small blade.

Daniel took one step forward.

“Jessica.””

“Don't,” she whispered.

Melissa pressed the blade closer.

“That's better.””

Detective Harris kept his weapon raised.

“Let her go.””

Melissa smiled.

“Of course.””

She shoved Jessica into the room.

Jessica stumbled.

Daniel caught her.

Melissa stepped inside.

The door slammed behind her.

Rose moved toward the control panel.

Melissa immediately pointed the blade at her.

“Don't.””

Rose stopped.

“You're running out of places to hide.””

Melissa laughed.

“I've been hiding in plain sight for three years.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You killed my father.””

Melissa looked at him.

“No.””

She glanced at me.

“Your mother did.””

I shook my head.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a photograph.

It showed me standing beside my husband's car.

The same car.

The same night.

The timestamp read 10:22 p.m.

Daniel stared at it.

“That's Mom.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“I wasn't there.””

Melissa smiled.

“Then explain the photograph.””

“I can't.””

“Exactly.””

Jessica stepped forward.

“Daniel, don't listen to her.””

Melissa turned the blade toward Jessica.

“You're the one who should be quiet.””

Jessica flinched.

Daniel moved between them.

“Don't touch her.””

Melissa smiled.

“There he is.””

“What do you want?””

“Your father's trust.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That's it?””

“That's never it.””

“What else?””

Melissa looked at me.

“Your mother.””

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

“Because she knows where the original trust documents are.””

“I don't.””

“Yes, you do.””

“I swear I don't.””

Melissa sighed.

“Evelyn, you've always been terrible at lying.””

I looked at Rose.

She shook her head.

“Don't tell her anything.””

Melissa laughed.

“Still protecting your sister?””

Rose stepped forward.

“You won't get what you want.””

“You said that three years ago.””

“And you failed.””

“No.””

Melissa's smile vanished.

“You failed.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Your father wasn't killed in the crash.””

Daniel's face went pale.

“What?””

“He survived.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

Melissa looked directly at me.

“He was alive when you reached the car.””

My knees weakened.

“That isn't true.””

“He was conscious.””

“No.””

“He tried to speak.””

“Stop.””

“He said your name.””

“Stop!””

Melissa smiled.

“And then you walked away.””

The room became silent.

I could hear my own heartbeat.

“I didn't.””

“You did.””

“I called the ambulance.””

“After you took something from him.””

My hands began shaking.

“What?””

“The key.””

I froze.

“What key?””

Melissa looked at Daniel.

“The key to the trust.””

Daniel turned toward me.

“Mom?””

“I don't remember.””

“You don't remember taking it?””

“No.””

Melissa laughed.

“Of course you don't.””

Rose stepped forward.

“She drugged Evelyn.””

Melissa's smile disappeared.

“Careful.””

Rose continued.

“That's why she doesn't remember.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Drugged?””

Rose nodded.

“Your mother was drugged that night.””

Melissa shook her head.

“I didn't drug her.””

“Then who did?””

Melissa said nothing.

Rose looked at Jessica.

“Tell him.””

Jessica's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

Rose stared at her.

“You know.””

Jessica shook her head.

“I only found out last year.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Found out what?””

Jessica wiped her tears.

“That your mother wasn't the one who drove your father that night.””

Daniel stared.

“Who was?””

Jessica looked at Melissa.

“She was.””

Melissa laughed.

“Still blaming me?””

“You were driving.””

“Yes.””

“You caused the crash.””

“No.””

Jessica's voice broke.

“You did.””

Melissa shook her head.

“Your father was already dying.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Why?””

Melissa answered.

“Because he was poisoned.””

The word seemed to freeze the room.

I whispered:

“Poisoned?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Melissa looked at me.

“That's what I've been trying to tell you.””

She reached into her coat and removed a small vial.

“This was found in your kitchen.””

I stared at it.

“No.””

“Your husband's fingerprints were on the bottle.””

Daniel looked horrified.

“Mom?””

“I didn't poison him.””

“I never said you did.””

Melissa smiled.

“But someone wanted you to think you did.””

Detective Harris spoke.

“Who?””

Melissa looked at him.

“Eleanor.””

My mother's name.

Again.

“No.””

“Your mother was alive when your husband died.””

“My mother died years before.””

Melissa shook her head.

“That's what you were told.””

I couldn't breathe.

Rose closed her eyes.

Melissa continued.

“Eleanor didn't die.””

I looked at Rose.

She nodded slowly.

“She disappeared.””

My mind raced.

The woman who looked like my mother.

The woman in the video.

The woman at the funeral.

The woman at the stairs.

It couldn't be.

I whispered:

“Where is she?””

Melissa smiled.

“You've been looking at her all morning.””

I turned toward Rose.

Rose's eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

I stared at her.

“You…”

Rose shook her head.

“I'm not Eleanor.””

“Then who is?””

She looked at Melissa.

“Tell her.””

Melissa's smile widened.

“Your mother is still alive.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where?””

Melissa looked toward the hotel ceiling.

“She's watching us.””

Every monitor in the room suddenly turned on.

There were dozens of camera feeds.

Hallways.

Lobby.

Parking garage.

Bridal suite.

Elevators.

And one room.

A dark bedroom.

A woman sat in a chair facing the camera.

Her hair was gray.

Her hands rested in her lap.

I couldn't breathe.

I knew that face.

My mother.

Eleanor.

Alive.

She leaned toward the camera.

Then smiled.

The speaker crackled.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

My legs gave out.

Daniel caught me.

“Mom!””

I couldn't look away.

My mother spoke again.

“You've forgotten so much.””

Melissa lowered her weapon.

Jessica began crying.

Rose whispered:

“This wasn't supposed to happen.””

Eleanor smiled.

“It was always supposed to happen.””

Then she said:

“Bring Daniel to me.””

The screen went black.

Daniel looked at me.

“What do we do?””

I wiped my tears.

“We find her.””

Detective Harris shook his head.

“No. We secure this building first.””

But before he could finish, the hotel fire alarm erupted.

Jessica screamed.

Smoke began pouring beneath the door.

Melissa looked toward the hallway.

“She started it.””

Rose grabbed Daniel.

“Move!””

The smoke thickened.

Harris kicked open the emergency exit.

Everyone rushed toward the stairwell.

But as we descended, I heard something beneath the alarm.

A woman's voice.

Coming from the speakers.

My mother's voice.

“Evelyn…”

I stopped.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Mom, keep moving.””

The voice came again.

“Your son doesn't know what he did.””

I froze.

Daniel stared at me.

“What did she say?””

The speaker crackled.

Then my mother whispered:

“Ask him about the night your father died.””

Daniel went pale.

I turned toward him.

“Daniel?””

He couldn't meet my eyes.

“What did you do?””

He said nothing.

And that was when I realized the biggest secret in our family might not belong to my mother.

It might belong to my son.
