Amused

Chapter 9: The Woman in the Photograph

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself that the woman in the photograph wasn't Claire.

The image was grainy. The woman's face had been scratched out, and the angle made it difficult to identify her clothing.

But the car beside her was unmistakable.

The black sedan from Rebecca's photograph.

Claire's car.

At 5:12 p.m., Detective Cole called and asked me to come to the station. Maya's medical team agreed that I could leave briefly, provided the hospital social worker remained with her and I stayed reachable.

Before I left, I sat beside my daughter.

“I need to speak with the police about Uncle Daniel.””

“Are you going to see Mom?””

“No.””

Maya studied my face.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

She nodded, then reached into the bedside drawer and pulled out a folded drawing.

It showed three people standing in front of a house.

One was a little girl.

One was a tall man with dark hair.

The third figure stood apart from them, with no face.

“What's this?”” I asked.

Maya looked down.

“I drew it after Uncle Daniel died.””

I sat very still.

“Why didn't you show me?””

“Mom said it was a bad picture. She told me to throw it away.””

I looked at the drawing again.

“Who's the man?””

“Uncle Daniel.””

“And the little girl?””

“Me.””

I pointed to the faceless figure.

“Who is that?””

Maya hesitated.

“Mom.””

My chest tightened.

“Why doesn't she have a face?””

Maya's voice dropped.

“Because I couldn't remember what she looked like when she was being nice.””

I closed my eyes.

I had no words that could make that sentence less devastating.

I folded the drawing carefully and placed it in my jacket pocket.

“I'm going to keep this safe.””

Maya nodded.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“If Mom says she's sorry, do I have to forgive her?””

“No. You don't have to do anything you're not ready to do.””

She leaned against me.

“Okay.””

I kissed her forehead and left for the station.

Detective Cole was waiting in a conference room with two other investigators. The blue envelope lay on the table beside several photographs and a printed report.

He gestured toward a chair.

“We've made progress in establishing the timeline. I want to show you what we've found, but I need to be clear that some of this remains unverified.””

I nodded.

He placed the photograph in front of me.

Daniel stood outside a hospital entrance, wearing the gray coat I'd given him for his birthday. He looked tired but alert.

Richard Hale stood beside him, holding a folder.

The black sedan was parked behind them.

The woman stood near the passenger door.

“Where was this taken?”” I asked.

“Outside St. Vincent's Medical Center, at 11:21 p.m. on the night Daniel died.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Why was Daniel at a hospital?””

“We're checking the records. The initial information suggests he may have been trying to obtain documentation connected to his medication.””

“Was Claire there?””

“We haven't confirmed her identity in the photograph. We're examining the vehicle and comparing the image with other evidence.””

I turned to the report.

“What about Richard Hale?””

“The records show he had access to several documents connected to Daniel's estate. Some were altered after Daniel's death.””

“Altered how?””

“Signatures appear to have been copied onto transfer forms. We need handwriting and digital forensic examinations before reaching conclusions.””

I thought about the house I'd believed was sold.

The money that had continued flowing through the trust.

The documents Claire had told me were settled.

“Did Richard work with Claire?””

“We have evidence that they communicated frequently during the weeks before Daniel died. We're reviewing their messages.””

“Can I see them?””

“Not yet.””

I exhaled slowly.

“Detective, I need to know what happened at 11:43.””

Cole nodded.

“We found a second photograph. It was taken from a nearby traffic camera. The image shows Daniel's car stopping on the shoulder of the road.””

My hands tightened.

“Was he alone?””

“The footage is inconclusive. The weather was poor, and the camera was some distance away. But we can see another vehicle approaching several minutes later.””

“The black sedan?””

“Yes.””

“What happened next?””

“The sedan stopped behind Daniel's car. Someone got out and approached the driver's side.””

I stared at the detective.

“Can you identify the person?””

“Not yet.””

I looked down at the photograph again.

Daniel had been alive at 11:21 p.m.

His car had stopped at 11:43 p.m.

At some point after that, he had died.

Claire had told me she'd found him after the crash.

But she'd also admitted, on the recording, that she had been arguing with him that evening.

“Did Daniel's car actually crash at 11:43?””

“We can't confirm the precise time yet. The traffic camera captured a vehicle stopping, but we don't know whether the damage occurred before or after that moment.””

I nodded, forcing myself to listen carefully.

“What's the next step?””

“We're trying to locate the original hospital records and determine who accessed Daniel's medical file. We're also reviewing the company's financial records and the recordings from Whitmore House.””

He slid another document across the table.

It was a photocopy of a hospital intake form.

Daniel's name appeared at the top.

The time was 11:17 p.m.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Patient requested documentation regarding unauthorized prescription access.*

My stomach tightened.

“Did he see a doctor?””

“The records are incomplete. Someone accessed the file the following morning and requested that certain documents be transferred to an external archive.””

“Who?””

“Richard Hale's office.””

I leaned back.

The pieces were beginning to form a picture, but every answer seemed to create another question.

“Why would my attorney have access to Daniel's hospital records?””

“That is one of the questions we're investigating.””

I looked at the photograph of the black sedan.

“Could the woman have been at the hospital with Daniel?””

“Possibly.””

“And then followed him to the road?””

“That's one theory. We need more evidence.””

I rubbed my face.

“Has Claire made another statement?””

“She has.””

“What did she say?””

“She claims Daniel contacted her because he believed someone was trying to frame him. She says she went to meet him, but left before his accident.””

“Does she explain why she didn't tell me?””

“She says she was afraid you'd misunderstand.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's convenient.””

Cole didn't disagree.

Then he opened a folder and removed a printed email.

“This message was recovered from an account associated with Richard Hale. It was sent at 11:39 p.m. on the night Daniel died.””

The message contained a single sentence.

The child must never learn what happened to her mother.

I stared at it.

“What does that mean?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Was it sent to Claire?””

“The recipient's account has been deactivated. We're working to recover the full header information.””

I felt a cold pressure behind my ribs.

“What happened to Maya's mother?””

Cole looked at me carefully.

“Your wife is Maya's biological mother, correct?””

“Yes.””

“Then we need to establish whether the message refers to her, another person, or something else entirely.””

I thought about the scratched-out face in the photograph.

The faceless figure in Maya's drawing.

The way Claire had insisted that Daniel's name was forbidden.

I had assumed she was trying to erase my brother.

What if she'd been trying to hide something about Maya's birth?

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.””

Cole folded his hands.

“Mr. Bennett, I need to ask you something about Maya's medical history. Did Claire ever tell you that your daughter had a serious illness as an infant?””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Did she ever mention complications during pregnancy or delivery?””

“She told me Maya was born healthy.””

Cole made a note.

“Do you have access to the original birth records?””

“I think so. Why?””

“We found a reference to a pediatric medical file that predates Maya's current records. The file appears to have been accessed using credentials connected to the same company Daniel investigated.””

My mouth went dry.

“What was in it?””

“We haven't recovered the complete file.””

I looked at the email again.

The child must never learn what happened to her mother.

For the first time, I wondered whether the secret wasn't simply about the medication.

Perhaps Daniel had uncovered something about Maya herself.

Something Claire had spent ten years trying to conceal.

At 6:03 p.m., Detective Cole received a call and stepped outside the room.

I sat alone with the documents.

A few minutes later, he returned.

“We've located Richard Hale.””

“Where?””

“His office.””

“Is he cooperating?””

“He has agreed to speak with investigators, but he has requested legal counsel.””

I nodded.

“Can I talk to him?””

“No. You should not contact him.””

“Detective, I need answers.””

“I understand. But we cannot risk compromising the investigation.””

He gathered the documents.

“There's one more thing. The photograph of the woman beside the sedan has been enhanced. We still can't identify her with certainty, but we've found a distinctive bracelet on her wrist.””

He placed a close-up image on the table.

A silver chain with a small heart-shaped charm.

I stared at it.

I'd bought that bracelet for Claire on our fifth wedding anniversary.

She'd worn it for years.

Until she told me she'd lost it.

“That's my wife's bracelet,” I whispered.

Cole watched me carefully.

“Can you confirm that?””

“Yes.””

“Are you certain?””

I nodded.

“I gave it to her.””

He made a note.

“That supports the possibility that Claire was present, but we still need to verify the photograph and establish the full timeline.””

I stood.

“Then what happens now?””

“We continue the investigation. You return to your daughter. If we need further information, we'll contact you.””

I left the station and drove straight back to the hospital.

Maya was awake, watching the sunset through the window.

When I entered, she smiled faintly.

“Did you find out what happened to Uncle Daniel?””

I sat beside her.

“Some of it.””

“Was Mom there?””

I took a breath.

“The police believe she may have been.””

Maya stared at the blanket.

“Uncle Daniel said she would tell you she wasn't.””

My chest tightened.

“Did he say anything else?””

She nodded slowly.

“He said that if you ever found out the truth, you should ask Grandma about the day I was born.””

I froze.

“The day you were born?””

Maya nodded.

“He said there was something in the hospital records that Mom didn't want you to see.””

I felt a chill move through me.

I remembered Maya's birth vividly: Claire gripping my hand, the nurses smiling, the doctor announcing that our daughter was healthy.

I remembered holding Maya for the first time and promising her that I would always protect her.

But I also remembered something else.

Claire had insisted on handling all the paperwork from the hospital.

She'd told me the records were routine.

She'd said there was no reason to keep copies of everything.

I had trusted her.

I looked at Maya.

“Sweetheart, did Uncle Daniel tell you anything about your birth?””

She hesitated.

“He said you weren't supposed to find out until I was older.””

“Find out what?””

Maya's voice dropped to a whisper.

“He said the woman who gave birth to me wasn't the woman who raised me.””

For a moment, I couldn't understand the words.

Then the room seemed to tilt.

“What did you say?””

Maya began to cry.

“He said Mom had a secret about where I came from. He said he was trying to find proof.””

I held her hand, struggling to speak.

“Did he tell you who your birth mother was?””

Maya shook her head.

“No. He said the name was in the blue envelope.””

I closed my eyes.

The envelope was in police custody.

The evidence was being examined.

And somewhere inside those documents was a secret that could change everything I believed about my family.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Detective Cole appeared.

We have identified the woman in the photograph.

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

She is not Claire Bennett.

A third followed.

The woman is listed in Daniel's medical records as Maya's biological mother.

I looked at my daughter.

She was watching me, terrified.

May you like

And for the first time since this nightmare began, I understood why Daniel had been so desperate to protect her.

Because the truth about her mother was far more complicated than either of us had imagined.
