Amused

Chapter 9: The Final Piece of the Truth

Nobody moved.

Not even the people standing outside the coffee shop.

The rain continued falling against the windows, but inside, the silence was heavier than any storm.

Malik stared at Victor Hale.

The man who had brought the envelope.

The man who claimed to be his father’s closest friend.

The man who had looked him in the eyes and promised he wanted the truth.

Now he stood beside Mrs. Baxter like he belonged there.

Like he had been part of the secret all along.

“No.””

The word came from Daniel.

His father.

Not loud.

Not angry.

Just broken.

Victor looked at him.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.””

Daniel laughed once.

A bitter sound.

“You brought them here.””

“I brought you here.””

“You know the difference.””

Malik looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Nobody answered.

His patience disappeared.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“No more.””

His voice shook.

“I don’t care who is scared. I don’t care who has secrets. I don’t care who thinks they’re protecting me.””

He pointed at Victor.

“You.””

Then Mrs. Baxter.

“You.””

Then his father.

“You.””

His eyes burned.

“I have spent my whole life hearing pieces of a story that everyone else already knows.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Malik…”

“No.””

He stepped back.

“I want the truth.””

Victor looked down.

Then slowly nodded.

“You deserve that.””

Malik almost laughed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Victor accepted the anger.

Because he knew he deserved it.

“I did betray Daniel.””

The confession shocked everyone.

Even Malik.

Mrs. Baxter looked at him.

“Victor.””

He shook his head.

“No more lies.””

He looked at Malik.

“Your father asked me to protect the evidence.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“And you failed.””

“Yes.””

Victor didn’t argue.

“I failed.””

Malik stared.

“What happened?””

Victor looked at the floor.

“The night Daniel disappeared, he gave me the location of the evidence.””

“The real location?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you keep it safe?””

Victor’s face changed.

“Because someone found me first.””

“Who?””

Victor looked toward Mrs. Baxter.

She already knew the answer.

“Someone inside the group.””

Malik frowned.

“The group?””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“The people who were trying to expose Marcus.””

Malik looked around.

“So someone working with my dad betrayed him.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the door behind Mrs. Baxter opened.

Another person stepped inside.

Malik’s heart stopped.

Not because he recognized him.

Because he didn’t.

And that was somehow worse.

The man was older.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

Calm eyes.

He looked like someone who had never needed to raise his voice to get what he wanted.

Marcus Vale.

Malik knew immediately.

Not because he had seen him.

Because everyone else reacted.

Daniel’s face went cold.

Denise grabbed Malik’s hand.

Mrs. Baxter stepped forward.

Victor lowered his head.

Marcus smiled.

“Daniel.””

His voice was almost friendly.

“You look older.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You look exactly the same.””

Marcus smiled.

“Some people know how to take care of themselves.””

Malik felt anger rising.

“You.””

Marcus looked at him.

A small smile appeared.

“So this is Malik.””

Daniel moved immediately.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Marcus ignored him.

“You have your father’s eyes.””

Malik hated how calm he was.

Like this was a normal conversation.

Like he wasn’t the reason their lives had fallen apart.

“You knew about me?””

Marcus looked surprised.

“Of course.””

“How long?””

“Since before you were born.””

Malik felt sick.

Marcus walked closer.

Daniel blocked him.

“Stay away.””

Marcus stopped.

“You always were dramatic.””

“And you always underestimated me.””

Marcus smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Malik.

“I underestimated your son.””

Everyone went silent.

Malik felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus glanced at the watch.

“You found the key.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“How did you know?””

Marcus looked at Victor.

Nobody needed an explanation.

Malik looked at Victor.

“You told him.””

Victor closed his eyes.

“I had no choice.””

Daniel looked furious.

“You always had a choice.””

Victor’s voice cracked.

“They had my daughter.””

Silence.

Malik looked at him.

“What?””

Victor swallowed.

“Marcus threatened my family.””

Marcus corrected him calmly.

“I offered him a choice.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You destroyed him.””

Marcus shrugged.

“He destroyed himself.””

Malik looked at Marcus.

“You don’t even care.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Care about what?””

“My dad.””

A strange expression crossed Marcus’s face.

Almost disappointment.

“Your father was brilliant.””

Malik didn’t expect that.

“He was loyal.””

Marcus continued.

“Too loyal.””

Daniel looked away.

Marcus smiled slightly.

“That was always his weakness.””

“No,” Malik said.

Marcus looked at him.

“It wasn’t loyalty.””

He stepped closer.

“It was believing people could change.””

For the first time, Marcus’s expression shifted.

A small crack.

Anger.

Then it disappeared.

“You sound just like him.””

Malik tightened his grip on the watch.

“You’re afraid.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“Of what?””

“My dad’s truth.””

The room went quiet.

Marcus looked at the watch.

Then at Malik.

“You have no idea what you’re carrying.””

“Then tell me.””

Marcus studied him.

“You think this is about exposing me.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

Marcus looked around.

“It’s about what happens after.””

Nobody spoke.

Malik frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus walked to the table.

“Project Sentinel was never just a program.””

He tapped the folder.

“It was an idea.””

“What idea?””

“That people could be predicted.””

Malik shook his head.

“That’s insane.””

“Is it?””

Marcus smiled.

“Every decision you make leaves a pattern.””

He pointed at the watch.

“Every fear.””

“Every habit.””

“Every weakness.””

His eyes moved to Malik.

“Your father believed people were too complicated to predict.””

“And you?””

Marcus smiled.

“I believed he was wrong.””

Malik felt disgusted.

“So you watched people?””

“We studied behavior.””

“You controlled people.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Which was an answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You used it to remove anyone who challenged you.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You say that like it was personal.””

“It was.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“It was business.””

Malik couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You ruined people’s lives and called it business.””

Marcus looked at him.

“That’s how the world works.””

“No.””

Malik’s voice was steady now.

“That’s how you work.””

Something changed in Marcus’s face.

A tiny moment of anger.

Because Malik had touched something.

A truth.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“He really is your son.””

Daniel looked proud.

Even now.

Especially now.

Marcus reached toward the watch.

“Give me that.””

Malik stepped back.

“No.””

Marcus sighed.

“Malik.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand what happens if you keep it.””

“My dad hid it for a reason.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“He hid it because he knew what it could do.””

Daniel said nothing.

Malik looked at his father.

“Is that true?””

Daniel hesitated.

That hesitation hurt.

“What does the watch unlock?””

Daniel looked at him.

“The final evidence.””

“Where?””

Daniel looked at the watch.

Then at Malik.

“Inside Sentinel.””

Malik frowned.

“I thought Sentinel was a program.””

“It was.””

“Then how does a watch unlock it?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because your father didn’t hide the evidence in a place.””

He looked at Malik.

“He hid it in the system.””

The room went silent.

Marcus smiled.

“Now you understand why I need it.””

Malik looked at the watch.

The tiny photograph.

The engraving.

Everything his father had left behind.

Then he noticed something.

A small mark beneath the photograph.

A symbol.

Not the silver circle.

Something else.

A line.

A pattern.

A code.

His father’s handwriting.

Daniel saw his expression.

“What?””

Malik looked up.

“Dad.””

Everyone waited.

“The watch isn’t the key.””

Daniel froze.

“What did you say?””

Malik turned it over.

“The watch isn’t the key.””

He looked directly at Marcus.

“It’s the message.””

Marcus’s smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Malik…”

The boy pointed at the engraving.

“Dad didn’t hide the evidence from them.””

He looked at everyone.

“He hid it from everyone.””

Marcus moved suddenly.

“Take the watch.””

Two men stepped forward.

Daniel grabbed Malik.

Mrs. Baxter blocked the path.

Victor stood frozen.

Then Malik noticed something.

The old man from the coffee shop.

The one who had left earlier.

He was standing outside the window.

Holding something.

A phone.

Recording everything.

Marcus saw him.

His face changed.

“No.””

The old man smiled.

“Too late.””

Marcus turned.

And Malik finally understood.

The truth was never hidden because nobody knew.

The truth was hidden because someone had been waiting for the right moment to reveal it.

The old man held up his phone.

“I think the world deserves to hear what you just admitted.””

Marcus stared.

“You have no idea what you started.””

The old man smiled.

“I know exactly what I started.””

Then every phone in the coffee shop buzzed.

Malik looked down.

A notification appeared.

A live video.

Thousands of viewers.

The title made his heart stop.

*THE SENTINEL FILES: THE TRUTH ABOUT MARCUS VALE*

Marcus looked at the screens.

For the first time, he looked powerless.

But then he smiled.

A slow, confident smile.

And Malik realized something was wrong.

Because Marcus wasn’t looking at the video.

He was looking at Daniel.

“You still don’t know, do you?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Know what?””

Marcus smiled.

“The evidence your son found…”

He looked at Malik.

“…was never meant to destroy me.””

May you like

A pause.

“It was meant to expose you.””
