Amused

Chapter 5: The File My Father Left Behind

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of fear.

Because every memory I had started changing.

The people I trusted.

The conversations I remembered.

The moments I ignored.

Everything looked different.

At six in the morning, Thomas Avery arrived at my house.

He was in his late fifties, carrying a worn briefcase and the exhausted expression of someone who had been holding a secret too long.

Marian greeted him at the door.

“You better have proof.””

Thomas nodded.

“I do.””

He entered the living room and placed the briefcase on the table.

“I should have come sooner.””

I looked at him.

“Why didn’t you?””

His eyes dropped.

“Because your father made me promise.””

That stopped me.

“My father?””

Thomas opened the briefcase.

Inside was a folder.

Old.

Yellowed.

With my name written on the front.

I touched it.

“What is this?””

“Your father’s contingency file.””

I frowned.

“My father died six years ago.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does it mention Vanessa?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Thomas.

“Explain.””

He opened the folder.

The first page was a letter.

My father’s handwriting.

The same handwriting I remembered from birthday cards.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, someone has tried to take what you built.

My hands went cold.

Thomas continued.

“Your father was suspicious of people around you.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed success attracts people who love what you have, not who you are.””

I looked at the pages.

There were notes.

Names.

Dates.

Financial concerns.

Then I saw something.

A name.

Daniel Mercer.

My throat tightened.

“Daniel?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father never trusted him.””

“But Daniel worked with me for years.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your father wanted you to make your own choices.””

I laughed quietly.

“That worked out well.””

Thomas looked ashamed.

“There’s more.””

He pulled out another document.

A report.

A private investigation.

And at the top was a photograph.

Vanessa.

Before she met me.

Before our wedding.

Before she became my wife.

The report showed she had once been connected to a company involved in financial fraud.

Not convicted.

Not charged.

But connected.

I looked at Marian.

“She hid this.””

“Yes.””

Thomas pointed to another page.

“She also hid something else.””

“What?””

He turned the document around.

A bank transfer.

A large amount of money.

Sent from an account connected to Daniel.

To Vanessa.

Three days before our wedding.

I felt something break inside me.

Not my heart.

Something colder.

My trust.

Then Thomas reached into the folder one final time.

“I found this after your accident.””

I stared.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your father predicted someone might try to use your weakness against you.””

He handed me a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Inside was a single note.

Only one sentence.

*The person who tries to save you after you fall may be the person who pushed you.*

My phone rang.

Again.

This time, it was Grace.

I answered immediately.

“Grace?””

Her breathing was fast.

“Mr. Hale…”

“What happened?””

“I found something in Vanessa’s room.””

I stood.

“What?””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Your wife wasn’t waiting for you to recover.””

A pause.

May you like

“She was waiting for you to die.””

The call ended.
