Amused

Chapter 8: The Enemy Inside The Legacy

I kept staring at the photograph.

Not because I didn’t understand what I was seeing.

Because I did.

And I didn’t want to.

The logo in the background belonged to a company my grandfather had trusted for nearly twenty years.

A company that had handled some of Harlow Capital’s most important investments.

A company whose executives had attended family events.

A company whose founder had once called my grandfather his closest friend.

*Blackstone Ridge Partners.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Explain.””

He rubbed his hands together nervously.

“I found it in Vanessa’s office.””

“You were searching her office?””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

I almost laughed.

The irony was impossible to ignore.

The man who had spent months invading my trust was now revealing someone had invaded his.

“When?””

“After the board meeting.””

“Why?””

“Because something didn’t add up.””

I waited.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Vanessa knew too much.””

“About what?””

“About Harlow.””

The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet.

“She knew your family history. She knew about the trust. She knew things even I didn’t know.””

I looked back at the photograph.

“How?””

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

“And?””

He swallowed.

“And I found this.””

I turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

A date.

A location.

And two initials.

*E.H.*

My heart sank.

Evelyn Harlow.

My aunt.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why is my aunt’s name here?””

His expression changed.

“Because she was there.””

“No.””

“She was.””

I pushed the photograph toward him.

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I stood so quickly the chair scraped against the floor.

“Daniel.””

“I’m not trying to hurt you.””

“Then stop giving me reasons to hate you.””

That silenced him.

For once, Daniel didn’t defend himself.

He just looked down.

“I know I’m the last person you want to trust.””

“Yes.””

“But I’m telling you the truth.””

I studied him.

And that was the most frustrating part.

Because Daniel had lied so much that even when he was honest, I had to question it.

“What happened in that meeting?””

He looked at the photograph.

“I don’t know.””

“You were there?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because Vanessa left the photo behind.””

That made no sense.

“Why would she leave evidence?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she wasn’t careless.””

“Then?””

He looked at me.

“Because she wanted me to find it.””

A chill moved through me.

“She wanted you to know?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because she wanted me afraid.””

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of Daniel.

Not because of Vanessa.

Because my entire understanding of my family had shifted.

For years, I believed Harlow Capital was built on loyalty.

Trust.

Relationships.

My grandfather always said a company was only as strong as the people protecting it.

But what happened when the people protecting it became the threat?

At 6:00 a.m., I was back at the office.

Thomas was already there.

He looked surprised.

“You didn’t sleep.””

“Neither did you.””

He gave a small smile.

“Fair point.””

I placed the photograph on his desk.

His expression changed instantly.

“Where did you get this?””

“Daniel.””

Thomas stared at the image.

“Claire…”

“Tell me the truth.””

He remained silent.

That was enough.

“Thomas.””

He sat down.

“There are things your grandfather never told you.””

I closed my eyes.

“I’m starting to notice a pattern.””

He sighed.

“Your grandfather trusted very few people.””

“Except Blackstone Ridge.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because their founder, Richard Vale, helped him build Harlow Capital.””

The name sounded familiar.

“He was like family.””

Thomas nodded.

“Until he wasn’t.””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

“Twenty years ago, there was a disagreement.””

“About?””

“Control.””

Of course.

It always came back to control.

“Your grandfather wanted Harlow Capital to remain private.””

“And Richard?””

“He believed the company had more potential if it expanded aggressively.””

“Meaning?””

“More investors. More risk. More power.””

I understood.

My grandfather built slowly.

Carefully.

Richard wanted speed.

“Who won?””

“Your grandfather.””

I looked at the photograph.

“But Richard never forgot.””

Thomas nodded.

“Apparently not.””

I picked up the picture.

“So Vanessa is connected to Blackstone Ridge.””

“Yes.””

“And Evelyn?””

Thomas hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because Thomas always knew.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

He looked away.

“Claire…”

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“I’m done being protected from the truth.””

Thomas was quiet.

Then he reached into a drawer.

He pulled out an old envelope.

“I was instructed to give this to you only if something like this happened.””

My stomach tightened.

“By my grandfather?””

“Yes.””

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The handwriting immediately broke something inside me.

I hadn’t seen it in years.

My grandfather.

My hands shook slightly as I read.

Claire,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that forced you to look deeper into the people around you.

I hope I am wrong.

But I learned a painful lesson in business and in life.

The people closest to you are not always the people protecting you.

I stopped.

My eyes blurred.

I continued.

You have always believed the best in people. That is your greatest strength. It is also the place where people may try to hurt you.

I swallowed.

Thomas looked away respectfully.

The letter continued.

If someone attempts to use Harlow Capital for personal gain, do not look only at the person making the move.

Look at the person who created the opportunity.

I lowered the letter.

Created the opportunity.

Not the person who acted.

The person behind it.

I read the final paragraph.

There is one person I never fully trusted after Richard Vale left Harlow.

My heart began beating faster.

The name appeared.

*Evelyn.*

I stopped reading.

No.

I couldn’t.

Not yet.

“Claire?””

I folded the letter.

“Did my grandfather think Evelyn was involved?””

Thomas looked at me.

“He was worried.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He sighed.

“It isn’t.””

I stood.

“Then what is the answer?””

Thomas looked at the floor.

“Your grandfather loved Evelyn.””

“I know.””

“But he also knew she carried resentment.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

“And he thought that resentment could be dangerous?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

I found Evelyn at her home that afternoon.

She opened the door and immediately knew why I was there.

“You found the letter.””

I froze.

“You knew about it?””

She looked tired.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Your grandfather told me he wrote it.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I hoped you would never need to read it.””

I stepped inside.

“Evelyn, I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

I placed the photograph on the table.

Her face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You know this meeting.””

Her silence answered.

“Who is that man?””

She didn’t respond.

“Evelyn.””

Finally, she whispered:

“Richard Vale.””

The room went cold.

“But he’s dead.””

“No.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He disappeared.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone said he retired.””

She looked at me.

“That was the story.””

My heart raced.

“Then where has he been?””

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Building something.””

“What?””

She turned back.

“A way back into Harlow Capital.””

I felt my pulse in my ears.

Everything suddenly connected.

Vanessa.

Daniel.

The forged documents.

The stolen information.

They weren’t trying to take over the company.

They were trying to weaken it first.

Then someone else would step in.

Someone with history.

Someone with patience.

“Evelyn,” I said quietly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Because I helped him.””

I froze.

“What?””

She sat down.

“I thought Richard was right.””

The words felt like a betrayal all over again.

“I thought your grandfather made the wrong choice.””

She covered her face.

“And Daniel knew.””

My voice became cold.

“How?””

“Because I told him.””

The silence was unbearable.

“You gave him information.””

“Yes.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“About Harlow Capital?””

She nodded.

“But I never knew what he planned.””

I stared at her.

Then she said something that changed the entire situation.

“Claire, Daniel wasn’t trying to destroy Harlow Capital.””

I looked at her.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“He was trying to save himself.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because Richard Vale didn’t hire Daniel to steal your company.””

A pause.

“He hired him because Daniel already knew how to get close to you.””

My blood ran cold.

The person I married.

The person I trusted.

The person who shared my home.

Had not just betrayed me.

He had been chosen.

And then Evelyn whispered the truth I wasn’t ready to hear.

“Claire…”

I looked at her.

“Daniel Mercer was never the plan.””

May you like

She took a breath.

“He was the entry point.””
