Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth About My First Father

My father’s words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

I stood there in the basement, surrounded by old boxes and forgotten memories, trying to understand what he had just said.

“He knows I wasn’t the first man who tried to take you away from Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked like he wanted to take the words back.

But he couldn’t.

Not anymore.

“Dad.””

He looked at the floor.

“Your biological father wasn’t the only person who wanted custody of you.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What?””

My mother looked confused.

“Robert, what are you talking about?””

My father looked at her.

Then at me.

“When you were born, Daniel wasn’t the only person who knew about you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who else knew?””

My father hesitated.

And that hesitation told me the answer was going to hurt.

“Your grandfather.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“My father.””

I stared.

“Your dad knew about Daniel?””

My father nodded.

I felt like another piece of my life had been pulled away.

“My entire family knew?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“Not everyone.””

He picked up the old recorder.

“Just my father.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked as confused as I felt.

“Why?””

My father sat down on the basement steps.

“Because before you were born, my father found out Sarah was pregnant.””

My mother’s face changed.

“He contacted you?””

My father nodded.

“He didn’t approve of Daniel.””

“Why?””

My father gave a bitter smile.

“Because Daniel didn’t have money.””

I felt anger rising.

“So this was about that?””

“No.””

My father shook his head.

“That was only part of it.””

“What else?””

He looked at me.

“My father believed people like Daniel weren’t supposed to be part of our family.””

The words made my stomach turn.

“People like him?””

My father looked ashamed.

“He judged him.””

I understood.

And I hated that I understood.

“So your father tried to get rid of him?””

My father nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My mother stepped back.

“You knew?””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

“After we were married.””

She stared.

“And you never told me?””

My father looked broken.

“I thought I could fix it.””

My mother laughed softly.

“You always think that.””

The sentence hit him.

Because it was true.

My father had spent his entire life trying to fix things by controlling them.

Even people.

Especially people.

“So what happened?””

My father looked at the recorder.

“This is why Ethan knows.””

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

He took a deep breath.

“When my father found out Daniel was trying to be involved in your life, he contacted Ethan.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan worked for him.””

I froze.

“What?””

My father nodded.

“Ethan wasn’t my friend at first.””

“Then what was he?””

“A problem solver.””

The phrase made me uncomfortable.

“What does that mean?””

My father looked away.

“It means when my father wanted something done, Ethan made it happen.””

I felt sick.

“And your father wanted Daniel gone.””

“Yes.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.””

My father looked at her.

“I didn’t know at first.””

“But you found out.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

He was quiet.

“After Daniel disappeared.””

I stared.

“So you spent all these years knowing someone else started this?””

My father nodded.

“And you still blamed yourself.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came softly.

“Because I continued it.””

Nobody spoke.

That was the first thing he had said that sounded completely honest.

He didn’t excuse himself.

He didn’t defend himself.

He admitted it.

I looked at the recorder.

“What’s on this one?””

My father pressed the button.

Static filled the basement.

Then Ethan’s voice.

“Robert, your father would be disappointed.””

My father’s face changed.

The recording continued.

“You were supposed to keep Daniel away.””

A pause.

“But instead, you started caring.””

I looked at my father.

Ethan laughed quietly.

“That was your mistake.””

The recording crackled.

“You forgot why your father hired me.””

My hands tightened.

Then Ethan said:

“People like us don’t protect families, Robert.””

A pause.

“We protect bloodlines.””

The recorder clicked.

Silence.

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He rubbed his face.

“My father cared about the family name.””

“That’s not an answer.””

My mother looked at him.

“What aren’t you telling us?””

My father stared at the floor.

Then he said:

“Daniel wasn’t the only person Ethan hurt.””

My heart dropped.

“Who else?””

My father looked at me.

“Your grandfather.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He tried to stop Ethan.””

The room went silent.

My father continued.

“After Daniel disappeared, my father realized Ethan had gone too far.””

“And?””

“And Ethan turned on him.””

I felt a chill.

“What happened?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“He died.””

My mother gasped.

“Your father died?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

My father looked away.

“Everyone thought it was an accident.””

I stared.

“But?””

“But it wasn’t.””

The basement felt smaller.

“You’re saying Ethan killed your father?””

My father nodded.

“I believe he did.””

“Believe?””

“I never had proof.””

I looked at the recorder.

“But Ethan does.””

My father nodded.

“That’s why he has power over me.””

Everything suddenly connected.

The fear.

The silence.

The years of control.

My father wasn’t just hiding Daniel.

He was hiding the fact that the same person who destroyed Daniel’s life had destroyed his own family too.

My mother walked toward him.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

My father looked at her.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Of what?””

“That I became the kind of person my father was.””

The words were quiet.

But they hit harder than anything else.

My father had spent years trying not to become his father.

And somehow, he had.

I looked away.

I didn’t know what I felt anymore.

Anger.

Sadness.

Confusion.

All of it.

Then I noticed something.

The recorder had a small blinking light.

It wasn’t finished.

“There’s more.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

I pointed.

The recorder was still running.

A few seconds later, Ethan’s voice returned.

But this time, it sounded different.

More serious.

“Robert, if Andre ever finds this, there is something else he deserves to know.””

My father froze.

The recording continued.

“Daniel Carter didn’t disappear because of the accident.””

My breath stopped.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“What?””

Ethan continued.

“He survived.””

Nobody moved.

My father’s face went pale.

“I told you he was alive.””

Ethan’s voice continued.

“But Robert doesn’t know where he went.””

The basement became silent.

Then:

“Because Daniel wasn’t running from Robert.””

A pause.

“He was running to protect Andre.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“What does that mean?””

The recording continued.

“The night Daniel disappeared, he discovered something.””

A pause.

“Something about Andre’s birth.””

I looked at my mother.

She looked terrified.

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“And when Daniel found out, he realized the truth.””

The recorder crackled.

“The man who raised Andre wasn’t the only one who had lied to him.””

I felt my body go cold.

My father whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

“Robert, you spent thirty years believing you stole another man’s son.””

A pause.

“But you never asked if Andre was ever yours to give away.””

The recorder stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at my mother.

And the fear in his eyes told me something.

Something I wasn’t ready to hear.

My mother sat down.

Her face was completely broken.

“Andre…”

I stepped back.

“What?””

She covered her mouth.

“I should have told you.””

My voice shook.

“Told me what?””

My father whispered:

“Your mother and I…”

He stopped.

My heart raced.

“No.””

I looked between them.

“No more secrets.””

My mother started crying.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“The man you thought was your biological father…”

She looked at the photograph of Daniel.

“He wasn’t the only possibility.””

I couldn’t move.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked just as lost as I was.

“We don’t know who your biological father is.””

The world went silent.

My entire life.

My name.

My blood.

Everything I thought I understood.

Gone.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

But it answered the question nobody in my family wanted to ask.

*“Andre, if you want the truth about your real father, meet me where Daniel Carter was last seen.””*

Underneath the message was an address.

And a name.

May you like

The person who sent it.

Ethan Ward.
