Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything
The message from Mark stayed on my phone screen for almost a full minute.
I didn’t move.
I didn’t blink.
I just stared at the words.
*I know Claire is with you. Ask her why she was the last person Emily called before she died.*
The room suddenly felt colder.
Claire noticed my expression.
“What did he say?””
I turned the phone toward her.
The second she read the message, all the color left her face.
David saw it too.
His expression changed from anger to confusion.
“What does he mean?””
Claire didn’t answer.
That was the first thing that scared me.
Not the message.
Not Mark knowing where we were.
The silence.
“Claire,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
“Tell me the truth.””
Her lips parted.
Then closed.
“I…”
“No more secrets.””
My voice surprised even me.
Because it wasn’t the voice of the woman who had spent years apologizing for Mark.
It was the voice of someone who was tired of being afraid.
Claire lowered herself into the chair.
“You’re right.””
She looked down.
“I owe you the truth.””
David stepped closer.
“Then start talking.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“The last time Emily called me, she wasn’t asking for help.””
She paused.
“She was warning me.””
The room went silent.
“About what?””
“About Mark.””
I looked at the flash drive sitting on the table.
“What’s on that?””
Claire reached for it.
“A recording.””
David frowned.
“A recording of what?””
Claire looked at him.
“The conversation I had with Emily.””
My heart pounded.
“You recorded her?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“Emily did.””
I looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t trust anyone anymore.””
The answer hurt.
Because I understood it.
When someone has been lied to enough times, they stop searching for kindness.
They search for proof.
Claire held the flash drive carefully.
“Emily gave me this the night she died.””
David stared.
“You said you copied it.””
“I did.””
“Where is the original?””
Claire looked away.
“I don’t know.””
A terrible silence followed.
“What do you mean you don’t know?””
“After Emily died, Mark came to my apartment.””
My stomach tightened.
“He came to your apartment?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The next morning.””
David’s face hardened.
“What did he want?””
Claire swallowed.
“The flash drive.””
I felt a chill.
“He knew about it?””
“He suspected.””
“How?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I told him Emily had called me.””
David shook his head.
“Why would you tell him that?””
“Because I was scared.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“He came to my apartment looking devastated. He acted like he was grieving. He told me Emily had been unstable.””
My hands tightened around the blanket.
“He convinced you.””
“Yes.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“He was very good at that.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“And then?””
“He asked if Emily left anything with me.””
“And you said?””
“I said no.””
For the first time, I saw something different in Claire.
Not fear.
Regret.
“He left.””
She looked at David.
“And that’s when I knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That he wasn’t looking for answers.””
She looked at me.
“He was looking for what Emily knew.””
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone turned.
A security guard stood outside.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone downstairs asking to see you.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“Your husband.””
David immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The guard nodded.
“I told him he couldn’t come up without permission.””
“Good.””
“But…”
Everyone waited.
“He said something I thought you should know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
The guard hesitated.
“He said if you don’t speak with him, he’ll release a video.””
My stomach dropped.
“A video of what?””
The guard shook his head.
“He didn’t say.””
The door closed.
Nobody spoke.
Then Claire whispered:
“He has something.””
David looked at her.
“What?””
“Mark doesn’t threaten unless he has something prepared.””
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time, a video file.
From Mark.
My fingers went cold.
David saw my face.
“Don’t open it.””
But I already knew.
Whatever was inside that video had been waiting for this moment.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my own house.
The living room.
The camera angle was unfamiliar.
Hidden.
Then I saw myself.
Sitting on the couch.
Crying.
I froze.
It was from months ago.
A night I barely remembered.
Mark’s voice came from behind the camera.
“You’re always so dramatic.””
My heart sank.
Then my own voice.
“I just want you to listen to me.””
The video continued.
Mark walked into view.
“You don’t know how good you have it.””
I watched myself lower my head.
“I’m tired.””
“And I’m tired of you acting like a victim.””
My breathing became shallow.
This wasn’t the worst part.
The worst part was what happened next.
Mark placed a document on the table.
“Sign this.””
My past self looked confused.
“What is it?””
“A financial agreement.””
“Why?””
“Because I need to protect us.””
Protect us.
The same words.
The same lie.
But then something happened.
Something I didn’t remember.
The camera zoomed in.
And I saw the document.
At the bottom.
My signature.
My heart stopped.
I had signed something.
“What is that?”” I whispered.
David moved closer.
“Pause it.””
I did.
He stared at the screen.
His face changed.
“Sarah…”
“What?””
“That’s not a financial agreement.””
I looked at him.
“Then what is it?””
David pointed.
“That’s a transfer authorization.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What did I transfer?””
David looked at the document.
“Your inheritance.””
My entire body went cold.
“What inheritance?””
Nobody answered.
Then I remembered.
My father.
Before he died, he left me money.
Not millions.
But enough to buy a home.
Enough to secure my future.
Mark always said he didn’t care about it.
He told me:
“Your money is your money.””
He lied.
The video continued.
My past self was still reading.
“I don’t understand this.””
Mark smiled.
“You don’t need to. I already explained it.””
I watched myself hesitate.
Then sign.
I covered my mouth.
“I signed it.””
Claire looked devastated.
“Sarah…”
“I signed it.””
The memory came back.
That night.
The argument.
Mark telling me I was being difficult.
Mark saying I didn’t trust him.
Mark staying silent until I apologized.
I thought I signed because I loved him.
But now I understood.
I signed because he exhausted me until I gave up.
The video ended.
A final message appeared.
*Come home and we can fix this.*
David looked furious.
“He’s trying to intimidate you.””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at the screen.
“He’s trying to make sure she comes back before she sees the rest.””
I frowned.
“The rest?””
Claire reached for the flash drive.
“Sarah, the recording Emily made…”
She connected it to the laptop beside the bed.
A file appeared.
Created three years ago.
The name was simple.
*For Sarah.*
I felt tears fill my eyes.
Claire pressed play.
At first, there was only silence.
Then Emily’s voice.
Soft.
Afraid.
“Sarah, if you’re hearing this, I’m sorry.””
My heart broke.
“First, I need you to know something.””
A pause.
“Mark knows.””
I froze.
Emily continued.
“He knows I found the documents. He knows I talked to Claire. And he knows I tried to warn you.””
David closed his eyes.
Claire covered her mouth.
Then Emily said the words that made the entire room disappear.
“But the worst thing I found wasn’t the money.””
A pause.
A shaky breath.
“The worst thing I found was why Mark chose Sarah.””
I leaned closer.
The recording continued.
“He didn’t marry her because of love.””
My hands trembled.
“He married her because of something her father left behind.””
The audio crackled.
Then Emily whispered:
“Sarah, your father didn’t just leave you money.””
I stopped breathing.
“He left you something Mark has been searching for his entire life.””
The recording suddenly cut.
The screen went black.
Everyone stared.
Claire looked terrified.
David whispered:
“What was that?””
I looked at the flash drive.
Then at the door.
Because suddenly, I understood.
Mark wasn’t trying to get me back because he loved me.
He wasn’t trying to stop a scandal.
He wasn’t even trying to protect his money.
He was trying to reach something.
Something I had.
Something I didn’t even know existed.
And outside the clinic, my husband was waiting.
May you like
Because whatever my father left behind…
Mark was willing to destroy my entire life to get it.
