Chapter 3: The Room No One Was Allowed to Enter

Daniel had locked Laura's study six months after her death.

Not because he wanted to hide anything, but because every object inside had become a reminder of the woman he had lost.

Her favorite blue cardigan still hung over the back of her chair. A coffee mug sat on the desk, untouched since the morning Daniel had found it there after the funeral. Children's drawings covered one wall, including a crooked picture Ethan had made of their family when he was four.

Daniel had never been able to bring himself to clear the room.

Vanessa had insisted that keeping it locked was unhealthy.

He had disagreed.

Now she stood beside the door, holding the silver key.

“How did you get that?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked down at it.

“Laura gave it to me.””

“No.””

“Daniel—”

“You never met Laura.””

Ethan's small voice came from behind him.

“She did.””

Daniel turned.

His son stood beside the staircase, one hand resting protectively on Sophie's back.

“When?”” Daniel asked.

Ethan hesitated.

“The day Mommy went to the hospital.””

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

Laura had suffered a severe internal injury in the accident. The doctors had told Daniel that she had been conscious briefly after arriving at the hospital, but she had died before he could reach her.

He had spent years wondering what she might have said if he had arrived ten minutes earlier.

He had never imagined she might have seen Vanessa.

“Ethan,” he said carefully, “are you certain?””

His son nodded.

“Mommy told me to stay with Sophie. Then a woman came into the house. She talked to Mommy in the kitchen.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

“What did the woman look like?””

Ethan glanced at Vanessa.

“Like her.””

Silence filled the hallway.

Daniel looked at his wife as though he were seeing her for the first time.

“You were at my house the night Laura died?””

Vanessa gripped the key.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“I knew someone who worked with Laura.””

“Who?””

“Daniel, please. Let me show you.””

She placed the key in the lock.

Daniel caught her hand before she could turn it.

“No. You're going to explain yourself first.””

Vanessa looked at his fingers around her wrist.

“You're hurting me.””

He released her immediately.

“I haven't touched you hard enough to leave a mark. Don't change the subject.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You always do this.””

“Do what?””

“Decide I'm guilty before you know the facts.””

Daniel stared at her.

“I watched you raise a strap over my eight-year-old son. I watched my baby daughter hide beneath a table. You have spent the last twenty minutes threatening, blaming, and lying. So forgive me if I'm not feeling particularly generous.””

Vanessa flinched.

Then her expression hardened into something he had never seen before.

“You think you're a wonderful father because you pay the bills and buy them toys. But where were you when Laura was falling apart?””

The words struck him harder than he expected.

Daniel's voice dropped.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa continued, almost as if she had been waiting years to speak.

“You were at the office. You were on planes. You were building an empire while your wife sat alone in that house, crying until she could barely breathe.””

“That doesn't give you the right to hurt my children.””

“No. But it explains why I was there.””

Daniel looked toward Ethan.

His son had gone very still.

“Take Sophie into the kitchen,” Daniel told him.

“Stay there with the nanny if she's home. Don't let Vanessa come near you.””

Ethan nodded.

Then he stopped.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Don't let her close the window.””

Daniel frowned.

“What window?””

But Ethan had already hurried away with Sophie in his arms.

Vanessa watched them disappear.

“You should listen to him,” she said quietly.

Daniel turned back.

“Open the door.””

She inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

When the door swung inward, a stale scent of paper, cedar, and Laura's old perfume drifted into the hallway.

Daniel stepped inside.

Everything looked almost exactly as he remembered it. The curtains were drawn. The bookshelves were undisturbed. A framed photograph of Laura and Ethan stood on the desk.

But the desk drawers were open.

Daniel frowned.

“I left those closed.””

Vanessa remained in the doorway.

“You haven't been in here for months.””

“That doesn't mean I forgot how I left my own wife's study.””

He approached the desk.

A small wooden box sat beside the photograph. It had not been there before.

Daniel opened it.

Inside lay a gold wedding ring, two folded letters, and a flash drive.

He picked up the first letter.

The envelope bore his name in Laura's handwriting.

Daniel — if anything happens to me, please don't let anyone tell you what to believe about our children.

His fingers began to tremble.

He opened the letter.

I know you think I'm exhausted. I know you think I need rest. But something is wrong, and I don't know whom to trust.

Daniel read the next lines twice.

I've been receiving calls from someone who claims to know things about our family. She says she can help us. I was foolish enough to meet her.

The letter ended abruptly.

There was no signature.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You knew Laura was afraid of someone.””

Vanessa nodded once.

“She was frightened near the end.””

“Of whom?””

Vanessa's gaze moved to the photograph on the desk.

“Me.””

Daniel's stomach turned.

“You're telling me Laura was afraid of you before the accident?””

“Yes.””

“And you still came into my life?””

“I didn't plan to fall in love with you.””

“You don't get to use love as an excuse.””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel picked up the second letter.

This one was addressed to Ethan.

It was shorter, written in Laura's familiar handwriting, with several words crossed out.

My brave boy, if you ever have to protect your sister, remember that it isn't your job to be the grown-up. Find someone who will listen. Don't keep secrets just because someone tells you it will protect the family.

Daniel's eyes burned.

He pictured his son standing between Sophie and Vanessa, taking blows meant to frighten a toddler into silence.

He had been gone too long.

He had trusted too easily.

And now his children were carrying a burden their mother had specifically begged him not to leave them with.

“Why did you keep these letters from me?”” he demanded.

Vanessa stepped inside and closed the door.

“Because you would have sent me away.””

“You should have been sent away.””

“I had nowhere to go.””

“That was never my responsibility.””

She looked at him sharply.

“You promised me you would take care of me.””

“I married you because I believed you loved me. I never promised you could frighten my children.””

Vanessa's face twisted.

“You don't understand what Laura did.””

“Then tell me.””

“She wasn't the woman you thought she was.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“Don't you dare rewrite my wife's life to excuse your behavior.””

Vanessa moved toward the desk.

“She lied to you.””

“About what?””

“About Sophie.””

Daniel went still.

Vanessa reached for the flash drive, but he snatched it away.

“What about Sophie?””

“Laura was afraid of what would happen when you discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa's breathing grew shallow.

“She knew that Sophie wasn't—”

A loud crash sounded from the kitchen.

Daniel spun toward the door.

“Sophie?””

He ran into the hallway.

The nanny, Mrs. Brooks, stood beside the kitchen island with a shattered glass at her feet. Ethan was pressed against the cabinets, holding Sophie against his chest.

The toddler was screaming.

“What happened?”” Daniel demanded.

Mrs. Brooks looked terrified.

“Your wife came into the kitchen. She tried to take Sophie from Ethan.””

Daniel turned toward the study.

Vanessa was already walking toward them.

“I was trying to help!””

Ethan tightened his arms around his sister.

“No! You said you wouldn't take her!””

Vanessa stopped.

Daniel's voice thundered through the hallway.

“Take one more step, and I will call the police.””

Her eyes widened.

“You wouldn't.””

“Try me.””

She stared at him, then at the children.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that the man who had always given her the benefit of the doubt was gone.

Daniel took Sophie from Ethan and handed her to Mrs. Brooks.

“Please take both children to your room. Lock the door. Call me if either of them needs anything.””

Mrs. Brooks nodded and hurried away with Ethan following close behind.

Vanessa watched them go.

Then she turned back to Daniel.

“You think you can protect them from everything?””

“No,” he replied.

“But I can protect them from you.””

She laughed without humor.

“You still don't know what happened that night.””

“Then start talking.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears, but Daniel no longer knew whether they were real.

“I came here because Laura called me.””

“Why?””

“She wanted me to take Sophie.””

Daniel's heart lurched.

“Take her where?””

“Away from you.””

The words seemed to empty the air from the room.

Vanessa continued before he could speak.

“Laura believed you were going to lose custody of the children.””

“That's a lie.””

“Is it? You were barely home. You were working constantly. She was exhausted, depressed, and afraid that if something happened to her, Sophie would be left with strangers.””

“So she called you?””

“Yes.””

“Why you?””

Vanessa looked down at the silver key in her hand.

“Because I was the only person she trusted with the secret.””

Daniel felt sick.

“What secret?””

Vanessa stepped closer, lowering her voice.

“Sophie isn't the child you think she is.””

He stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, Daniel's phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.

He almost ignored it.

Then a message arrived.

*Mr. Carter, my name is Dr. Martin Hayes.

I treated Laura the night of her accident. I need to speak with you immediately.*

A second message followed.

Your wife has been lying about the clinic records. Sophie was never my patient.

Daniel looked up at Vanessa.

Her face had turned white.

He read the final message.

And there is something else you must know about the accident. Laura was alive when the ambulance arrived, and she gave us one name before she died.

Daniel's fingers went numb.

He typed a single question.

Whose name?

The reply came almost immediately.

Vanessa.

Across the room, his wife whispered, “Daniel, please don't believe him.””

Then his phone rang.

And when Daniel answered, the doctor said six words that changed everything.

“Your wife wasn't the only woman there.””
