Amused

Chapter 4: The Night Dad Came Home Early

The door opened slowly.

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Dad stood there.

But he didn’t look like the Dad who left for his business trip five days earlier.

That Dad had smiled.

He had hugged me.

He had joked that he would bring me back a souvenir from the city.

This Dad looked exhausted.

His jacket was wrinkled.

His hair was messy.

There were dark circles under his eyes.

And he wasn’t looking at me.

He was looking at Amanda.

The room felt too small.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily ran.

“Daddy!””

She threw herself into his arms.

Dad caught her immediately.

“Hey, princess.””

His voice cracked.

He hugged her tightly.

For a second, the fear disappeared.

Because Dad was home.

He was really home.

Then Lily pulled away.

“Daddy, Mom was mean to Ethan.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Just for a second.

Like he had been expecting those words.

“I know.””

My stomach dropped.

“You know?””

Dad looked at me.

And when our eyes met, I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Not anger.

Not surprise.

Regret.

“Ethan.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew?””

He swallowed.

“I suspected.””

Amanda let out a sharp laugh.

“Of course.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stood near the desk, arms crossed.

“So this was your plan?””

Dad’s expression hardened.

“My plan was to make sure my son was safe.””

“By spying on me?””

“By protecting him.””

Amanda shook her head.

“You recorded me.””

“I recorded what happened in my own house.””

“You don’t trust me.””

Dad looked at her.

“Should I?””

The question was quiet.

But it hurt more than yelling.

Amanda looked away.

Lily held onto Dad’s hand.

“Daddy, why did Mom say Ethan isn’t my brother?””

Dad looked at Lily.

Then at me.

His face softened.

“Because she was wrong.””

Amanda’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Turn them against me.””

Dad almost looked surprised.

“Turn them against you?””

He pointed toward the table.

“The first night I’m gone, you give my son instant noodles while you and Lily eat his favorite dinner.””

Amanda crossed her arms.

“He had food.””

Dad stared at her.

“He’s seven.””

“He wasn’t starving.””

“No,” Dad said.

“He was learning that he didn’t matter.””

The words hit me.

Because that was exactly how it felt.

Amanda looked annoyed.

“You’re being dramatic.””

Dad laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“Dramatic?””

He reached into his pocket.

Then placed his phone on the desk.

“I heard the recording.””

Amanda went still.

The device in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

“You listened?””

Dad nodded.

“Every word.””

Amanda’s face changed.

“What else did you hear?””

Dad didn’t answer immediately.

And that silence told me everything.

There was more.

A lot more.

I looked between them.

“Dad?””

He turned toward me.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

He walked closer.

“You should never have been put in this position.””

“I can handle it.””

His eyes became wet.

“No, Ethan.””

He knelt down.

“You shouldn’t have to.””

That was when I realized something.

Dad wasn’t just angry.

He was hurt.

Because he had trusted someone.

Someone he had brought into our home.

Someone who had been sitting at this table with us.

Amanda looked away.

Then she said quietly:

“You still don’t know everything.””

Dad stood.

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

“Amanda.””

“You think I’m the villain because you found a recording.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“You took a letter from his mother.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked confused.

“What letter?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

Dad looked at me.

“Where did you get it?””

I held up the envelope.

“She gave it to me.””

Dad looked shocked.

“She?””

“Amanda.””

His face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Ethan, listen to me carefully.””

“What?””

“Did you read it?””

I nodded.

“Some of it.””

Dad looked at Amanda.

“What did you do?””

Amanda laughed.

“You’re afraid of a piece of paper?””

“I’m afraid of what you’re willing to do.””

I looked at Dad.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

The question came out smaller than I wanted.

Everyone became quiet.

Dad looked at me.

“Tell you what?””

“The truth.””

He didn’t answer.

That hurt.

Because I wanted him to say something.

Anything.

Instead, he looked away.

“You were too young.””

“I’m seven.””

“I know.””

“I’m not a baby.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Then why did everyone decide what I could know?””

The words stayed in the room.

Even Amanda looked at me differently.

Because maybe for the first time, she saw that I wasn’t just a child who could be controlled.

Dad sat on the edge of the bed.

“You’re right.””

I didn’t expect that.

“I should have told you more.””

“About Mom?””

He nodded slowly.

“About everything.””

Lily sat beside me.

“Who is Ethan’s mom?””

Dad looked at the floor.

“A woman who loved him very much.””

“Then why did she leave?””

Dad’s hands tightened.

“She didn’t.””

The answer shocked me.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother didn’t leave you.””

My heart raced.

“But you said…”

“I know what I said.””

“Why?””

Dad looked toward Amanda.

And for a second, I saw years of pain on his face.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Amanda shook her head.

“No. You were protecting yourself.””

Dad looked at her.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

She stepped forward.

“You were afraid.””

Dad didn’t deny it.

Amanda continued.

“You were afraid people would find out what happened.””

“What happened?”” Lily asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Dad.

“Tell me.””

He stayed silent.

Then the black device in my hand made a sound.

A small click.

Everyone looked at it.

The red light turned solid.

A new recording had been triggered.

Dad stared at it.

“When did that start?””

“I don’t know.””

He picked it up carefully.

A voice came through.

Amanda’s voice.

But it wasn’t from tonight.

It sounded older.

Angrier.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Then another voice.

A woman’s voice.

My mother.

“You can’t keep my son from me forever.””

My entire body froze.

Mom.

That was Mom.

Dad looked at the device.

His face went pale.

Amanda whispered:

“No.””

The recording continued.

Amanda’s voice came through again.

“You should have walked away when I gave you the chance.””

Mom answered:

“I’m not afraid of you anymore.””

Then a sound.

A door slamming.

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Lily looked at Amanda.

“You did that?””

Amanda shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was different.

Less confident.

More desperate.

Dad picked up his phone.

“You need to leave.””

Amanda stared at him.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“You’re throwing me out?””

“I’m making sure my children are safe.””

A strange smile appeared on Amanda’s face.

Not happiness.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

“You still think this is about me.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Amanda looked at me.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Dad.

“Your son’s little device didn’t just record me.””

She walked toward the door.

“Did it?””

Dad went still.

I felt cold.

“What are you talking about?””

Amanda smiled.

For the first time all night, she looked like she knew something we didn’t.

“Ask your father what happened the night he gave Ethan that device.””

Dad’s expression changed.

Amanda opened the bedroom door.

Before leaving, she whispered:

“Because the person he’s been trying to protect Ethan from…”

She looked directly at me.

“…might not be the person you think.””

The door closed.

Dad stood frozen.

Lily looked up at him.

“Daddy?””

But Dad didn’t answer.

He was staring at the black device.

And then, slowly, he said something that made my heart sink.

“She wasn’t supposed to know that recording existed.””

I looked at him.

“What recording?””

Dad looked at me.

His face was full of fear.

“Ethan…”

A long silence passed.

Then he whispered:

“There’s another voice on that device.””

I held my breath.

“Whose?””

Dad looked toward the closed door.

May you like

Then back at me.

“The person who caused your mother to disappear.””
