The Key She Hid From Me / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8: The Last Secret

The next morning, Nia disappeared.

Her car was gone.

Her phone went straight to voicemail.

At first, I thought she left because she couldn’t face me.

Then Daniel called.

“She contacted me.””

My heart jumped.

“What happened?””

“She wants to meet.””

“Where?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Marcus, she said she needs to tell you something before Andre does.””

I drove to the old park where Nia and I used to walk before we bought our house.

The place where we talked about having children.

The place where she told me she wanted a family.

She was sitting on a bench.

Older.

Tired.

Broken.

I stood a few feet away.

“Talk.””

She nodded.

“I know you hate me.””

“I don’t know what I feel.””

“That’s fair.””

The wind moved through the trees.

She took a deep breath.

“Ava isn’t the only thing Andre lied about.””

I waited.

“He didn’t come back because of me.””

“What?””

“He came back because of you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“He knew who you were.””

“How?””

“Your company.””

I stared.

“My company?””

She nodded.

“Seven years ago, before I met you, Andre was investigated for fraud.””

I felt cold.

“He lost everything.””

“And?””

“And your company was one of the companies that reported him.””

I remembered.

A contractor.

A complaint.

A man accused of stealing deposits from customers.

A name.

Andre.

But I never connected it.

“He blamed me?””

“He blamed anyone who stood against him.””

I sat down.

“So the affair…”

“He wanted access.””

The words made me sick.

“He wanted revenge.””

Nia nodded.

“I didn’t know.””

“When did you realize?””

She cried.

“When he started asking about your finances.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

“I was scared.””

Again.

Always scared.

But this time I saw something else.

Shame.

“I tried to leave him.””

“And?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

She looked away.

“Ava.””

My heart stopped.

“He said if I told you, he would tell everyone she wasn’t yours.””

I closed my eyes.

“So you protected yourself.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I protected her.””

The answer hurt because I believed she meant it.

But it didn’t erase what happened.

A car passed on the road.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“Why tell me now?””

“Because I found something.””

She handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a flash drive.

“What is this?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

“Everything.””

That night, Daniel opened the files.

There were recordings.

Messages.

Documents.

Andre had been planning for months.

The money.

The affair.

The custody claim.

All of it.

But then one file caught my attention.

A recording.

The date was two months before Andre returned to our house.

I clicked play.

Andre’s voice filled the room.

“She’ll believe whatever I tell her.””

Another voice answered.

A woman.

Elena.

“You’re taking this too far.””

Andre laughed.

“I’m taking back what was stolen.””

Elena said:

“You’re destroying a child’s family.””

Andre replied:

“Her family was never real.””

My stomach turned.

Then he said something that made the room go silent.

“Once Marcus loses Ava, he loses everything.””

Daniel paused the recording.

“Marcus.””

I looked at him.

“He was never trying to be her father.””

The truth settled.

Andre didn’t want Ava.

He wanted me to lose her.

The next morning, Daniel filed the emergency paperwork.

And before we left his office, my phone rang.

Ava’s school.

I answered immediately.

A woman’s voice said:

“Mr. Hale, there’s a problem.””

My heart dropped.

“What happened?””

“Someone came to pick up Ava.””

I stood.

“Who?””

The woman hesitated.

Then said:

“He said he was her biological father.””
