Amused

Chapter 6: The Woman Behind the Warning

The message from the unknown number stayed on my screen for nearly a minute.

Your mother-in-law didn't help Daniel steal your money. She was trying to stop him—and he knows you have the evidence now.

I read it again.

Then I typed:

Who are you?

The typing indicator appeared almost immediately.

Someone who was in that house long before you realized what was happening.

My heart tightened.

Tell me your name.

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then nothing.

Jules came into the room carrying two mugs of coffee.

“Bad news?””

“I don't know.””

I handed her the phone.

She read the exchange.

“That's either very useful or incredibly creepy.””

“Probably both.””

My phone buzzed.

This time, it was a photograph.

A grainy image showed Evelyn sitting alone in a hospital corridor. She was wearing the same pale blue cardigan she had worn the day of her procedure nearly two years earlier.

Beside her was a folder.

On top of it, in large black letters, was the name *Carter Development*.

Jules leaned closer.

“When was this?””

I recognized the corridor immediately.

“That's St. Mary's.””

“And the person who took the photo?””

“I don't know.””

Another message appeared.

Look at the clock.

I zoomed in.

11:42 a.m.

The photograph had been taken on the same day I had spent hours beside Evelyn at the hospital.

I remembered that day vividly.

Daniel had arrived late, apologized, and told me he had been delayed at the office.

But if the photograph was real, someone had been watching Evelyn before Daniel arrived.

“Why would anyone photograph her at the hospital?”” Jules asked.

“I don't know.””

My phone rang.

It was Olivia.

“Do you have a minute?””

“Yes.””

“I received something overnight from the lender.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“They've identified the phone number ending in 7729. It was registered to Vanessa Carter.””

“I know.””

“There is more. The number was used to authenticate three separate documents.””

I sat down.

“Three?””

“The home-equity guarantee. The business credit line. And a transfer authorization.””

“To where?””

“That's the problem. The transfer authorization was submitted to a holding account connected to Northstar Advisory.””

“So Daniel moved my money into his own company.””

“Possibly. But the account's current beneficiary isn't Daniel.””

“Who is it?””

Olivia paused.

“Evelyn Carter.””

I closed my eyes.

The mystery was becoming a maze.

“If Evelyn was trying to stop him, why does her name keep appearing?””

“That is exactly what we need to determine.””

“What should I do?””

“Nothing impulsive. I'm meeting the lender's investigators this afternoon. I want you there because the disputed signatures are yours.””

“I'll come.””

“Bring every original document you have. And Nora?””

“Yes?””

“If anyone contacts you asking you to sign anything, don't.””

“I won't.””

After the call ended, Jules looked at me.

“You're going to the bank?””

“Yes.””

“Then I'm coming.””

At noon, I met Olivia in a conference room overlooking downtown. Two investigators from the lender were already there.

One was a gray-haired man named Robert Hayes. The other was a woman named Priya Shah, who introduced herself as a fraud analyst.

Robert placed three folders on the table.

“We have concerns about the authentication process,” he said.

“Because the phone number wasn't mine?””

“That is one concern.””

He opened the first folder.

“The documents were submitted electronically. The identity verification was completed using a phone registered to Ms. Vanessa Carter.””

“Daniel's sister.””

“Yes.””

Priya slid a second document toward me.

“The device used to access the verification portal was located at a property associated with Carter Development.””

I stared at the screen.

“Daniel's office?””

“Not exactly.””

She enlarged the map.

“The location data places the device within approximately fifty yards of the company's secondary warehouse.””

Mara had told me Daniel moved assets through accounts I had never heard of.

The warehouse was where he stored building materials.

“What happened there?””

“We don't know yet.””

Robert opened the third folder.

“This is where it gets unusual.””

Inside was a scanned copy of a handwritten letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably Evelyn's.

I recognized it from birthday cards and Christmas notes.

The letter was addressed to the lender.

I am concerned that my son has used my identity without my consent. I have not authorized any transfer of funds from accounts held in my name.

I looked up.

“When was this sent?””

“Four months ago.””

My breath caught.

Four months ago.

Before the home-equity loan.

Before Daniel's final demand.

Before the dinner.

“Why didn't the bank contact me?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“Because the letter was not attached to your loan file. It was associated with a separate account.””

“What account?””

“The holding account receiving transfers from Northstar.””

I stared at Olivia.

She was reading the letter again.

“Did Evelyn report Daniel?”” I asked.

Priya nodded.

“She appears to have raised concerns repeatedly.””

“Then why is her name on the documents?””

“That remains under investigation.””

I thought of Evelyn at dinner.

Her cold expression.

Her words.

She needs to learn respect.

If she had been trying to stop Daniel, why had she humiliated me?

Unless she hadn't.

Unless the woman at that table wasn't simply defending her son.

Unless she was trying to force me out.

The thought came suddenly.

I sat straighter.

“What if she knew he was going to hurt me?””

Olivia looked at me.

“Explain.””

“The dinner. She knew Daniel was angry. She knew I was there. She knew he was going to demand an apology.””

“That's not enough to establish intent.””

“I know.””

I looked at the photograph from the hospital.

“But maybe she wanted me to leave before something worse happened.””

Jules frowned.

“You're saying she deliberately pushed you out of the house?””

“Maybe.””

Robert interrupted gently.

“There is one more item.””

He opened another folder.

“This was submitted by Evelyn six weeks ago.””

A bank statement.

The account was hers.

The transactions showed repeated deposits from Northstar Advisory.

But beside every deposit was a corresponding withdrawal.

Every dollar had been transferred to a charity called *Haven House*.

I recognized the name.

It was a women's shelter.

I looked at Olivia.

“She wasn't keeping the money.””

“No,” Olivia said.

“She was moving it somewhere Daniel couldn't reach.””

Robert nodded.

“That's our current theory.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Nora?””

It was Evelyn.

I stood.

“How did you get this number?””

“Daniel showed me your messages.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Why are you calling?””

Her voice cracked.

“Because you're in danger.””

I looked at Olivia.

“From Daniel?””

“From everyone around him.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Silence.

“Mom,” I said quietly, using the name I hadn't called her in months, “did you help Daniel forge my signature?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the loans?””

“Yes.””

“Did you help him move money?””

“No.””

“Then why is your name everywhere?””

Her breathing became uneven.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I gripped the phone.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Daniel was watching everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“He put a tracker on your car.””

The room seemed to disappear.

“What?””

“I found it three weeks ago.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because he knew I had found it.””

I couldn't speak.

Evelyn whispered, “Nora, listen carefully. Don't go home. Don't trust Vanessa. And don't believe anything Daniel tells you about your father.””

My chest tightened.

“What does my father have to do with this?””

There was a long silence.

Then Evelyn said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“Your father knew Daniel before you ever met him.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Olivia stepped closer.

“What did she say?””

I looked up.

“My father knew Daniel.””

May you like

Jules's face went pale.

And somewhere across the city, I realized, Daniel had been preparing for the possibility that I would eventually discover why.
