Chapter 4: The Man From Her Past

Adeline had spent eleven days believing she was running away from something.

She had never imagined she was running toward it.

The man standing at the entrance of the Marchetti estate looked nothing like the father she remembered.

The memory in her mind was of warm hands, a worn leather jacket, and a voice that used to promise her everything would be okay.

The man before her was older.

Colder.

His dark coat was expensive, his silver hair carefully combed back, and his expression carried the kind of confidence belonging to someone who had never been forced to apologize.

Adeline stood frozen beside Enzo.

The entire entrance hall had gone silent.

Even the servants who usually moved like shadows had stopped.

The man’s eyes found hers immediately.

“Adeline.””

Her name sounded strange coming from him.

Like something buried being dragged back into the light.

She swallowed.

“Who are you?””

A flicker of emotion crossed his face.

Pain.

Or guilt.

She couldn’t tell.

“You really don’t remember me?””

Adeline’s hands curled into fists.

“I asked who you are.””

Enzo remained beside her, watching carefully.

The man looked at him.

“You didn’t tell her?””

Enzo’s jaw tightened.

“I was waiting for the truth from you.””

A cold silence followed.

The man gave a bitter smile.

“Still protecting people from information they deserve to know.””

Adeline looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Neither answered.

That frightened her more than anything.

She had spent years learning how to survive alone.

She knew how to handle insults.

She knew how to handle unfair treatment.

But secrets?

Secrets were dangerous because they meant someone else had been controlling the story.

The man stepped closer.

“My name is Julian Croft.””

The name hit her like a sudden wave.

Croft.

Her surname.

Her father.

“No.””

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Julian’s expression changed.

“You do remember.””

“I remember my father.””

Her voice became sharper.

“My father died twelve years ago.””

The servants looked down.

Enzo’s eyes moved to Julian.

Julian said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Adeline’s breathing became uneven.

“What did you say?””

Julian looked at her.

“I let you believe that.””

The hall seemed to shrink.

“You let me believe my father was dead?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“Protect me?””

She stepped forward.

“From what?””

Julian looked at Enzo.

“From them.””

The answer made the air colder.

Adeline followed his gaze.

The Marchetti family.

Enzo noticed.

His expression hardened.

“Choose your words carefully.””

Julian didn’t seem afraid.

“I spent twenty years cleaning up the damage your family created.””

Enzo’s eyes narrowed.

“And yet you came here.””

“Because she was here.””

Adeline felt her stomach twist.

“Why?””

Julian looked at her.

“Because I failed you once.””

His voice lowered.

“And I won’t do it again.””

Before Adeline could respond, Camilla appeared at the top of the staircase.

She had changed from the night before.

No drunken smile.

No playful cruelty.

Only anger.

“What a touching reunion.””

Everyone looked up.

Camilla slowly descended.

“Father returning from the dead. A lost daughter discovering her family secrets.””

She smiled.

“Almost like a tragedy written for entertainment.””

Julian’s face hardened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“This is my family’s home.””

“No,” Enzo interrupted.

“This is mine.””

Camilla stopped.

For a moment, something passed between them.

Something deeper than an argument.

Something personal.

Adeline noticed.

And so did Julian.

“You still haven’t told her,” Julian said quietly.

Enzo’s expression changed.

“Enough.””

“Told me what?””

Adeline looked at Enzo.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody spoke.

That was when she realized something terrifying.

Everyone in the room knew more about her life than she did.

Julian reached into his coat and pulled out an envelope.

He held it toward her.

“This belongs to you.””

Adeline didn’t move.

“What is it?””

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His eyes met hers.

“Proof that your entire life was built on a lie.””

The words stayed between them.

A servant gasped quietly.

Enzo immediately looked toward the staff.

“Everyone leave.””

Nobody argued.

Within seconds, the hall emptied.

Only Adeline, Enzo, Julian, and Camilla remained.

Adeline stared at the envelope.

She wanted to refuse it.

She wanted to walk away.

But some part of her already knew.

The truth had been waiting for her.

Slowly, she took it.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger version of herself.

Maybe six years old.

Standing beside a woman she didn’t recognize.

The woman looked terrified.

On the back of the photograph were three words.

“Protect her, Julian.””

Adeline looked up.

“Who is she?””

Julian’s face changed.

“That is your mother.””

Her heart stopped.

“My mother died when I was a baby.””

“No.””

His voice cracked slightly.

“She disappeared.””

Adeline looked at Enzo.

“You knew?””

Enzo didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“You knew.””

His silence became unbearable.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know how much of your past was hidden from you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Enzo stepped closer.

“It isn’t.””

For the first time, Adeline saw regret in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Regret.

And somehow that hurt more.

Camilla suddenly laughed.

“You’re all pretending to care now?””

Everyone turned.

She leaned against the staircase railing.

“Interesting.””

Her gaze settled on Adeline.

“Do you want to know why your father disappeared?””

Julian’s expression changed.

“Camilla.””

But she continued.

“Because your father was involved in the same business that destroyed my family.””

Adeline looked at Julian.

“Is that true?””

Julian didn’t deny it.

“I did things I regret.””

“What things?””

The question came out quieter.

Julian looked away.

“Things that forced me to disappear.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Enzo looked down.

The number on the screen made his face change.

He answered.

“Speak.””

A voice came through.

Enzo listened.

Then his expression became unreadable.

“What?””

Adeline watched him.

“What happened?””

Enzo slowly lowered the phone.

“There was a break-in.””

Julian’s face went pale.

“Where?””

Enzo looked at him.

“The old Croft house.””

Adeline frowned.

“That house burned down years ago.””

Julian stared at her.

“No.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“It didn’t.””

A chill moved through the room.

“What does that mean?””

Julian looked toward the entrance doors.

“It means someone has been waiting there.””

May you like

He looked at Adeline.

“And they know you’re alive.””
