Chapter 8: The Mother Who Never Left
I stood in Robert’s office with the phone pressed against my ear, unable to form a single word.
Emily.
The name belonged to a chapter of my life I thought had ended before it began.
A name I had only seen on old paperwork.
A name attached to a tragedy I never questioned.
Because everyone had told me the same story.
Noah’s mother died.
Claire told me.
My family told me.
The hospital records told me.
I had mourned a woman I barely knew.
And now that woman was breathing on the other end of the phone.
“Mark?””
Her voice was shaking.
“I know this is impossible.””
I finally found my voice.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
“I can’t tell you that yet.””
My heart sank.
“Yet?””
“I need to know if I can trust you.””
The words hurt.
Not because they were unfair.
Because I understood them.
Everyone in this story had been afraid.
Everyone had been protecting themselves.
And somehow Noah had been the one paying for it.
“You called me.””
“Yes.””
“Why now?””
Another pause.
“Because I saw what Claire was trying to do.””
I looked at Robert.
He was watching me carefully.
“What did she try to do?””
“She tried to erase you from his life.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“She filed for custody.””
Emily went silent.
“She actually did it.””
“You knew?””
“I knew she was preparing.””
“How?””
“Because she contacted me.””
The room became still.
“She contacted you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily’s voice changed.
Anger.
Pain.
“She wanted me to disappear again.””
I closed my eyes.
“Emily, I need you to tell me everything.””
“I will.””
“Start with the beginning.””
She took a shaky breath.
“The first thing you need to know is that I never abandoned Noah.””
I sat down.
Because that sentence alone changed everything.
“Then why did everyone say you were gone?””
“Because Claire made sure everyone believed it.””
My jaw tightened.
“Claire said you died.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“I don’t know exactly.””
Emily hesitated.
“But I know she wanted me out of Noah’s life.””
I looked at Robert.
He silently mouthed:
“Put it on speaker.””
I did.
Emily continued.
“After Noah was born, I was sick.””
“What kind of sick?””
“Complications from the delivery.””
I frowned.
“Claire told me you had died.””
“I was hospitalized.””
The words hit me.
Not dead.
Hospitalized.
“Where?””
“Different hospital.””
“Why?””
“Because someone moved me.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
Emily was quiet.
Then:
“I don’t know.””
Robert leaned forward.
“Emily, this is Robert Carter. I’m Mark’s attorney.””
She paused.
“Attorney?””
“Yes.””
“Then Claire really did it.””
I looked at Robert.
“Did what?””
Emily’s voice became softer.
“She started the custody case.””
“Yes.””
“I knew she would eventually.””
“Why?””
“Because she was losing control.””
I felt anger rising.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Claire has spent years making sure Noah believed he belonged to her more than anyone else.””
My chest tightened.
The empty plate.
The words.
You are not one of them.
Suddenly, everything looked different.
“She told him he wasn’t hers.””
Emily gasped.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“She told him she cooks for her own children. She told him he wasn’t one of them.””
The silence on the phone was painful.
When Emily spoke again, her voice broke.
“She did that?””
“Yes.””
A long pause.
Then Emily whispered:
“That’s why I had to come back.””
Two hours later, I met Emily.
Not at her home.
Not somewhere private.
At a small coffee shop on the other side of town.
A place with people around.
A place where nobody could disappear.
I arrived early.
I told myself I was prepared.
I wasn’t.
When she walked through the door, I recognized her immediately.
Not because I remembered her.
Because I recognized Noah.
The same eyes.
The same nervous way of holding her hands.
The same expression of someone trying not to take up too much space.
She stopped when she saw me.
Neither of us moved.
Then she whispered:
“You look older.””
I almost laughed.
“You too.””
A small, sad smile appeared.
Then it disappeared.
“Can I sit?””
I nodded.
She sat across from me.
For a few seconds, we just looked at each other.
Two people connected by a child.
Two strangers who had both missed years they could never get back.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Emily nodded.
“When I found out I was pregnant, I knew there was a chance Noah’s father wasn’t you.””
I looked down.
“Because of Ethan.””
Her eyes widened.
“So you know.””
“I know about Ethan.””
She closed her eyes.
“And Daniel?””
I looked up.
“You know about Daniel too?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
“Because Claire told me.””
“Why would she tell you?””
Emily looked away.
“Because she needed someone to blame.””
“Explain.””
“She told me that if anyone found out about Noah’s paternity, she would lose everything.””
I stared.
“So she admitted it?””
“Not completely.””
“What did she say?””
“She said she had made mistakes.””
I almost smiled.
That phrase again.
“But she never told me who the father was.””
“Because she didn’t know.””
Emily looked at me.
“That’s what she wanted everyone to believe.””
“What do you mean?””
Emily leaned forward.
“Mark, Claire knew exactly who Noah’s father was.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
She looked down.
“Someone else.””
I stared.
“Someone else?””
“Yes.””
“Not Ethan?””
“No.””
“Not Daniel?””
“No.””
The room seemed to shrink.
“How many people are involved in this?””
Emily looked at me with sadness.
“More than you realize.””
I felt exhausted.
“Then why didn’t you come back?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I tried.””
That answer surprised me.
“What?””
“I tried to see Noah.””
“When?””
“Many times.””
I stared.
“Claire never told me.””
“I know.””
“How?””
“Because she told me you didn’t want me involved.””
My face changed.
“What?””
“She said you hated me.””
I felt something inside me snap.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
“You believed her?””
Emily looked down.
“I was weak.””
The honesty hurt.
But I respected it.
“She threatened me.””
“With what?””
“She said if I came near Noah, she would tell people I abandoned him.””
I looked away.
“She said nobody would believe me.””
“And you disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Emily wiped her eyes.
“Because I was afraid of losing the only chance I had left.””
“What chance?””
“To come back when I had proof.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What proof?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a folder.
And placed it on the table.
“I kept copies of everything.””
I opened it.
Hospital documents.
Original birth records.
Messages.
Photographs.
My hands stopped on one page.
A handwritten note.
The handwriting was familiar.
Too familiar.
I looked at Emily.
“Where did you get this?””
Her face turned pale.
“From Claire.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before she realized I had it.””
I read the note.
Only one sentence.
One sentence that made every piece fall into place.
*If Mark finds out the truth, he will take Noah and I will lose everything.*
I looked up.
“When did she write this?””
Emily’s voice was quiet.
“Six months ago.””
The same time.
The same moment everything started.
I flipped through the papers.
Then I saw another document.
A legal form.
A request.
A plan.
My blood ran cold.
Because this wasn’t just about custody.
It wasn’t about DNA.
It was about removing me.
Permanently.
Emily watched my face.
“She was never trying to prove you weren’t his father.””
I looked at her.
“What was she trying to do?””
Emily answered:
“She was trying to make sure nobody ever found out who really was.””
I stared at the documents.
“Who?””
Emily hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“The person who caused all of this.””
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
“Mark, where are you?””
“At a meeting.””
“With who?””
I looked at Emily.
Before I could answer, Robert continued.
“Don’t tell anyone yet, but I found the missing hospital records.””
My grip tightened.
“What records?””
“The original delivery file.””
“And?””
Silence.
Then Robert said:
“Mark, there is something impossible in that file.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What?””
His voice lowered.
“The hospital recorded two babies born that night.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Two boys.””
The coffee shop noise disappeared.
“Robert…”
“And only one of them was registered as Noah.””
I looked at Emily.
She was already crying.
Because she knew.
She had known this whole time.
And then Robert said the sentence that changed the entire story.
“Mark, Noah might not just have a hidden father.””
May you like
A pause.
“He might have a hidden twin brother.””
