Amused

Chapter 4: The Footage Nobody Was Supposed To See

The hallway outside the principal’s office had never felt so quiet.

Usually, Westbridge Elementary was full of noise.

Children laughing.

Teachers calling out names.

The sound of lockers opening and closing.

But that afternoon, every sound seemed distant.

Lily sat on a chair beside me, her violin case resting carefully on her lap. She hadn’t let go of it since Mr. Cole returned it to her.

Not because she thought someone would take it again.

Because she was afraid.

Afraid that if she put it down, the entire situation would somehow become real.

Across from us sat Amanda Whitmore.

She looked completely different from the woman who had stormed into the music room earlier.

Her confidence was still there.

But something underneath it had cracked.

She kept checking her phone.

Every few seconds.

Every notification made her shoulders tense.

Chloe sat beside her.

And for the first time since I had met the Whitmores, she and her mother were sitting apart.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

There was an invisible wall between them.

Principal Harris opened the office door.

“Mr. Cole, Mrs. Whitmore, Chloe, Lily, please come in.””

We entered.

The room was smaller than expected.

A wooden desk.

Several chairs.

A bookshelf filled with old school awards.

Nothing about it looked dramatic.

But everyone inside knew something serious was about to happen.

Principal Harris motioned for us to sit.

“I want to begin by saying that this meeting is not about punishing anyone before we understand what happened.””

Amanda immediately leaned forward.

“I agree completely.””

Her voice sounded calmer now.

Almost rehearsed.

“I only want fairness.””

Mr. Cole said nothing.

Principal Harris looked at him.

“Daniel, explain what happened.””

Mr. Cole folded his hands.

“This afternoon, Mrs. Whitmore entered the music room and demanded that Lily return the violin assigned to her.””

Amanda interrupted.

“Assigned incorrectly.””

Principal Harris raised a hand.

“Please let him finish.””

Amanda leaned back.

Mr. Cole continued.

“After reviewing the donation records, I explained that the violin belongs to the school music program. Mrs. Whitmore disagreed.””

“Because there was confusion,” Amanda said.

Mr. Cole looked at her.

“There was not.””

Principal Harris glanced between them.

“And the security footage?””

Mr. Cole nodded.

“That is why we are here.””

He looked uncomfortable.

“Before today, I didn’t realize the situation began earlier than the classroom incident.””

Amanda’s face became guarded.

“What does that mean?””

Principal Harris reached for a remote control.

“We reviewed the hallway camera outside the music room.””

She turned on the monitor.

The screen showed a recording from that morning.

The quality wasn’t perfect.

The image was slightly gray.

But everyone could recognize the hallway.

Students walking past.

Teachers carrying folders.

Then Amanda appeared.

She was standing outside the music room.

Alone.

Lily watched silently.

Then her expression changed.

Because on the screen, Amanda wasn’t walking into the room by accident.

She was waiting.

Principal Harris paused the video.

“Mrs. Whitmore, can you explain why you were outside the music room before your scheduled meeting time?””

Amanda crossed her arms.

“I wanted to speak with Mr. Cole.””

“About?””

“My daughter’s instrument.””

Mr. Cole looked confused.

“I never had a meeting scheduled with you.””

Amanda looked at him.

“I stopped by.””

Principal Harris pressed play.

The footage continued.

Amanda walked into the music room.

A few minutes later, she walked out.

Then something happened.

Something nobody expected.

She came back.

This time, she looked around the hallway.

Checking both directions.

Lily’s eyes widened.

“What is she doing?””

Nobody answered.

The footage continued.

Amanda opened the music room door again.

But this time, she wasn’t carrying anything.

A few minutes later, she came out holding a small notebook.

Chloe suddenly stood up.

“That’s mine.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” Principal Harris asked.

Chloe pointed at the screen.

“The notebook.””

She looked at her mother.

“That’s my practice notebook.””

Amanda’s face changed.

“It was on a table.””

Chloe stared.

“Why did you take it?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

Principal Harris paused the footage.

“Mrs. Whitmore?””

Amanda sighed.

“I was looking for information about my daughter’s progress.””

“In her private notebook?””

“She’s my child.””

“That does not answer the question.””

Amanda’s expression hardened.

“I was trying to help her.””

Chloe laughed quietly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“No.””

Amanda looked at her.

“What?””

“You were trying to prove something.””

The room became silent.

Chloe looked at the paused screen.

“You always do this.””

Amanda frowned.

“Do what?””

“Look for evidence that I’m the best.””

Her voice shook.

“But you don’t actually care about what I want.””

Amanda looked away.

“Chloe, not now.””

“No.””

Her daughter’s eyes filled with tears.

“Actually, now.””

She turned toward Principal Harris.

“She took my notebook because she wanted to compare my playing with Lily’s.””

Mr. Cole looked surprised.

“Is that true?””

Chloe nodded.

“My mom always compares me to other students.””

Amanda immediately responded.

“That is not what happened.””

Chloe looked at her.

“Then why did you read my notes?””

Amanda had no answer.

Principal Harris looked back at the footage.

“Continue.””

The video played again.

Amanda walked back toward the music room.

This time, she carried the notebook.

She entered.

A few minutes passed.

Then she came out.

Without the notebook.

Principal Harris stopped the video.

“Where is the notebook now?””

Everyone looked at Amanda.

She remained silent.

Then Chloe slowly reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a small notebook.

The same one.

“I found it in my mom’s office.””

She placed it on the desk.

Mr. Cole looked at her.

“You had it?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“This morning.””

A strange feeling filled the room.

Because suddenly, everyone understood.

Amanda hadn’t just learned about the violin.

She had been searching for information.

Planning something.

Principal Harris opened the notebook.

She flipped through the pages.

Most were normal.

Practice notes.

Song names.

Little reminders.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes narrowed.

“What is this?””

Amanda looked nervous.

“What?””

Principal Harris turned the notebook around.

On one page was a list.

Several names.

Several dates.

And next to each name were comments.

Some positive.

Some cruel.

Lily saw her own name.

Her face changed.

“What does that say?””

Nobody answered.

Because the words were clear.

Next to Lily’s name was a sentence written in Amanda’s handwriting.

“Not the strongest player. Emotional appeal likely.””

Lily went completely still.

The room seemed to shrink.

Mr. Cole looked furious.

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

Amanda immediately stood.

“That’s not what it looks like.””

Principal Harris looked at her.

“Then explain.””

“I was analyzing the students.””

“For what purpose?””

Amanda hesitated.

“For Chloe.””

Chloe shook her head slowly.

“No.””

Amanda turned.

“I was trying to help you.””

“No.””

Chloe’s voice broke.

“You were trying to make sure I won.””

Amanda opened her mouth.

But nothing came out.

For once, she had no explanation.

Principal Harris closed the notebook.

“Mrs. Whitmore, this raises serious concerns.””

Amanda looked around.

The anger returned.

“So now I’m the problem?””

Mr. Cole answered quietly.

“No one said that.””

“You all think it.””

“No,” he said.

He looked at Lily.

“We think Lily was hurt.””

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Because Amanda had spent the entire day arguing about ownership.

But nobody had been talking about the child standing in front of them.

A child who had been accused.

A child who had cried.

A child who almost believed she didn’t deserve something she had earned.

Amanda grabbed her purse.

“I’m done with this.””

Principal Harris looked surprised.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we are not finished.””

“Yes, we are.””

She moved toward the door.

But before she reached it, Chloe spoke.

“Mom.””

Amanda stopped.

Her daughter looked at her.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

Amanda slowly turned.

Chloe took a deep breath.

“I wasn’t the one who told you Lily got the violin.””

A confused silence followed.

Amanda frowned.

“What?””

“I never told you.””

Chloe looked at Mr. Cole.

“I didn’t even know Lily had it until yesterday.””

Mr. Cole looked confused.

“Then how did your mother know?””

Chloe looked at the notebook.

Then at her mother.

“She didn’t find out from me.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

Because if Chloe wasn’t the source…

Someone else had told Amanda.

Someone who knew about the violin.

Someone who knew enough to make Amanda believe she had a claim.

Then Chloe said the words that changed the entire investigation.

“The person who told my mom was not a student.””

She looked directly at the principal.

“It was someone who works at this school.””

And suddenly, the problem was no longer just about an entitled mother.

It was about the person inside Westbridge Elementary who had helped her start the lie.
