Amused

Chapter 3: The Mother Who Came Back

For eleven years, I imagined what I would say if my mother ever came back.

I imagined screaming.

I imagined asking why I wasn’t enough.

I imagined walking away without looking back.

But when Rachel stood in front of me, older and more tired than the woman in my childhood memories, all I could do was stare.

Because the hardest part wasn’t seeing her again.

The hardest part was realizing she looked like someone who had been carrying pain too.

And I hated that.

I hated that after all these years, a small part of me still wanted to run into her arms.

A small part of me still wanted my mother.

“Emily,” she whispered.

My name sounded strange coming from her.

Like something from a life I no longer remembered.

My father moved toward her.

“Rachel.””

There was so much history in that one word.

Anger.

Regret.

Love.

Pain.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Rachel looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw Vanessa look powerless.

“No,” Rachel said quietly.

“I should have been here years ago.””

The room went silent.

Madison slowly stood.

She looked between her mother and Rachel, completely lost.

“What’s happening?””

Nobody answered her.

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

Like he knew this moment had been coming.

Like he had spent years running from it.

“Everyone sit down.””

Nobody moved.

Then Rachel walked into the kitchen.

Not confidently.

Not like she owned the place.

Like she was entering somewhere she no longer belonged.

She stopped beside the table.

Her eyes landed on the empty hanger I had carried downstairs.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You already know.””

Her eyes moved to Vanessa.

And that was enough.

Rachel knew.

Vanessa looked away.

My heart started beating faster.

“How does everyone know things except me?””

My voice cracked.

“How am I always the last person to find out what’s happening in my own life?””

My father looked at me.

“Emily—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I want the truth.””

Rachel nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

She pulled out a chair.

“Your whole life, people have been making decisions for you. You deserve to hear it directly.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“From you?””

Rachel looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room became cold.

“Because I made mistakes.””

My chest tightened.

I expected her to deny everything.

To blame someone else.

But she didn’t.

“I left,” Rachel said.

My fingers curled around the edge of the chair.

“I know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No, Emily. You know the version they gave you.””

I looked at my father.

Then Vanessa.

Neither of them spoke.

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“When you were ten, your father and I were struggling.””

I almost laughed.

“Struggling?””

I looked at her.

“You disappeared.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes.””

That honesty hurt more than an excuse would have.

“I was struggling with things I didn’t know how to handle. Your father and I were fighting constantly. But before I left, I discovered something.””

She looked at Vanessa.

My stepmother’s face tightened.

“What did you discover?””

Rachel’s eyes hardened.

“That Vanessa had been manipulating everyone around her.””

Vanessa immediately stood.

“That’s a lie.””

Rachel didn’t look away.

“Is it?””

My father sat frozen.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Rachel…”

“No.””

Rachel’s voice trembled.

“But she needs to know.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t get to come back after eleven years and rewrite everything.””

Rachel’s expression changed.

“I’m not rewriting anything.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a folder.

My stomach dropped.

“What is that?””

She placed it on the table.

“Proof.””

Nobody moved.

The word felt heavy.

Proof.

Of what?

I looked at the folder.

There was my name written on the front.

*Emily Carter.*

My hands went cold.

“Why does she have a file with my name?””

My father looked away.

That was when I knew.

He knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“You knew about this?””

I asked him quietly.

He looked at me.

“I knew Rachel had documents.””

“Documents about me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was an answer.

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

School records.

Notes.

Screenshots.

Things from years ago.

My eyes scanned the first page.

Then stopped.

It was an email.

From Vanessa.

To my father.

The date was from when I was fourteen.

*Daniel, Emily is becoming difficult. She needs stricter boundaries before she becomes spoiled.*

My hands shook.

I looked at the next one.

*She needs to understand Madison comes first sometimes. Madison has more pressure right now.*

Another.

*Don’t let Emily manipulate you with tears. She knows exactly what she’s doing.*

My throat tightened.

I looked up.

“You said I was manipulating you?””

Vanessa’s face turned red.

“That’s not the full context.””

“Then what is the context?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rachel spoke softly.

“That was how it started.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

“She slowly convinced Daniel that you were the difficult child.””

My father flinched.

“Rachel.””

“But it was true.””

He looked at her.

She shook her head.

“No. It was convenient.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My father looked down.

Because somewhere inside him, he knew.

Rachel continued.

“She told you Emily was jealous of Madison.””

She looked at me.

“She told him you hated your sister.””

I stared at Madison.

Madison looked away.

“She told him you were attention-seeking.””

My eyes burned.

All those years.

All those moments where I questioned myself.

All those nights I wondered why being good never seemed enough.

It wasn’t because I was imagining things.

Someone had been shaping the way everyone saw me.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re acting like I ruined her life.””

Rachel looked at her.

“You convinced a father not to trust his own daughter.””

Silence.

My father stood suddenly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Everyone looked at him.

His voice was directed at Vanessa.

“Why didn’t you tell me any of this?””

Vanessa’s expression softened.

A familiar expression.

The one she used whenever she wanted sympathy.

“Because I was trying to protect this family.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Protect?””

She turned toward me.

“Yes.””

“By lying?””

“By keeping peace.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“By making me the problem.””

Madison whispered:

“Mom…”

Vanessa looked at her sharply.

“What?””

Madison looked terrified.

“I didn’t know you did all that.””

Vanessa stared at her.

And something inside me broke.

Because Madison wasn’t defending her.

For the first time, Madison looked like she was seeing her mother clearly too.

My father sat back down.

“I need to understand something.””

Everyone looked at him.

“Why?””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“Why would you do this?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But it was enough.

The perfect mask slipped.

“You want to know why?””

Her voice became colder.

“Because I watched everyone love Emily.””

The room froze.

She laughed once.

A small, bitter sound.

“Even when she was difficult. Even when she complained. Even when she pushed you away, Daniel always chose her.””

My father stared.

“That’s not true.””

“Isn’t it?””

Vanessa pointed toward me.

“She was your first child. Your favorite memory. Your connection to Rachel.””

I felt sick.

“So you punished me because you were jealous?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, she didn’t answer.

Then she said:

“I wanted you to understand what it felt like.””

Nobody moved.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You wanted a ten-year-old child to understand your pain?””

Her silence was enough.

The room felt like it was collapsing.

Then my phone buzzed.

I looked down.

A message from Lily.

*Emily, where are you? The ceremony starts soon. Everyone is asking for you.*

I had completely forgotten.

Graduation.

The day that was supposed to belong to me.

I looked at my family.

At my father.

At my mother.

At Madison.

At Vanessa.

Eleven years of secrets had exploded in one morning.

And somehow, I still had to walk across a stage and smile.

I grabbed my bag.

“I’m leaving.””

My father stood.

“Emily, wait.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Please.””

I looked at him.

The man who had loved me.

The man who had failed me.

“I spent years waiting for you to see me.””

His eyes filled.

“And now that you finally do…”

I swallowed.

“I don’t know what to do with that.””

I turned toward the door.

Before I could open it, Rachel spoke.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I slowly turned around.

Her face was full of fear.

Not sadness.

Fear.

“What?””

She looked at the folder.

Then at my father.

Then back at me.

“The dress wasn’t destroyed because Madison wanted to hurt you.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you saying?””

May you like

Rachel whispered:

“Your dress was burned because someone was trying to destroy what was hidden inside it.””
