Amused

Chapter 6: The Brother Who Came Back

The man standing in my doorway smiled like he had been invited inside.

Like he belonged there.

Like he hadn't just walked into my home without permission and turned my entire world upside down.

But the thing that scared me most wasn't him.

It was Luca's reaction.

I had seen Luca angry.

I had seen him frustrated.

I had seen him exhausted.

But I had never seen him afraid.

Not until now.

"Antonio.""

Luca said the name like it carried a warning.

The stranger tilted his head.

"That's all I get?""

His eyes moved toward me.

A slow, unsettling smile appeared.

"After all these years, I expected a warmer welcome.""

I stepped back.

My hand instinctively moved over my stomach.

Luca noticed immediately.

He shifted closer to me.

A protective movement.

One I would have found comforting once.

Now it only reminded me how much I didn't know.

"Who is he?"" I whispered.

Luca didn't look away from Antonio.

"My cousin.""

Antonio laughed softly.

"Technically.""

The single word made Luca's expression harden.

"Leave.""

Antonio looked around my apartment.

The small living room.

The simple furniture.

The baby books stacked beside the couch.

Then he looked back at Luca.

"She really has no idea, does she?""

My heart tightened.

"Know what?""

Nobody answered.

I looked between them.

"Know what?""

Antonio smiled.

"Everything.""

Luca's voice became cold.

"Don't.""

"Don't what?""

Antonio stepped farther inside.

"Tell your wife the truth?""

The word wife hung in the air.

Luca looked at me.

I noticed the pain in his eyes.

Because technically, I was still his wife until the divorce was finalized.

But emotionally?

We had been strangers for months.

"Antonio," Luca warned.

The man ignored him.

"You should ask him about Marco.""

My stomach dropped.

I already knew that name.

Too well now.

"Marco is dead," I said.

Antonio smiled.

"Is he?""

Luca moved forward.

"Enough.""

Antonio looked amused.

"You always did this.""

"Did what?""

"Played the hero.""

The room became tense.

"You think hiding the truth makes you noble.""

Luca's fists tightened.

"You don't know what you're talking about.""

"No?""

Antonio looked at me.

"Ask him where he was the night Marco disappeared.""

I turned toward Luca.

The question formed before I could stop it.

"Where were you?""

Luca looked at me.

And that hesitation told me everything.

"You were there.""

His silence was enough.

"You were there," I repeated.

Antonio smiled.

"There she is.""

"Shut up.""

The anger in Luca's voice finally broke through.

Not controlled.

Not calculated.

Real.

Antonio only laughed.

"You know what's funny?""

He walked closer.

"Everyone thinks Luca is the cold one.""

His eyes stayed on me.

"But Marco was the only one who ever understood what he was capable of.""

I felt a chill.

"Luca?""

He looked at me.

"Don't listen to him.""

"Then tell me.""

My voice shook.

"Tell me what happened.""

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, Luca spoke.

"Three years ago, Marco found evidence that someone inside the family was laundering money through the company.""

Antonio's smile faded slightly.

"He came to me first.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because he trusted me.""

Antonio laughed.

"That's what he thought.""

Luca ignored him.

"Marco wanted to expose everyone involved.""

"And?""

Luca looked down.

"And I told him to wait.""

"Why?""

"Because I needed proof.""

Antonio crossed his arms.

"No.""

His voice was sharper.

"You needed control.""

Luca looked at him.

"Don't.""

"That's always been your problem, Luca.""

Antonio stepped closer.

"You think because you mean well, everything you do becomes justified.""

The words hit harder than they should have.

Because they sounded familiar.

Because they sounded like the excuse Luca had given me.

Protection.

Control.

Deciding what someone else should know.

I looked at Luca.

"Is that true?""

His face changed.

"Isabella—"

"Did you tell Marco to wait?""

"Yes.""

"And then he disappeared?""

His silence answered.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because I thought Luca killed his brother.

I didn't.

But because once again, I was standing in front of a man who had hidden the truth from me.

Again.

"How long were you planning to keep this from me?""

Luca looked devastated.

"I wasn't.""

"But you did.""

"I was trying to find answers.""

"Without me.""

His expression fell.

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

Antonio watched us like he was enjoying every second.

"You see?""

He said quietly.

"Nothing has changed.""

Luca turned toward him.

"You came here for something.""

Antonio smiled.

"Smart.""

"Why?""

Antonio reached into his coat.

Luca immediately stepped forward.

I froze.

But Antonio only pulled out a small envelope.

He placed it on the table.

"Because Marco wanted Isabella to have this.""

My heart stopped.

"Marco?""

Luca looked at the envelope.

"What is that?""

Antonio smiled.

"Ask yourself.""

He looked at Luca.

"Why would Marco leave something for your wife instead of you?""

Nobody moved.

The question hung there.

Because it was the right question.

Why me?

Why would Marco trust me?

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written across it.

Not Luca's.

Mine.

My fingers trembled.

"Open it," Antonio said.

Luca immediately shook his head.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because we don't know what's inside.""

Antonio laughed.

"There it is again.""

He looked at me.

"The man who decides what's best for you.""

That sentence hit too close.

I reached for the envelope.

Luca said my name.

"Isabella.""

I stopped.

Not because he ordered me.

Because of the fear in his voice.

"Are you afraid of what's inside?""

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My breath caught.

It was taken years ago.

Before I knew Luca.

Before I became Isabella Moretti.

The picture showed a young woman standing beside Marco.

I didn't recognize him at first.

He was younger.

Smiling.

Alive.

But the woman beside him...

I knew her.

My blood ran cold.

"Vanessa.""

Luca stared at the photograph.

"What?""

I turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

One sentence.

*She wasn't trying to steal Luca from you. She was trying to get close to what Luca was hiding.*

I looked up.

Antonio was gone.

The apartment door was open.

He had disappeared while we were distracted.

"Luca.""

He didn't respond.

He was staring at the photograph.

"What is it?""

His face had changed.

Like he had finally seen something he didn't want to see.

"Isabella...""

"What?""

He looked at me.

"Marco wasn't investigating my company.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then what was he investigating?""

Luca picked up the photograph with shaking hands.

May you like

And then he said something that made every piece of my life fall apart.

"He was investigating me.""
