Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in Rachel’s Words

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

*She was already watching our family before you ever knew her name.*

My hands trembled around the letter.

For years, I had replayed the day I met Vanessa.

The coffee shop.

The conversation.

The way she seemed to understand my grief.

The way she listened when I talked about Rachel.

At the time, I thought I had found someone who cared.

Someone who understood.

Now I wondered if she had been studying me.

Learning my weaknesses.

Learning my pain.

Learning exactly what I wanted to hear.

“Dad?””

Ava’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

She was staring at the letter.

“Is Mommy angry?””

The question surprised me.

“What?””

“She sounds angry.””

I looked back at Rachel’s handwriting.

The words were serious.

Afraid.

But not angry.

“No, sweetheart.””

I swallowed.

“Your mom was trying to protect us.””

Ava touched the edge of the paper.

“She knew?””

I nodded slowly.

“She knew something was wrong.””

“Did she know Vanessa was bad?””

I hesitated.

Because children deserve honesty.

But they also deserve protection from adult burdens.

“I think your mom knew Vanessa wasn’t safe for us.””

Ava looked down.

“She tried to tell you.””

The guilt hit immediately.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you listen?””

The question wasn’t cruel.

That made it hurt more.

I sat beside her.

“Because I didn’t know what I didn’t know.””

She looked confused.

I sighed.

“I trusted someone who didn’t deserve my trust.””

Ava was quiet.

Then she said:

“But you believe me now.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Forever?””

My throat tightened.

“Forever.””

I continued reading.

Rachel’s letter was several pages long.

Her handwriting changed as she went.

The beginning was calm.

The later pages were rushed.

Like she had been writing quickly.

Like she was afraid she would run out of time.

*Marcus,*

*I need you to understand something. Vanessa did not become interested in our family because she loved us. She became interested because of Ava.*

I stopped.

My eyes moved to my daughter.

She was sitting beside me, holding her mother’s picture.

*She believes Ava belongs with her. She has said things that make me afraid.*

My heart tightened.

*She thinks being a mother is something someone can take. Something someone can earn by removing the person who already has that role.*

I closed my eyes.

That was exactly what Ava had told me.

“She wanted Mommy to give her me.””

Rachel had known.

She had seen it coming.

*I tried to distance myself from her, but she became angry. She told me people would believe her over me because she looked calm and reasonable.*

I stopped reading.

Because those words described Vanessa perfectly.

Calm.

Reasonable.

Always making me question myself.

*Marcus, if something happens to me, do not let Vanessa become Ava’s only protector. Do not let her rewrite what happened.*

My hands tightened.

Something happens to me.

Rachel had written those words before she died.

Not because she was afraid of an accident.

Because she was afraid of someone.

I turned the page.

The final paragraph was shorter.

And it was the one that made my entire body go cold.

*There is one more thing you need to know. Vanessa knows about the night Ava was born. She knows something about our family that I never told you.*

I stopped.

What?

The night Ava was born?

I read the sentence again.

*Ask her why she was there.*

The letter ended.

No goodbye.

No final message.

Just that.

A question.

One that had been waiting for me for years.

Why was Vanessa there?

I called Daniel immediately.

He answered quickly.

“Marcus?””

“I found the letter.””

A pause.

“Rachel’s letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“Vanessa’s room.””

Silence.

Then:

“She kept it.””

“Yes.””

I heard him exhale.

“What did it say?””

I looked at Ava.

Then away.

“Enough.””

“Marcus.””

“Daniel, I need you to investigate something.””

“What?””

“Vanessa’s connection to Rachel.””

“I’ve been trying.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“Not their friendship.””

I looked at the letter.

“Her connection to Ava’s birth.””

Another silence.

Longer this time.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Why would Vanessa know anything about that?””

“Because Rachel wrote that she did.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

Then he said:

“I’ll look into it.””

“Today.””

“I’ll do my best.””

“No.””

I stared at the letter.

“I don’t need your best.””

I lowered my voice.

“I need the truth.””

Two hours later, Daniel called.

I knew something was wrong before I answered.

“Tell me.””

His first words were:

“Marcus, I found something.””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

“Vanessa and Rachel weren’t just friends.””

“I know.””

“No.””

His voice was serious.

“They were connected before Rachel met you.””

I frowned.

“How?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Vanessa worked at the hospital where Ava was born.””

The world seemed to stop.

“What?””

“She was a nurse.””

I sat down.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t Rachel tell me?””

“I don’t know.””

I looked at Ava.

The little girl who had spent years believing she caused her mother’s death.

The little girl Vanessa had tried to control.

“Keep going.””

Daniel continued.

“Vanessa was involved in the paperwork surrounding Ava’s birth.””

My stomach dropped.

“What paperwork?””

“I’m still finding out.””

“Daniel.””

“There’s more.””

I waited.

“When Ava was born, there was another patient with a similar case.””

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know yet.””

The uncertainty bothered me.

“Find out.””

“I will.””

“No.””

I looked at the letter.

“Find out why Vanessa cared about my daughter before she even knew me.””

That evening, Vanessa called.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Marcus.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost normal.

“You’ve been searching.””

I didn’t respond.

“I know about the letter.””

My grip tightened.

“How?””

“Because you were never good at hiding things from me.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You stole it.””

“No.””

“You took Rachel’s letter.””

“I protected you from something you weren’t ready to understand.””

I laughed.

A humorless sound.

“You mean you hid the truth.””

“You think you know what happened.””

“I know enough.””

“No.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You know what Rachel wanted you to believe.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

“She was afraid.””

“Yes.””

“She was unstable.””

My blood boiled.

“Don’t.””

“It’s the truth.””

“You don’t get to rewrite her.””

“I’m trying to protect Ava.””

“No.””

I looked toward my daughter’s room.

“You’re trying to control her.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“You really believe that?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then:

“Ask yourself why Rachel never told you about me.””

I froze.

“She didn’t trust you.””

My jaw tightened.

“She trusted me.””

“Did she?””

Vanessa’s voice softened.

“That’s the part you can’t accept.””

“What?””

“She knew you had a weakness.””

I said nothing.

“Your guilt.””

The word hit.

“You blamed yourself for her death.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“And Vanessa?””

“She knew.””

“She used it.””

“No.””

Her voice became cold.

“She understood you.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The same manipulation.

The same twisting.

“You’re done.””

“Marcus.””

“No.””

I ended the call.

The next morning, Daniel arrived with a folder.

He didn’t sit.

That told me everything.

“What happened?””

He placed the folder down.

“I found Ava’s original birth records.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

His expression was serious.

“There is something unusual.””

“What?””

He opened the folder.

“Vanessa signed as a witness.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s documented.””

“Why would a nurse witness my daughter’s birth?””

Daniel looked at the papers.

“That’s what we need to understand.””

I flipped through the documents.

Then I saw it.

A name.

Not Vanessa.

Another name.

A woman I didn’t recognize.

“Who is this?””

Daniel looked.

His face changed.

“I don’t know.””

“Daniel.””

He picked up the paper.

Then whispered:

“Marcus…”

“What?””

“This woman listed herself as Ava’s biological mother on an earlier version of the record.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Rachel was her mother.””

“Yes.””

“Then why is another woman’s name here?””

Daniel looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him…

He looked afraid.

“Because someone tried to change Ava’s identity before you ever knew.””

I stared at the document.

The truth I had been chasing suddenly became bigger than Vanessa.

Bigger than Rachel’s death.

Bigger than anything I imagined.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

One sentence.

*Now you understand why I had to protect what was mine.*

I looked at the words.

Then at Ava’s picture.

And I realized something terrifying.

Vanessa wasn’t trying to take my daughter away.

May you like

She believed…

She already owned her.
