Chapter 7: The Friend Behind the Curtain
The envelope felt like it weighed a hundred pounds.
I stared at the name written across the front.
*Sarah Bennett.*
My best friend.
The person who had stood beside me tonight.
The person who wiped frosting from my face.
The person who looked at Daniel with anger when he failed to defend me.
The person who told me I deserved better.
My mind refused to accept it.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I even realized I had spoken.
Rachel looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You’re wrong.””
Rachel’s expression tightened.
“Emma…”
“You’re wrong.””
Sarah stepped forward.
Her face had changed.
Not guilty.
Not angry.
Confused.
“What is this?””
I turned toward her.
I wanted to ask.
I wanted her to laugh.
I wanted her to say this was some terrible misunderstanding.
Because Sarah was the one person I never questioned.
She knew everything.
My childhood.
My fears.
My dreams.
She was there when Daniel and I first met.
She helped me choose my wedding dress.
She was the first person I called when I found out I was pregnant.
She knew me.
Or I thought she did.
Sarah looked at the envelope in my hand.
“Emma, why are you looking at me like that?””
I couldn’t answer.
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Open it.””
Sarah’s expression changed.
“Rachel, don’t.””
That one sentence did it.
A tiny crack.
A tiny moment where fear crossed Sarah’s face.
And I saw it.
I saw the fear.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
My fingers trembled as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a stack of printed emails.
The first page was dated six months ago.
The sender:
Sarah Bennett.
The recipient:
A private legal consultant.
My eyes moved down the page.
*Subject: Estate Situation*
I stopped breathing.
The first line made my stomach twist.
*Daniel is weak. Linda is impatient. We need to make sure Emma does not discover the full value of the property until the transfer process begins.*
I looked up.
Sarah was staring at me.
“Emma…”
I kept reading.
*She trusts me completely. If anyone can convince her to sign, it will be me.*
The room blurred.
Not from tears.
From disbelief.
I looked at Sarah.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Sarah.””
My voice broke.
“Tell me.””
She looked away.
And that was the moment my heart understood before my mind did.
She couldn’t.
Because it was true.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is going on?””
I laughed softly.
A broken sound.
“Apparently, everyone knew except me.””
Sarah shook her head.
“Emma, please listen.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I held up the papers.
“Six months.””
Her eyes filled.
“I can explain.””
“Everyone says that.””
I looked around the room.
Daniel.
Rachel.
Sarah.
Everyone had explanations.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had a version where they weren’t the villain.
But somehow, I was always the person who got hurt.
“Why?””
Sarah looked down.
“I was trying to help.””
I stared at her.
“Help who?””
She didn’t answer.
“Sarah.””
She swallowed.
“Help you.””
I almost laughed.
“By stealing my choice?””
“No.””
“By lying to me?””
“No.””
“By making plans behind my back?””
Her silence grew.
I stepped back.
“You sound exactly like them.””
Sarah’s face fell.
“That’s not fair.””
“No?””
I looked at the document.
“You made decisions about my life without me.””
She whispered:
“I was trying to protect you from making a mistake.””
The sentence was so familiar.
Everyone had used it.
Protect.
Help.
Guide.
As if controlling me was an act of love.
“What mistake?””
Sarah wiped her eyes.
“Marrying Daniel.””
The room went still.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at me.
“I saw things you didn’t see.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Sarah ignored him.
“Emma, I watched you give everything to him.””
My chest tightened.
“I watched you pay his bills. I watched you defend him. I watched you make excuses for him.””
Her voice shook.
“And I hated seeing you disappear.””
For a moment, I understood.
Not forgave.
Understood.
Maybe there had been concern.
Maybe there had been fear.
But concern did not justify betrayal.
“So you decided to take control?””
Sarah looked down.
“I thought if the estate was protected, you would eventually see the truth.””
I stared at her.
“The truth?””
She nodded.
“I knew Daniel would eventually show his real intentions.””
I looked at Daniel.
His face was pale.
“And your plan was what?””
Sarah hesitated.
“To expose him.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I held up the papers.
“This isn’t exposing someone.””
I looked at her.
“This is destroying someone.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know it would go this far.””
“You didn’t know?””
I stepped closer.
“Linda smashed a cake into my face.””
Sarah closed her eyes.
“Emma…”
“Daniel signed documents against me.””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t know he would sign.””
“And Rachel knew.””
Rachel lowered her head.
The pain on her face was real.
But I couldn’t let that distract me.
Everyone had hurt me while claiming they were helping.
I was tired of being protected.
I wanted to be respected.
The attorney, who had remained silent through the confrontation, finally spoke.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there is another issue.””
I turned.
“What now?””
He looked at the documents.
“Some of these communications were sent from a private account.””
Sarah went still.
I noticed.
“What private account?””
The attorney looked at her.
“An account linked to the Whitmore Family Holdings network.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s my family’s company.””
The attorney nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Sarah.
“You were working with them?””
“No.””
Her answer came too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
She corrected herself.
“I mean… not exactly.””
Not exactly.
The phrase of someone hiding something.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who paid you?””
Sarah looked horrified.
“No one.””
“Then why use their network?””
She didn’t answer.
I watched her face.
The friend who had always been confident.
Always had the right words.
Always knew what to say.
Now she looked scared.
Not because I was angry.
Because the truth was getting closer.
I walked toward her.
“Sarah.””
She looked at me.
“One question.””
She nodded slowly.
“Did you ever actually want to help me?””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I waited.
“Then why did you become another person who lied to me?””
She looked away.
And quietly said:
“Because I wasn’t the first person who planned this.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Sarah wiped her tears.
“I found out after I started investigating.””
“Investigating what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then Rachel.
Then me.
“The person behind everything.””
A cold feeling moved through the room.
“You mean Linda?””
Sarah shook her head.
“No.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
“Rachel?””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Then who?””
Sarah reached into her bag.
She pulled out her phone.
Her hands were shaking.
“I found this two weeks ago.””
She opened a file.
A recording.
A conversation.
A voice filled the room.
A voice I recognized instantly.
A voice that made every person freeze.
Because it belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone who had comforted me.
Someone who had hugged me when I cried.
Someone who had told me they loved me.
The recording began.
And the first words were:
“Once Emma signs over control, the estate will finally belong to our family.””
I felt my blood turn cold.
Because the person speaking was not Daniel.
Not Linda.
May you like
Not Sarah.
It was my own mother.
