Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath The Floor

The note was small.

Too small to carry the weight it held.

Noah brought it downstairs holding the paper carefully.

“Mom?””

I looked up from breakfast.

“What is it?””

He hesitated.

“I found this.””

The second I saw the handwriting, I knew.

My mother.

Again.

Always my mother.

Marcus took the note.

His face changed as he read.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

The words were simple.

Claire can never know the truth about the lake.

My hands went cold.

Because after everything we discovered, there was still one secret left.

The lake.

The place where my life changed.

The place where everyone told me my son disappeared.

“What truth?”” I whispered.

Nobody knew.

Not even Elijah.

Detective Hayes arrived within the hour.

She examined the note.

“This was hidden recently.””

Marcus frowned.

“Recently?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Noah.

“When did you find it?””

“This morning.””

She looked around the room.

“Someone placed it here.””

My stomach tightened.

“Someone?””

She nodded.

“Your mother died three weeks ago.””

Silence.

“Who else had access to her belongings?””

I looked at Marcus.

Then Elijah.

Then the answer came.

Richard.

Detective Hayes called him immediately.

He arrived an hour later.

But this time, he looked afraid.

Not guilty.

Afraid.

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

Marcus stared.

“Another secret?””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt exhausted.

“How many more?””

Richard looked at Elijah.

“One.””

The room became quiet.

“Evelyn didn’t plan the lake incident alone.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Richard took a deep breath.

“She had help.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Someone close to you.””

Nobody moved.

Then he said the name.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“My father died when I was twenty.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Richard opened a file.

“Your father helped Evelyn create the first story.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Why?””

Richard hesitated.

“Because he believed Marcus was ruining Claire’s life.””

I laughed in disbelief.

“My father barely knew Marcus.””

“He knew enough.””

I sat down.

Suddenly, my entire childhood felt unstable.

My family.

My memories.

Everything.

“My father helped her?””

Richard nodded.

“He helped create the idea that Elijah was unsafe.””

Elijah looked hurt.

“All these people decided my life for me.””

Nobody answered.

Because he was right.

Then Detective Hayes interrupted.

“Wait.””

She looked at Richard.

“You said create the idea.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“What actually happened at the lake?””

Richard looked down.

“The truth is…”

He stopped.

Then looked at Elijah.

“Your grandmother didn’t save you.””

My heart raced.

“She was trying to take you away.””

“What happened?””

Richard swallowed.

“Elijah found out.””

The room went silent.

“What do you mean?””

Richard looked at him.

“You heard them arguing.””

Elijah frowned.

“I don’t remember.””

“You were six.””

Richard continued.

“Your grandmother and your grandfather were arguing about taking you away permanently.””

Elijah’s face changed.

A memory.

A small one.

“I remember…”

Everyone turned.

He stared at the floor.

“I remember Grandma crying.””

My chest tightened.

“What else?””

He closed his eyes.

“I remember Grandpa saying, ‘This has gone too far.’”

Richard nodded.

“That was the night everything changed.””

Elijah whispered:

“She wasn’t planning to bring me home.””

“No.””

Richard looked devastated.

“She planned to disappear with you.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Then Elijah said something nobody expected.

“I remember the boat.””

My heart stopped.

“The boat?””

He nodded slowly.

“I remember falling asleep.””

His breathing changed.

“I remember Grandma carrying me.””

Everyone listened.

“Then I woke up.””

A tear fell.

“She was crying.””

“What happened next?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“I heard you.””

My heart broke.

“You heard me?””

He nodded.

“You were calling my name.””

The room disappeared.

Seven years.

Seven years of believing he never knew I searched.

But he did.

“I tried to answer.””

His voice cracked.

“But Grandma covered my mouth.””

I covered mine.

“She told me…”

He stopped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She said if I loved you, I had to stay quiet.””

Nobody spoke.

Because that was the final cruelty.

My mother had used my love to trap my child.

That evening, Elijah sat by the lake alone.

I found him there.

“You okay?””

He shrugged.

“No.””

I sat beside him.

“Me neither.””

For a while, we watched the water.

Then he asked:

“Do you hate her?””

I thought about it.

“I don’t know.””

He nodded.

“I don’t either.””

A few minutes passed.

Then he said:

“But I don’t want her to be the reason I lose you again.””

I held his hand.

“You won’t.””

And for the first time, I believed it.

But when we returned home, Detective Hayes was waiting.

She held a final piece of evidence.

A video file.

Recorded the day Elijah disappeared.

She looked at us.

“Your mother left this behind.””

My heart raced.

“What’s on it?””

Detective Hayes pressed play.

And my mother’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, if you’re seeing this…”

May you like

A pause.

“Then Elijah finally told you everything.””
