Amused

Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Chose Money

We reached the bank just before six in the evening.

A security guard stood near the entrance, speaking with a woman in a navy blazer. Behind the glass doors, employees moved between desks beneath bright fluorescent lights.

Richard walked straight toward the manager.

“My name is Richard Brooks. I understand someone tried to access a safe deposit box using my identity.””

The manager, a gray-haired woman named Patricia, nodded.

“Mr. Brooks, we've secured the relevant records. However, because the matter involves suspected fraud, we need to verify several documents before releasing anything.””

Daniel placed his business card on the counter.

“My legal team has already contacted the bank's counsel. We aren't asking you to release private financial information without authorization. We want the evidence preserved.””

Patricia glanced at the card.

“Mr. Reed, I understand. The attempted access was denied because the identification presented did not match our records.””

“Who presented it?”” Richard asked.

Patricia hesitated.

“Your daughter, Madison Brooks.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Of course.””

I stared at the security desk.

“Was my mother with her?””

“No. Ms. Brooks arrived with another woman. The second individual left before our security team completed its review.””

“Who was she?”” Claire asked.

Patricia checked a report.

“We're not certain. She presented herself as a legal assistant.””

Daniel exchanged a glance with Richard.

“Did she leave any documents?””

“Yes. We have copies.””

Patricia led us to a private office.

A thick folder lay on the table. Inside were photocopies of identification cards, authorization forms, and a notarized statement.

Richard leaned over the papers.

“That isn't my signature.””

He pointed to the bottom of the form.

“I write my R differently. And I never use my middle initial on legal documents.””

Daniel examined it.

“Who notarized this?””

Patricia showed him the stamp.

“A mobile notary registered in Fulton County.””

Claire photographed the page.

“We'll need to contact the notary.””

Patricia nodded.

“There is another matter. Madison left a handwritten note requesting that the bank notify her if anyone else attempted to access box 417.””

Richard stared at her.

“She has no authority over that box.””

“According to our records, she doesn't.””

Patricia handed him the note.

I recognized Madison's handwriting immediately.

If Jasmine Reed or Daniel Reed appears, contact the number below before releasing anything.

My stomach tightened.

Madison knew about the inheritance.

She knew about the trust.

And she knew that the documents in the box could change everything.

“Why would she care?”” I asked.

Richard rubbed his face.

“Because someone has been telling her a different story.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your mother may have convinced Madison that your inheritance was money taken from her father's estate.””

“But it wasn't,” Claire said.

“The trust was established before Michael died. It belonged to Jasmine.””

“Madison doesn't know that,” Richard replied.

I thought about the driveway that morning.

Madison standing beside her Mercedes, complaining that my Toyota made her gift look less special.

Vanessa telling Richard that Madison deserved something better.

Their obsession with appearances suddenly felt connected to something much uglier.

They hadn't merely wanted expensive cars.

They wanted the world to believe they were the family with the money, the status, and the right to decide who mattered.

And my existence threatened that story.

My phone rang.

Madison's name flashed across the screen.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

Her voice came through immediately.

“Where are you?””

“Why?””

“Just tell me where you are.””

“I'm at the bank. The one where you tried to steal my inheritance.””

There was a long silence.

Then Madison laughed.

“You really believe that ridiculous story?””

“I watched the security report.””

“Mom said you were trying to take everything away from us.””

“Everything that belongs to me?””

“You don't even know what you're doing, Jasmine. You're letting those people manipulate you.””

“Which people?””

“Your father. Your sister. That lawyer. They're using you to destroy our family.””

I closed my eyes.

“Madison, I didn't even know my father was alive this morning.””

“And now suddenly you're a millionaire.””

“Do you hear yourself?””

“Yes, I hear myself! I've spent my entire life trying to make something of myself, and you get handed twenty million dollars because you happened to be born into the right family.””

“I didn't choose any of this.””

“Neither did I!””

Her voice cracked.

For the first time, I heard something beneath her anger that sounded like genuine pain.

“My father died when I was little. Richard was the only father I had left. Mom always said his brother had stolen everything from our family. She said Michael died trying to protect us from Daniel Reed.””

“Your mother lied about my father dying too.””

Madison went quiet.

I continued.

“She told me Daniel was dead. She told him I was dead. She took money to keep us apart. What makes you think she told you the truth about anything?””

Madison's breathing grew uneven.

“Don't talk about my mother like that.””

“Then tell me why you tried to access the safe deposit box.””

“I was trying to protect Dad.””

“From what?””

“From losing everything!””

I looked at Richard.

He had been listening to every word.

“Madison, Dad never signed the authorization you presented.””

“He told me to do it.””

“When?””

She hesitated.

“Months ago.””

“Six months ago, Richard was in the hospital.””

Silence.

Then Madison whispered, “I didn't know that.””

“Who gave you the document?””

“Mom.””

“Who notarized it?””

“I don't know.””

“Who told you the money in the box belonged to you?””

Madison began crying.

“Mom said if we didn't get those documents first, Daniel would take the company and leave us with nothing.””

Richard reached for the phone.

“Madison, it's Dad.””

Her breathing hitched.

“Dad?””

“Yes. I need you to listen carefully. Nobody is taking anything that belongs to you. But you cannot use my identity or interfere with legal evidence.””

“I was trying to help!””

“I believe you thought you were helping. That doesn't make what you did right.””

She sobbed.

“Are you angry with me?””

Richard's expression softened.

“I'm disappointed that you didn't come to me with your concerns. But you're my daughter. I want you to tell me the truth.””

Another silence.

Then Madison said something that made my blood run cold.

“Mom told me the bracelet was the only thing that could prove what really happened to Michael.””

Richard went rigid.

“What do you mean?””

“I don't know! She said Grandpa hid something in Jasmine's bracelet, and if Daniel found it, he would destroy us.””

I looked down at my bare wrist.

The bracelet was in Daniel's possession, sealed inside an evidence bag his attorney had provided.

“Madison,” I said, “where is Mom?””

“I don't know.””

“Did she tell you to come to the bank?””

“Yes.””

“Did she give you the authorization?””

“Yes.””

“Then where is she now?””

Madison started crying harder.

“She said she had to meet someone.””

“Who?””

“I don't know, Jasmine!””

Her voice dropped.

“But she told me something before she left.””

“What?””

“She said if the box was opened, Richard would be arrested for your grandfather's murder.””

The room went silent.

Richard's face lost all color.

Daniel snatched the phone from me.

“Madison, this is Daniel Reed. Did your mother say why Richard would be arrested?””

“She said there was evidence in the box that would make him look guilty.””

“Did she say what evidence?””

“No.””

“Did she tell you where she was going?””

Madison hesitated.

Then she whispered, “The old Reed house.””

Daniel's expression changed.

“My father's estate?””

“Yes. She said she needed to get something before anyone else found it.””

Daniel ended the call and turned toward Claire.

“The old house was sold twelve years ago.””

“Who bought it?”” Claire asked.

Daniel took out his phone and searched through his contacts.

“Michael's former attorney handled the sale. I need to find out who owns it now.””

Richard stood.

“We should go there.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“We should call the police.””

Richard slammed his palm against the table.

“My wife may be walking into a dangerous situation, and my daughter is involved in a fraud investigation. I am not sitting here waiting for a phone call!””

Patricia stepped into the doorway.

“Mr. Brooks, I understand your concern, but I strongly recommend that you let law enforcement handle this.””

Daniel nodded.

“She's right.””

He called his attorney and explained what Madison had told us. Within minutes, the attorney contacted the authorities and arranged for officers to accompany us to the property.

The old Reed house stood on a quiet road outside the city, surrounded by tall oak trees and a rusted iron fence.

The mansion had once belonged to my grandfather. According to Daniel, he had lived there for nearly forty years before his death.

The property had been vacant for several months while its current owners renovated the interior.

When we arrived, two police vehicles were already parked near the gate.

An officer approached Daniel.

“Mr. Reed?””

“Yes.””

“We found a vehicle registered to Vanessa Carter in the driveway. The front door was unlocked.””

Richard moved forward.

“Is she inside?””

“We're checking the property now.””

We followed the officers through the entrance hall.

The house smelled of damp wood and fresh paint. Plastic sheets covered several pieces of furniture. Dust floated through the light filtering in from tall windows.

Daniel stopped near the staircase.

“This is where my father used to sit and read.””

Claire touched the banister.

“I remember running down these stairs.””

I looked at the walls.

Somewhere in this house, my grandfather had once held me. Somewhere in these rooms, my father had laughed with his children.

And somewhere in the same house, a secret had been buried.

An officer called from the study.

“Mr. Reed, you need to see this.””

We entered the room.

A desk stood near the window, its drawers pulled open. Papers littered the floor. A small safe had been forced from the wall.

Vanessa's handbag lay beside it.

Richard rushed forward.

“Vanessa!””

An officer held out an arm.

“Please stay back.””

I looked at the safe.

It was empty.

Daniel crouched near the desk.

“Someone took something.””

Claire picked up a torn envelope.

“This has Dad's name on it.””

Inside was a photograph of Michael Brooks standing beside a hospital bed.

My grandfather lay beneath white sheets.

Beside the bed stood Richard, Vanessa, and a man none of us recognized.

The photograph had been taken on the night my grandfather died.

I stared at the unfamiliar man.

“Who is he?””

Daniel took the picture.

His face changed.

“That's Dr. Samuel Price. He was my father's private physician.””

Richard looked horrified.

“He wasn't the doctor who signed the death certificate.””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“He wasn't.””

An officer approached with a second piece of paper.

“We found this in the fireplace. It appears someone tried to burn it.””

The page contained a handwritten message.

The witness has been paid. The records are secure. If anything happens to me, make sure the child never remembers.

Below the message was a signature.

*Vanessa Carter.*

Richard stumbled backward.

“She knew.””

Daniel stared at the signature.

“Perhaps she knew more than we thought.””

I felt a cold wave pass through me.

My mother had hidden letters, forged documents, and arranged payments.

But this note suggested something even darker.

She might have known what happened to my grandfather.

And if she had paid a witness to remain silent, then the secret inside the safe deposit box could expose more than financial fraud.

An officer approached us.

“We've found the owner of the vehicle. It's registered to your wife, Mr. Brooks.””

Richard looked toward the doorway.

“Where is she?””

The officer hesitated.

“We found blood in the upstairs hallway.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“We're searching the rest of the house. We haven't located Mrs. Carter yet.””

Daniel gripped my shoulder.

“Stay close to me.””

Then a voice echoed from the second floor.

“Don't come any closer!””

We all looked up.

Madison stood at the top of the staircase, holding a small silver object in one hand.

Her hair was disheveled, and tears streaked her face.

Richard took a step forward.

“Madison, sweetheart, put that down.””

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

“Jasmine, I'm sorry.””

I stared at her.

“Where is Mom?””

Madison's lips trembled.

Then she lifted the silver object.

May you like

It was my bracelet's missing key charm.

And she whispered, “Mom said if I gave this to you, everyone would find out who really killed Grandpa.””
