Chapter 5: The Person Wearing Elena’s Necklace
I didn’t sleep that night.
The birthday cake stayed untouched on the kitchen counter.
The decorations remained hanging from the walls.
The balloons slowly lost air, floating lower and lower like they were tired of pretending this was a celebration.
By midnight, my house no longer felt like my home.
It felt like a place where secrets had been hiding in plain sight.
I kept looking at the photo Claire sent.
The necklace.
Elena’s necklace.
The moon pendant I had spent years believing was waiting for Maya.
Around another person’s neck.
I zoomed in.
My fingers stopped moving.
Because I knew her.
The woman wearing it was Tara’s younger sister, Brooke.
I called Claire immediately.
She answered on the first ring.
“Marcus?””
“Why does Brooke have Elena’s necklace?””
There was silence.
Then:
“You know?””
“Know what?””
Claire sighed.
“I’m sorry.””
I stood up.
“Claire, what happened?””
“She told Brooke it was something Elena left behind.””
My stomach turned.
“She gave it to her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked across the room.
Tara was sitting alone on the couch.
She looked exhausted.
For the first time all night, she looked small.
But then I remembered Maya upstairs.
Alone.
Crying.
And suddenly sympathy became harder.
I walked toward Tara.
“We need to finish this.””
She looked up.
“Marcus…”
“Did you give Elena’s necklace to Brooke?””
Her face went pale.
“How did you find out?””
That was all I needed.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Confirmation.
“Why?””
Tara looked down.
“I don’t know.””
“Yes, you do.””
She rubbed her hands together.
“She loved it.””
“Who?””
“Brooke.””
I stared at her.
“That necklace wasn’t yours to give away.””
“I know.””
“No, I don’t think you do.””
She looked at me.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.””
I pointed toward the stairs.
“A mistake is burning dinner.””
My voice cracked.
“You took something my daughter was supposed to have from her mother.””
Tara closed her eyes.
“I thought she would forget.””
The words hit harder than anything.
“You thought she would forget her mother?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I thought if there were fewer reminders, she would stop living in the past.””
I shook my head.
“She was twelve.””
“I was trying.””
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
But firmly.
“You were trying to erase something you couldn’t compete with.””
Tara started crying.
“I loved you.””
“I know.””
“I loved Maya.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Did you?””
She looked hurt.
“Yes.””
“Then why did she spend months feeling like a guest?””
Tara had no answer.
A floorboard creaked.
We both looked up.
Maya stood at the top of the stairs.
She had heard enough.
“Dad?””
I walked toward her.
“Maya, go back to bed.””
“No.””
Her voice surprised me.
She came downstairs slowly.
“I want to ask her something.””
Tara looked at her.
“Maya…”
“Why didn’t you like me?””
The question broke the room.
Tara immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why did you hide my mom’s pictures?””
Silence.
“Why did you tell me people were tired of hearing about her?””
“Maya…”
“Why did you give away her necklace?””
Tara looked at me.
“How did she know?””
I didn’t answer.
Because Maya wasn’t asking for my permission anymore.
She was asking for the truth.
Tara stood.
“I was afraid.””
Maya frowned.
“Of what?””
Tara’s voice cracked.
“That I would never be enough.””
Maya stared at her.
“I never asked you to be my mom.””
Those seven words destroyed whatever defense Tara had left.
“I know,” Tara whispered.
“No, you didn’t.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“You kept trying to replace her. But I wasn’t looking for a replacement.””
I looked at my daughter.
Sixteen years old.
Standing in front of an adult who had made her feel unwanted.
And still, she was the most compassionate person in the room.
My phone buzzed again.
I almost ignored it.
But something made me look.
It was another message from Claire.
This time, there was no photo.
Just a sentence.
*Marcus, there’s one more thing you need to know about Tara and Elena’s last week alive.*
I opened it.
May you like
And the next message appeared.
*Tara wasn’t just hiding Elena’s belongings from Maya. She was hiding something Elena asked her to give you.*
