Chapter 6: The Name on the Document
The name on the document stayed on my phone screen like a wound that refused to close.
I stared at it.
Then I stared again.
Because my mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.
It wasn’t Caleb.
It wasn’t some unknown executive.
It wasn’t a greedy investor hiding behind paperwork.
It was Daniel Brooks.
My general manager.
My friend.
The man who had stood beside me through twelve years of expansion.
The man who had held Sarah’s hand during her final days and promised her he would protect everything we built.
“Mr. Vance?””
Daniel’s voice pulled me back.
I quickly locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
He studied me.
He knew me too well.
“Something happened.””
I looked at him.
For years, Daniel had been the person I trusted most after Sarah.
That was what made it hurt.
“I received a message.””
“From who?””
“Someone who worked with Sarah.””
His expression changed.
“What did they say?””
I looked toward the old office window.
The ocean was dark.
Waves crashed against the rocks below.
“I need some time.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
But I saw the hesitation.
The fear.
He knew something was wrong.
Maybe he knew more than he admitted.
“Daniel.””
“Yes?””
“How long have you worked for me?””
“Eleven years.””
“And Sarah trusted you.””
His face softened.
“She did.””
“Why?””
The question surprised him.
“Because you were loyal.””
He looked down.
“I tried to be.””
Tried.
That word bothered me.
Not “I was.””
Not “I am.””
Tried.
I picked up my coat.
“I’m leaving tonight.””
Daniel looked alarmed.
“Leaving?””
“Yes.””
“Where will you go?””
“Somewhere nobody knows I’m coming.””
He understood immediately.
The same thing I had done when I arrived at the resort.
Disappear.
Watch.
Listen.
Find the truth.
But before I left, I did something Daniel didn’t expect.
I smiled.
Not because I was happy.
Because I finally understood.
The person who betrayed me had made one mistake.
They thought they knew what I would do.
They thought Ethan Vance was just a grieving husband who had become weak.
They forgot who built the empire.
They forgot who survived losing everything.
The next morning, I walked into the Grand Regent wearing the same faded coat.
The same clothes.
The same disguise.
But this time, I wasn’t testing employees.
I was hunting for answers.
The lobby was busy.
Guests checked in.
Families carried luggage.
Business travelers rushed toward meetings.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
I walked toward the front desk.
A young receptionist greeted me.
“Good morning, sir. Welcome to the Grand Regent.””
I smiled.
“Thank you.””
She looked at my coat.
But unlike Vanessa, she didn’t judge.
“Do you need assistance?””
“No.””
I leaned closer.
“I’m looking for Daniel Brooks.””
Her expression changed.
“He’s in a meeting.””
“Do you know when he’ll be finished?””
“About thirty minutes.””
I nodded.
Then I noticed something.
A security camera above the desk.
Another near the elevators.
The entire hotel was monitored.
Except one area.
The old executive hallway.
The place Sarah used when she handled sensitive business.
Interesting.
I walked away.
Then my phone vibrated.
The anonymous number.
Another message.
*You are looking in the wrong place.*
I stopped.
Another message appeared.
*Daniel is not the only one who betrayed Sarah.*
My stomach tightened.
Then:
*Check the room where she kept her secrets.*
I knew exactly where that was.
Sarah’s old office.
Ten minutes later, I stood inside the room.
The door was locked.
It had been for years.
Daniel had given me access after Sarah died.
I entered slowly.
The room smelled like dust and memories.
I ran my fingers across her desk.
The same desk where she used to drink coffee every morning.
The same desk where she planned our future.
I opened every drawer.
Nothing.
I checked the bookshelf.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A small scratch near the bottom shelf.
Sarah was organized.
She never moved furniture without a reason.
I pulled the shelf forward.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was another envelope.
My hands shook as I opened it.
This one wasn’t addressed to me.
It had a name.
Daniel Brooks.
My heart sank.
I opened the letter.
Daniel,
If Ethan ever finds this, it means I was right.
I stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
I know you are scared. I know you think protecting him means hiding the truth.
But hiding betrayal does not protect someone.
It destroys them slowly.
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had known.
Sarah knew he knew.
The next lines made everything worse.
The person manipulating the company is someone Ethan loves.
Someone who has access to family information.
Someone who understands his weaknesses.
I froze.
Someone I love.
Not someone who works for me.
Someone close.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Then answered.
“Hello.””
“Mr. Vance.””
His voice sounded different.
Tired.
Broken.
“Where are you?””
“Your office.””
Silence.
Then:
“You found it.””
I looked around.
“You knew about the letter.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
A pause.
“Three years.””
My grip tightened.
“Three years?””
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice became colder.
“You listen to me.””
I looked at Sarah’s handwriting.
“You let me believe everything was fine.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
He admitted it.
That hurt more.
“Why?””
His voice cracked.
“Because Sarah asked me to.””
I went silent.
“She knew she didn’t have much time,” Daniel continued.
“She was afraid if you knew, you would destroy yourself trying to fix everything.””
“And instead?””
“Instead, I watched the company slowly get taken apart.””
The honesty was painful.
“Who is it, Daniel?””
He didn’t answer.
“Who is the person?””
Another pause.
Then he whispered:
“I think you already know.””
Before I could respond, the office door opened.
I turned.
A person stood there.
Someone I had not seen in years.
Someone who should not have been inside.
May you like
My heart stopped.
Because Sarah’s biggest secret had just walked into the room.
