Chapter 9: The Daughter Who Came Home
The next morning, I woke up feeling like my entire life had been rewritten overnight.
The woman sleeping beside me wasn’t the same man I had married.
Not because Marcus had changed.
Because I finally knew the parts of him that had always been hidden.
The secrets.
The grief.
The mistakes.
The pain.
And the person who had built an entire life on top of those secrets.
Tara.
Marcus barely slept.
He sat at the kitchen table staring at the old photographs Emily gave us.
When I walked in, he looked up.
“I don’t know what to do.””
I poured coffee.
“For once, tell the truth.””
He nodded.
“I should have done that years ago.””
“Yes.””
He looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
That was something.
A knock came at the door.
Marcus froze.
I looked at him.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The knock came again.
Then a voice.
A young woman’s voice.
“Dad?””
Marcus stopped breathing.
I felt tears fill my eyes.
He stood slowly.
Like moving too fast might make the moment disappear.
He opened the door.
And there she was.
Lily.
Not the little girl in the photographs.
Not the child who wrote the note.
A young woman.
Twenty years old.
But her eyes…
Her eyes were Marcus’s.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Lily whispered:
“Hi.””
Marcus covered his mouth.
“I…”
He couldn’t speak.
Lily looked down.
“I didn’t know if I should come.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He stepped forward.
“Please.””
She looked at him.
“I thought you hated me.””
His face broke.
“What?””
“That’s what Aunt Tara said.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“She lied.””
Lily nodded.
“I know.””
“You knew?””
She looked past him.
At me.
“I know now.””
I stepped forward.
“Maya.””
She nodded.
“I know who you are.””
I looked surprised.
She smiled sadly.
“You’re the woman who made my dad happy.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew about me?””
Lily nodded.
“Emily told me.””
He swallowed.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked away.
“I waited for you.””
Those words hurt.
“I waited at the hospital.””
Marcus started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“I know.””
“I looked for you.””
“I know.””
“I thought you were gone.””
Lily looked at him.
“I thought you left me.””
The two stood there.
Two people separated by a lie.
A lie told by someone who claimed love.
Finally, Marcus said:
“I’m sorry.””
Lily cried.
And then she hugged him.
A simple hug.
But it carried twenty years of pain.
I looked away.
Giving them privacy.
Later that day, we learned the rest.
Tara had found Lily after Emily moved away.
She had kept contact secretly.
She had helped financially.
She had convinced herself that because she cared for Lily, she wasn’t a villain.
But caring after destroying someone’s life didn’t erase the damage.
When Tara arrived that evening, Marcus almost didn’t let her inside.
But Lily did.
“I want to hear her say it.””
Tara stood in the doorway.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Not powerful.
Not cold.
Just broken.
Lily stared at her.
“Why?””
Tara cried.
“I was afraid.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“You took my father from me.””
“I know.””
“You made me believe nobody wanted me.””
Tara covered her face.
“I know.””
Lily’s voice shook.
“Do you know what that does to a child?””
Tara had no answer.
For once.
No excuse.
No explanation.
Just silence.
Then Lily said something I never expected.
“I forgive you.””
Everyone looked at her.
Tara cried harder.
“But forgiveness doesn’t mean nothing happened.””
Lily continued.
“You still have to live with what you did.””
And somehow, that was more powerful than revenge.
Because Lily wasn’t giving Tara permission to forget.
She was taking back control.
Later that night, Marcus found me sitting outside.
“You’re quiet.””
I looked at him.
“I’m thinking.””
“About leaving?””
The question hurt.
I looked away.
“I don’t know.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
For the first time, I believed him.
“I love you,” he said.
I looked at him.
“But I don’t know if love is enough.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped.
I opened it.
May you like
One sentence.
*Maya, you still don’t know the whole truth about Marcus.*
